    A PC-based data acquisition system for sub-atomic physics measurements

    Modern particle physics measurements are heavily dependent upon automated data acquisition systems (DAQ) to collect and process experiment-generated information. One research group from the University of Saskatchewan utilizes a DAQ known as the Lucid data acquisition and analysis system. This thesis examines the project undertaken to upgrade the hardware and software components of Lucid. To establish the effectiveness of the system upgrades, several performance metrics were obtained including the system's dead time and input/output bandwidth.Hardware upgrades to Lucid consisted of replacing its aging digitization equipment with modern, faster-converting Versa-Module Eurobus (VME) technology and replacing the instrumentation processing platform with common, PC hardware. The new processor platform is coupled to the instrumentation modules via a fiber-optic bridging-device, the sis1100/3100 from Struck Innovative Systems.The software systems of Lucid were also modified to follow suit with the new hardware. Originally constructed to utilize a proprietary real-time operating system, the data acquisition application was ported to run under the freely available Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems (RTEMS). The device driver software provided with sis1100/3100 interface also had to be ported for use under the RTEMS-based system. Performance measurements of the upgraded DAQ indicate that the dead time has been reduced from being on the order of milliseconds to being on the order of several tens of microseconds. This increased capability means that Lucid's users may acquire significantly more data in a shorter period of time, thereby decreasing both the statistical uncertainties and data collection duration associated with a given experiment

    Towards automatic traffic classification and estimation for available bandwidth in IP networks.

    Growing rapidly, today's Internet is becoming more difficult to manage. A good understanding of what kind of network traffic classes are consuming network resource as well as how much network resource is available is important for many management tasks like QoS provisioning and traffic engineering. In the light of these objectives, two measurement mechanisms have been explored in this thesis. This thesis explores a new type of traffic classification scheme with automatic and accurate identification capability. First of all, the novel concept of IP flow profile, a unique identifier to the associated traffic class, has been proposed and the relevant model using five IP header based contexts has been presented. Then, this thesis shows that the key statistical features of each context, in the IP flow profile, follows a Gaussian distribution and explores how to use Kohonen Neural Network (KNN) for the purpose of automatically producing IP flow profile map. In order to improve the classification accuracy, this thesis investigates and evaluates the use of PCA for feature selection, which enables the produced patterns to be as tight as possible since tight patterns lead to less overlaps among patterns. In addition, the use of Linear Discriminant Analysis and alternative KNN maps has been investigated as to deal with the overlap issue between produced patterns. The entirety of this process represents a novel addition to the quest for automatic traffic classification in IP networks. This thesis also develops a fast available bandwidth measurement scheme. It firstly addresses the dynamic problem for the one way delay (OWD) trend detection. To deal with this issue, a novel model - asymptotic OWD Comparison (AOC) model for the OWD trend detection has been proposed. Then, three statistical metrics SOT (Sum of Trend), PTC (Positive Trend Checking) and CTC (Complete Trend Comparison) have been proposed to develop the AOC algorithms. To validate the proposed AOC model, an avail-bw estimation tool called Pathpair has been developed and evaluated in the Planetlah environment

    Development of the control system of the ALICE Transition Radiation Detector and of a test environment for quality-assurance of its front-end electronics

    Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde das Detektor-Kontroll-System (DCS) für den Übergangsstrahlungsdetektor (TRD) des ALICE Experiments am Large Hadron Collider entwickelt. Das TRD Kontrollsystem ist vollständig implementiert als eine detektororientierte Hierarchie von Objekten, welche sich wie End-Zustandsautomaten verhalten. Es kontrolliert und überwacht über 65 tausend front-end Elektronik (FEE) Einheiten, einige hundert low-voltage und eintausend high-voltage Kanäle, sowie weitere Subsysteme wie Kühlung und Gasversorgung. Die Inbetriebnahme des TRD Kontrollsystems fand während mehrerer Datennahmen mit ALICE unter Verwendung von Ereignissen aus der kosmischen Strahlung statt. In einem weiteren Teil dieser Arbeit wurde ein Test-setup zur Qualitätssicherung der Massenproduktion von über viertausend FEE Readout-boards mit insgesamt 1.2 Millionen elektronischen Auslesekanälen des TRD entwickelt. Die Hardware- und Softwarekomponenten werden im Detail beschrieben. Zusätzlich wurde vorher eine Reihe von Leistungsuntersuchungen durchgeführt, welche die Strahlungstoleranz des TRAP-chips überprüft, der den Haupt\-bestandteil der TRD-FEE darstellt
