    Design of a Mobile Transceiver for Precision Indoor Location

    This thesis documents the design and implementation process for the next generation of the WPI Precision Personnel Location (PPL) system hardware. The driving goal of the new hardware was to support a new method of radio frequency location developed at WPI referred to as Transactional Array Reconciliation Tomography (TART). This new method is based on a time of arrival (TOA) technique as opposed to the previous Singular Value Array Reconciliation Tomography (SART), which uses time difference of arrival (TDOA). The use of a TOA method requires additional timing information and necessitates a bidirectional (transmit and receive) multicarrier transaction. The design of the new transceiver that can function as both a mobile locator and a static reference unit is the main focus of this thesis. This redesign also addressed previous hardware issues that have been exposed through extensive use in real world testing

    Techniques to Improve the Efficiency of Data Transmission in Cable Networks

    The cable television (CATV) networks, since their introduction in the late 1940s, have now become a crucial part of the broadcasting industry. To keep up with growing demands from the subscribers, cable networks nowadays not only provide television programs but also deliver two-way interactive services such as telephone, high-speed Internet and social TV features. A new standard for CATV networks is released every five to six years to satisfy the growing demands from the mass market. From this perspective, this thesis is concerned with three main aspects for the continuing development of cable networks: (i) efficient implementations of backward-compatibility functions from the old standard, (ii) addressing and providing solutions for technically-challenging issues in the current standard and, (iii) looking for prospective features that can be implemented in the future standard. Since 1997, five different versions of the digital CATV standard had been released in North America. A new standard often contains major improvements over the previous one. The latest version of the standard, namely DOCSIS 3.1 (released in late 2013), is packed with state-of-the-art technologies and allows approximately ten times the amount of traffic as compared to the previous standard, DOCSIS 3.0 (released in 2008). Backward-compatibility is a must-have function for cable networks. In particular, to facilitate the system migration from older standards to a newer one, the backward compatible functions in the old standards must remain in the newer-standard products. More importantly, to keep the implementation cost low, the inherited backward compatible functions must be redesigned by taking advantage of the latest technology and algorithms. To improve the backward-compatibility functions, the first contribution of the thesis focuses on redesigning the pulse shaping filter by exploiting infinite impulse response (IIR) filter structures as an alternative to the conventional finite impulse response (FIR) structures. Comprehensive comparisons show that more economical filters with better performance can be obtained by the proposed design algorithm, which considers a hybrid parameterization of the filter's transfer function in combination with a constraint on the pole radius to be less than 1. The second contribution of the thesis is a new fractional timing estimation algorithm based on peak detection by log-domain interpolation. When compared with the commonly-used timing detection method, which is based on parabolic interpolation, the proposed algorithm yields more accurate estimation with a comparable implementation cost. The third contribution of the thesis is a technique to estimate the multipath channel for DOCSIS 3.1 cable networks. DOCSIS 3.1 is markedly different from prior generations of CATV networks in that OFDM/OFDMA is employed to create a spectrally-efficient signal. In order to effectively demodulate such a signal, it is necessary to employ a demodulation circuit which involves estimation and tracking of the multipath channel. The estimation and tracking must be highly accurate because extremely dense constellations such as 4096-QAM and possibly 16384-QAM can be used in DOCSIS 3.1. The conventional OFDM channel estimators available in the literature either do not perform satisfactorily or are not suitable for the DOCSIS 3.1 channel. The novel channel estimation technique proposed in this thesis iteratively searches for parameters of the channel paths. The proposed technique not only substantially enhances the channel estimation accuracy, but also can, at no cost, accurately identify the delay of each echo in the system. The echo delay information is valuable for proactive maintenance of the network. The fourth contribution of this thesis is a novel scheme that allows OFDM transmission without the use of a cyclic prefix (CP). The structure of OFDM in the current DOCSIS 3.1 does not achieve the maximum throughput if the channel has multipath components. The multipath channel causes inter-symbol-interference (ISI), which is commonly mitigated by employing CP. The CP acts as a guard interval that, while successfully protecting the signal from ISI, reduces the transmission throughput. The problem becomes more severe for downstream direction, where the throughput of the entire system is determined by the user with the worst channel. To solve the problem, this thesis proposes major alterations to the current DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM/OFDMA structure. The alterations involve using a pair of Nyquist filters at the transceivers and an efficient time-domain equalizer (TEQ) at the receiver to reduce ISI down to a negligible level without the need of CP. Simulation results demonstrate that, by incorporating the proposed alterations to the DOCSIS 3.1 down-link channel, the system can achieve the maximum throughput over a wide range of multipath channel conditions

    Analog Signal Buffering and Reconstruction

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are capable of a myriad of tasks, from monitoring critical infrastructure such as bridges to monitoring a person\u27s vital signs in biomedical applications. However, their deployment is impractical for many applications due to their limited power budget. Sleep states are one method used to conserve power in resource-constrained systems, but they necessitate a wake-up circuit for detecting unpredictable events. In conventional wake-up-based systems, all information preceding a wake-up event will be forfeited. To avoid this data loss, it is necessary to include a buffer that can record prelude information without sacrificing the power savings garnered by the active use of sleep states.;Unfortunately, traditional memory buffer systems utilize digital electronics which are costly in terms of power. Instead of operating in the target signal\u27s native analog environment, a digital buffer must first expend a great deal of energy to convert the signal into a digital signal. This issue is further compounded by the use of traditional Nyquist sampling which does not adapt to the characteristics of a dynamically changing signal. These characteristics reveal why a digital buffer is not an appropriate choice for a WSN or other resource-constrained system.;This thesis documents the development of an analog pre-processing block that buffers an incoming signal using a new method of sampling. This method requires sampling only local maxima and minima (both amplitude and time), effectively approximating the instantaneous Nyquist rate throughout a time-varying signal. The use of this sampling method along with ultra-low-power analog electronics enables the entire system to operate in the muW power levels. In addition to these power saving techniques, a reconfigurable architecture will be explored as infrastructure for this system. This reconfigurable architecture will also be leveraged to explore wake-up circuits that can be used in parallel with the buffer system

    Performance of the LHCb vertex locator

    The Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon microstrip detector that surrounds the proton-proton interaction region in the LHCb experiment. The performance of the detector during the first years of its physics operation is reviewed. The system is operated in vacuum, uses a bi-phase CO2 cooling system, and the sensors are moved to 7 mm from the LHC beam for physics data taking. The performance and stability of these characteristic features of the detector are described, and details of the material budget are given. The calibration of the timing and the data processing algorithms that are implemented in FPGAs are described. The system performance is fully characterised. The sensors have a signal to noise ratio of approximately 20 and a best hit resolution of 4 μm is achieved at the optimal track angle. The typical detector occupancy for minimum bias events in standard operating conditions in 2011 is around 0.5%, and the detector has less than 1% of faulty strips. The proximity of the detector to the beam means that the inner regions of the n+-on-n sensors have undergone space-charge sign inversion due to radiation damage. The VELO performance parameters that drive the experiment's physics sensitivity are also given. The track finding efficiency of the VELO is typically above 98% and the modules have been aligned to a precision of 1 μm for translations in the plane transverse to the beam. A primary vertex resolution of 13 μm in the transverse plane and 71 μm along the beam axis is achieved for vertices with 25 tracks. An impact parameter resolution of less than 35 μm is achieved for particles with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c

    Infrared horizon sensor modeling for attitude determination and control: Analysis and mission experience

    The work performed by the Attitude Determination and Control Section at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center in analyzing and evaluating the performance of infrared horizon sensors is presented. The results of studies performed during the 1960s are reviewed; several models for generating the Earth's infrared radiance profiles are presented; and the Horizon Radiance Modeling Utility, the software used to model the horizon sensor optics and electronics processing to computer radiance-dependent attitude errors, is briefly discussed. Also provided is mission experience from 12 spaceflight missions spanning the period from 1973 to 1984 and using a variety of horizon sensing hardware. Recommendations are presented for future directions for the infrared horizon sensing technology

    The STACEE-32 Ground Based Gamma-ray Detector

    We describe the design and performance of the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment detector in its initial configuration (STACEE-32). STACEE is a new ground-based gamma ray detector using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique. In STACEE, the heliostats of a solar energy research array are used to collect and focus the Cherenkov photons produced in gamma-ray induced air showers. The large Cherenkov photon collection area of STACEE results in a gamma-ray energy threshold below that of previous detectors.Comment: 45 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods

    Comparison of wind velocity in thunderstorms determined from measurements by a ground-based Doppler radar and an F-106B airplane

    As a part of the NASA Storm Hazards Program, the wind velocity in several thunderstorms was measured by an F-106B instrumented airplane and a ground-based Doppler radar. The results of five airplane penetrations of two storms in 1980 and six penetrations of one storm in 1981 are given. Comparisons were made between the radial wind velocity components measured by the radar and the airplane. The correlation coefficients for the 1980 data and part of the 1981 data were 0.88 and 0.78, respectively. It is suggested that larger values for these coefficients may be obtained by improving the experimental technique and in particular by slaving the radar to track the airplane during such tests

    Diagnostics and control of wavenumber stability and purity of tunable diode lasers relevant to their use as local oscillators in heterodyne systems

    Initial operation of the tunable diode lasers (TDL) showed that it was not possible to adjust the wavenumber to one selected a priori in the TDL tuning range. During operation, the operating point would change by 0.1/cm over the longer term with even larger changes occurring during some thermal cycles. Most changes during thermal cycling required using lower temperatures and higher currents to reach the former wavenumber (when it could be reached). In many cases, an operating point could be selected by changing TDL current and temperature to give both the desired wavenumber and most of the power in a single mode. The selection procedure had to be used after each thermal cycling. Wavenumber nonlinearities of about 10% over a 0.5 cm tuning range were observed. Diagnostics of the single mode selected by a grating monochromator showed wavenumber fine structure under certain operating conditions. The characteristics due to the TDL environment included short term wavenumber stability, the instrument lineshape function, and intermediate term wavenumber stability

    Hydrogeophysics of gravel-dominated alluvial floodplains in eastern Oklahoma

    Scope and Method of Study: Geophysical and hydraulic surveys of three floodplains in eastern Oklahoma with the purpose of estimating floodplain heterogeneity and identifying high-flow domains or preferential flow paths.Multi-electrode surface electrical resistivity (ERI) profiles of the floodplains show lenticular features with high resistivity within a domain of lower resistivity. Floodplain subsoil is composed of mixture of coarse and fine fractions (less than 0.25 mm). The proportion of the fine fraction from cores at the sites shows a negative power relationship with both resistivity (R 2 = 0.85) and hydraulic conductivity (R 2 = 0.72), suggesting that the fine content is the major factor in the hydraulic and electrical behavior of the gravel subsoil. A linear relationship between hydraulic conductivity and resistivity is significant and the resulting equation K sat = 0.11ρ; allows resistivity (ρ) to be interpreted as saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K sat ). The median hydraulic conductivity on all profiles from all sites was at least 20 m d -1 , which is within the range for gravel soils. This high hydraulic conductivity suggests that at least half of the subsurface at each floodplain is likely to behave as a "high-flow domain" with the ability to conduct water at rates of 20 m d -1 or greater. Several ERI profiles at Barren Fork Creek (BFC) had high resistivity values that were significantly higher than the remaining ERI profiles at BFC and the other sites measured at the 84 th percentile. Those ERI profiles were obtained from an area within the BFC study site where a trench injection test found a tracer (Rhodamine WT) to move in a manner that suggests preferential flow. A storm runoff pulse passed the BFC site over May 1-5, 2009 featuring 2.2 m of stage increase, which caused the water table to rise into the gravel-dominated vadose zone at the site. Water table maps, corresponding to the times when stream elevation matched the selected hydraulic conductivity elevations, were prepared from pressure transducers placed in monitoring wells at the site. It appeared that there was little attenuation of the energy of the storm pulse even at the furthest point in the study site: at 180 m from the stream the flood peak had only dropped 0.25 m and was delayed by 1.5 hours, suggesting that the floodplain was a "high-flow domain". Comparisons between depth slices of hydraulic conductivity, created by interpolating the ERI profiles, and the water table maps showed that areas of highest resistivity coincided with areas of relatively low water table slope and vice versa. Since high hydraulic conductivity implies less resistance to flow (and less loss of energy over distance), this is the response one would expect to see. Therefore, despite the floodplain as a whole constituting a high-flow domain, areas of preferential flow exist within the floodplain, characterized by highs in both hydraulic conductivity and resistivity
