    Non-centralized Control for Flow-based Distribution Networks: A Game-theoretical Insight

    This paper solves a data-driven control problem for a flow-based distribution network with two objectives: a resource allocation and a fair distribution of costs. These objectives represent both cooperation and competition directions. It is proposed a solution that combines either a centralized or distributed cooperative game approach using the Shapley value to determine a proper partitioning of the system and a fair communication cost distribution. On the other hand, a decentralized noncooperative game approach computing the Nash equilibrium is used to achieve the control objective of the resource allocation under a non-complete information topology. Furthermore, an invariant-set property is presented and the closed-loop system stability is analyzed for the non cooperative game approach. Another contribution regarding the cooperative game approach is an alternative way to compute the Shapley value for the proposed specific characteristic function.     Modeling the Internet's Large-Scale Topology

    Network generators that capture the Internet's large-scale topology are crucial for the development of efficient routing protocols and modeling Internet traffic. Our ability to design realistic generators is limited by the incomplete understanding of the fundamental driving forces that affect the Internet's evolution. By combining the most extensive data on the time evolution, topology and physical layout of the Internet, we identify the universal mechanisms that shape the Internet's router and autonomous system level topology. We find that the physical layout of nodes form a fractal set, determined by population density patterns around the globe. The placement of links is driven by competition between preferential attachment and linear distance dependence, a marked departure from the currently employed exponential laws. The universal parameters that we extract significantly restrict the class of potentially correct Internet models, and indicate that the networks created by all available topology generators are significantly different from the Internet

    Adaptive fog service placement for real-time topology changes in Kubernetes clusters

    Recent trends have caused a shift from services deployed solely in monolithic data centers in the cloud to services deployed in the fog (e.g. roadside units for smart highways, support services for IoT devices). Simultaneously, the variety and number of IoT devices has grown rapidly, along with their reliance on cloud services. Additionally, many of these devices are now themselves capable of running containers, allowing them to execute some services previously deployed in the fog. The combination of IoT devices and fog computing has many advantages in terms of efficiency and user experience, but the scale, volatile topology and heterogeneous network conditions of the fog and the edge also present problems for service deployment scheduling. Cloud service scheduling often takes a wide array of parameters into account to calculate optimal solutions. However, the algorithms used are not generally capable of handling the scale and volatility of the fog. This paper presents a scheduling algorithm, named "Swirly", for large scale fog and edge networks, which is capable of adapting to changes in network conditions and connected devices. The algorithm details are presented and implemented as a service using the Kubernetes API. This implementation is validated and benchmarked, showing that a single threaded Swirly service is easily capable of managing service meshes for at least 300.000 devices in soft real-time

    Collaborative cognitive content dissemination and query in heterogeneous mobile opportunistic networks

    This paper investigates complex challenges of opportunistic discovery of content stored in remote mobile devices and delivery to the requesting nodes in heterogeneous mobile disconnection prone environments. We propose new latency aware collaborative cognitive caching approach suitable for content dissemination and query in heterogeneous opportunistic mobile networks and dynamic workloads. Utilising fully localised and ego networks multi-layer predictive heuristics about dynamically changing topology, dynamic resources and varying popularity content, our cognitive caching achieves high success ratio, low delays and high caching efficiency for very different real world dynamically changing mobile topologies

    MatSWMM - An open-source toolbox for designing real-time control of urban drainage systems

    This manuscript describes the MatSWMM toolbox, an open-source Matlab, Python, and LabVIEW-based software package for the analysis and design of real-time control (RTC) strategies in urban drainage systems (UDS). MatSWMM includes control-oriented models of UDS, and the storm water management model (SWMM) of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as systematic-system edition functionalities. Furthermore, MatSWMM is also provided with a population-dynamics-based controller for UDS with three of the fundamental dynamics, i.e., the Smith, projection, and replicator dynamics. The simulation algorithm, and a detailed description of the features of MatSWMM are presented in this manuscript in order to illustrate the capabilities that the tool has for educational and research purposes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
