    Modeling and Control of Piezoelectric Actuators

    Piezoelectric actuators (PEAs) utilize the inverse piezoelectric effect to generate fine displacement with a resolution down to sub-nanometers and as such, they have been widely used in various micro- and nanopositioning applications. However, the modeling and control of PEAs have proven to be challenging tasks. The main difficulties lie in the existence of various nonlinear or difficult-to-model effects in PEAs, such as hysteresis, creep, and distributive vibration dynamics. Such effects can seriously degrade the PEA tracking control performances or even lead to instability. This raises a great need to model and control PEAs for improved performance. This research is aimed at developing novel models for PEAs and on this basis, developing model-based control schemes for the PEA tracking control taking into account the aforementioned nonlinear effects. In the first part of this research, a model of a PEA for the effects of hysteresis, creep, and vibration dynamics was developed. Notably, the widely-used Preisach hysteresis model cannot represent the one-sided hysteresis of PEAs. To overcome this shortcoming, a rate-independent hysteresis model based on a novel hysteresis operator modified from the Preisach hysteresis operator was developed, which was then integrated with the models of creep and vibration dynamics to form a comprehensive model for PEAs. For its validation, experiments were carried out on a commercially-available PEA and the results obtained agreed with those from model simulations. By taking into account the linear dynamics and hysteretic behavior of the PEA as well as the presliding friction between the moveable platform and the end-effector, a model of the piezoelectric-driven stick-slip (PDSS) actuator was also developed in the first part of the research. The effectiveness of the developed model was illustrated by the experiments on the PDSS actuator prototyped in the author's lab. In the second part of the research, control schemes were developed based on the aforementioned PEA models for tracking control of PEAs. Firstly, a novel PID-based sliding mode (PIDSM) controller was developed. The rational behind the use of a sliding mode (SM) control is that the SM control can effectively suppress the effects of matched uncertainties, while the PEA hysteresis, creep, and external load can be represented by a lumped matched uncertainty based on the developed model. To solve the chattering and steady-state problems, associated with the ideal SM control and the SM control with boundary layer (SMCBL), the novel PIDSM control developed in the present study replaces the switching control term in the ideal SM control schemes with a PID regulator. Experiments were carried out on a commercially-available PEA and the results obtained illustrate the effectiveness of the PIDSM controller, and its superiorities over other schemes of PID control, ideal SM control, and the SMCBL in terms of steady state error elimination, chattering suppression, and tracking error suppression. Secondly, a PIDSM observer was also developed based on the model of PEAs to provide the PIDSM controller with state estimates of the PEA. And the PIDSM controller and the PIDSM observer were combined to form an integrated control scheme (PIDSM observer-controller or PIDSMOC) for PEAs. The effectiveness of the PIDSM observer and the PIDSMOC were also validated experimentally. The superiority of the PIDSMOC over the PIDSM controller with σ-β filter control scheme was also analyzed and demonstrated experimentally. The significance of this research lies in the development of novel models for PEAs and PDSS actuators, which can be of great help in the design and control of such actuators. Also, the development of the PIDSM controller, the PIDSM observer, and their integrated form, i.e., PIDSMOC, enables the improved performance of tracking control of PEAs with the presence of various nonlinear or difficult-to-model effects

Los procesos industriales comenzaron a demandar precisión en el rango de nanómetros a micrómetros. Pese a que los actuadores convencionales no pueden reducirse lo suficiente ni lograr tal exactitud, los actuadores piezoeléctricos son una tecnología innovadora en este campo y su rendimiento aún está en estudio en la comunidad científica. Los actuadores piezoeléctricos se usan comúnmente en micro y nanomecatrónica para aplicaciones de posicionamiento debido a su alta resolución y fuerza de actuación (pueden llegar a soportar fuerzas de hasta 100 Newtons) en comparación con su tamaño. Todas estas características también se pueden combinar con una actuación rápida y rigidez, según los requisitos de la aplicación. Por lo tanto, con estas características, los actuadores piezoeléctricos pueden ser utilizados en una amplia variedad de aplicaciones industriales. Los efectos negativos, como la fluencia, vibraciones y la histéresis, se estudian comúnmente para mejorar el rendimiento cuando se requiere una alta precisión. Uno de los efectos que más reduce el rendimiento de los PEA es la histéresis. Esto se produce especialmente cuando el actuador está en una aplicación de guiado, por lo que la histéresis puede inducir errores que pueden alcanzar un valor de hasta 22%. Este fenómeno no lineal se puede definir como un efecto generado por la combinación de acciones mecánicas y eléctricas que depende de estados previos. La histéresis se puede reducir principalmente mediante dos estrategias: rediseño de materiales o algoritmos de control tipo feedback. El rediseño de material comprende varias desventajas por lo que el motivo principal de esta tesis está enfocado al diseño de algoritmos de control para reducir la histéresis.     An Optimal Shaped Sensor Array Derivation

    In Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications, the Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation of Guided Waves (GW) on sensor arrays is often used as a fundamental means to locate Acoustic Sources (AS) generated by damages growth or undesired impacts in thin-wall structures (e.g., plates or shells). In this paper, we consider the problem of designing the arrangement and shape of piezo-sensors in planar clusters in order to optimize the DoA estimation performance in noise-affected measurements. We assume that: (i) the wave propagation velocity is unknown, (ii) the DoA is estimated via the time delays of wavefronts between sensors, and (iii) the maximum value of the time delays is limited. The optimality criterion is derived basing on the Theory of Measurements. The sensor array design is so that the DoA variance is minimized in an average sense by exploiting the Calculus of Variations. In this way, considering a three-sensor cluster and a monitored angles sector of 90°, the optimal time delays–DoA relations are derived. A suitable re-shaping procedure is used to impose such relations and, at the same time, to induce the same spatial filtering effect between sensors so that the sensor acquired signals are equal except for a time-shift. In order to achieve the last aim, the sensors shape is realized by exploiting a technique called Error Diffusion, which is able to emulate piezo-load functions with continuously modulated values. In this way, the Shaped Sensors Optimal Cluster (SS-OC) is derived. A numerical assessment via Green’s functions simulations shows improved performance in DoA estimation by means of the SS-OC when compared to clusters realized with conventional piezo-disk transducers

    Finite-time sliding mode control strategies and their applications

    In many engineering applications, faster convergence is always sought, such as manufacturing plants, defence sectors, mechatronic systems. Nowadays, most of the physical systems are operated in a closed-loop environment in conjunction with a controller. Therefore, the controller plays a critical role in determining the speed of the convergence of the entire closed-loop system. Linear controllers are quite popular for their simple design. However, linear controllers provide asymptotic convergence speed, i.e., the actual convergence is obtained when the time reaches an infinitely large amount. Furthermore, linear controllers are not entirely robust in the presence of non-vanishing types of disturbances. It is always important to design robust controllers because of the presence of model imperfections and unknown disturbances in almost all kinds of systems. Therefore, it is necessary to design controllers that are not only robust, but will also provide faster convergence speed. Out of many robust non-linear control strategies, a further development in sliding mode control (SMC) strategy is considered in this thesis because of its simplicity and robustness. There have been many contributions in the SMC field in the last decade. Many existingmethods are available for the SMC design for second-order systems. However, the SMC design becomes extremely complex if the system order increases. Therefore, the first part of this thesis focuses on developing arbitrary-order SMC strategies with a relatively simpler design while providing finite-time convergence. Novel methods are developed with both continuous and discontinuous control structures. The second part of this thesis focuses on developing algorithms to provide even faster convergence speed than that of finite-time convergent algorithms. Some practical applications need strict constraints on time response due to security reasons or to ameliorate the productiveness. For example, a missile or any aerial launch vehicle can be hugely affected by a strong wind gust deviating it from the desired trajectory, thus yielding a significant degree of initial tracking error. It is worth mentioning that the state convergence achieved in SMC during sliding can be either asymptotic or in finite-time, depending on the selection of the surface. Furthermore, it primarily depends on the initial conditions of the states. This provides a motivation to focus on developing SMC controllers where the convergence time does not depend on initial conditions, and a well-defined theoretical analysis is provided in the thesis regarding arbitrary-order fixed-time convergent SMC design. Subsequently, a predefined-time convergent second-order differentiator and observer are proposed. The main advantage of the proposed differentiator is to calculate the derivative of a given signal in fixed-time while the least upper bound of the fixed stabilisation time is equal to a tunable parameter. Similarly, the proposed predefined-time observer is robust with respect to bounded uncertainties and can also be used to estimate the uncertainties. The final part of the thesis is focused on the applications of the proposed algorithms. First of all, a novel third-order SMC is designed for a piezoelectric-driven motion systems achieving better accuracy and control performance. Later on, an experimental validation of the proposed controller is conducted on an induction motor setup. Later, a fixed-time convergent algorithm is proposed for an automatic generation control (AGC) of a multi-area interconnected power system while considering the non-linearities in the dynamic system. The final part is focused on developing fixed-time convergent algorithms in a co-operative environment. The reason for selecting such a system is the presence of the highest degree of uncertainties. To this end, a novel distributed algorithm is developed for achieving second-order consensus in the multiagent systems by designing a full-order fixed-time convergent sliding surface

    Smart Material Wing Morphing for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

    Morphing, or geometric adaptation to off-design conditions, has been considered in aircraft design since the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight. Decades later, smooth, bio-mimetic shape variation for control over aerodynamic forces still remains elusive. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are prime targets for morphing implementation as they must adapt to large changes in flight conditions associated with locally varying wind or large changes in mass associated with payload delivery. The Spanwise Morphing Trailing Edge (SMTE) concept is developed to locally vary the trailing edge camber of a wing or control surface, functioning as a modular replacement for conventional ailerons without altering the wing’s spar box. The SMTE design was realized utilizing alternating active sections of Macro Fiber Composites (MFCs) driving internal elastomeric compliant mechanisms and passive sections of anisotropic, elastomeric skin with tailorable stiffness, produced by additive manufacturing. Experimental investigations of the modular design via a new scaling methodology for reduced-span test articles revealed that increased use of more MFCs within the active section did not increase aerodynamic performance due to asymmetric voltage constraints. The comparative mass and aerodynamic gains for the SMTE concept are evaluated for a representative finite wing as compared with a conventional, articulated flap wing. Informed by a simplistic system model and measured control derivatives, experimental investigations identified a reduction in the adaptive drag penalty up to 20% at off-design conditions. To investigate the potential for augmented aeroelastic performance and actuation range, a hybrid multiple-smart material morphing concept, the Synergistic Smart Morphing Aileron (SSMA), is introduced. The SSMA leverages the properties of two different smart material actuators to achieve performance exceeding that of the constituent materials. Utilizing the relatively higher work density and phase transformation of Shape-Memory Alloys combined with the larger bandwidth and conformal bending of MFCs, the resultant design is demonstrated to achieve the desired goals while providing additional control authority at stall and for unsteady conditions through synergistic use of reflex actuation. These advances highlight and motivate new morphing structures for the growing field of UAVs in which adaptation involves advanced compliance tailoring of complex geometry with synergistic actuation of embedded, smart materials.PhDAerospace EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
