    Statistical Methods for Polarimetric Imagery

    Estimation theory is applied to a physical model of incoherent polarized light to address problems in polarimetric image registration, restoration, and analysis for electro-optical imaging systems. In the image registration case, the Cramer-Rao lower bound on unbiased joint estimates of the registration parameters and the underlying scene is derived, simplified using matrix methods, and used to explain the behavior of multi-channel linear polarimetric imagers. In the image restoration case, a polarimetric maximum likelihood blind deconvolution algorithm is derived and tested using laboratory and simulated imagery. Finally, a principal components analysis is derived for polarization imaging systems. This analysis expands upon existing research by including an allowance for partially polarized and unpolarized light

    Spectral LADAR: Active Range-Resolved Imaging Spectroscopy

    Imaging spectroscopy using ambient or thermally generated optical sources is a well developed technique for capturing two dimensional images with high per-pixel spectral resolution. The per-pixel spectral data is often a sufficient sampling of a material's backscatter spectrum to infer chemical properties of the constituent material to aid in substance identification. Separately, conventional LADAR sensors use quasi-monochromatic laser radiation to create three dimensional images of objects at high angular resolution, compared to RADAR. Advances in dispersion engineered photonic crystal fibers in recent years have made high spectral radiance optical supercontinuum sources practical, enabling this study of Spectral LADAR, a continuous polychromatic spectrum augmentation of conventional LADAR. This imaging concept, which combines multi-spectral and 3D sensing at a physical level, is demonstrated with 25 independent and parallel LADAR channels and generates point cloud images with three spatial dimensions and one spectral dimension. The independence of spectral bands is a key characteristic of Spectral LADAR. Each spectral band maintains a separate time waveform record, from which target parameters are estimated. Accordingly, the spectrum computed for each backscatter reflection is independently and unambiguously range unmixed from multiple target reflections that may arise from transmission of a single panchromatic pulse. This dissertation presents the theoretical background of Spectral LADAR, a shortwave infrared laboratory demonstrator system constructed as a proof-of-concept prototype, and the experimental results obtained by the prototype when imaging scenes at stand off ranges of 45 meters. The resultant point cloud voxels are spectrally classified into a number of material categories which enhances object and feature recognition. Experimental results demonstrate the physical level combination of active backscatter spectroscopy and range resolved sensing to produce images with a level of complexity, detail, and accuracy that is not obtainable with data-level registration and fusion of conventional imaging spectroscopy and LADAR. The capabilities of Spectral LADAR are expected to be useful in a range of applications, such as biomedical imaging and agriculture, but particularly when applied as a sensor in unmanned ground vehicle navigation. Applications to autonomous mobile robotics are the principal motivators of this study, and are specifically addressed

    High resolution polarimetric imaging of biophysical objects using synthetic aperture radar.

    A synthetic aperture microwave near-field system is used to image biophysical objects in order to investigate the nature of radar-target interaction. Two different imaging algorithms for focusing data collected over a two-dimensional planar aperture are investigated. The first of these is the single frequency backward propagation technique which is mathematically simple to implement and provides a high degree of resolution. Secondly, a multifrequency development of the backward propagation algorithm is presented and derived from two separate perspectives. This latter algorithm, known as the auto-focusing algorithm, requires no information about the range of the target from the aperture. Full characterisation by simulation of both algorithms is carried out and different filtering techniques are investigated. The backward propagation algorithm is applied to the polarimetric imaging of three different leafless trees and a sugar beet plant at the X-band frequency of 10GHz. The images so produced demonstrate that the backscattered signal is dependent on the orientation of individual tree elements with respect to the polarisation. Furthermore, multiple scattering terms can be identified within the structure of the tree. The auto-focusing algorithm is applied to the polarimetric imaging of two trees at 10GHz and repeat measurements are made over several months. As with the single frequency measurements, the backscattered signal is dependent on the orientation of individual tree elements relative to the polarisation. The relative contributions from the leaves and branches of the trees to the backscattered signal are assessed and found to be seasonally dependent. Measurements are also carried out to investigate the variation of backscatter from a beech tree with varying incidence angle. It is demonstrated that at small angles of incidence, the leaves are the dominant source of backscatter but at large incidence angles, the branches and trunk of the tree have the greatest contrbution

    Performance factors for airborne short-dwell squinted radar sensors

    Millimetre-wave radar in a missile seeker for the engagement of ground targets allows all-weather, day and night, surface imaging and has the ability to detect, classify and geolocate objects at long ranges. The use of a seeker allows intelligent target selection and removes inaccuracies in the target position. The selection of the correct target against a cluttered background in radar imagery is a challenging problem, which is further constrained by the seeker’s hardware and flight-path. This thesis examines how to make better use of the components of radar imagery that support target selection. Image formation for a squinted radar seeker is described, followed by an approach to automatic target recognition. Size and shape information is considered using a model-matching approach that is not reliant on extensive databases of templates, but a limited set of shape-only templates to reject clutter objects. The effects of radar sensitivity on size measurements are then explored to understand seeker operation in poor weather. Size measures cannot easily be used for moving targets, where the target signature is distorted and displaced. The ability to detect, segment and measure vehicle dimensions and velocity from the shadows of moving targets is tested using real and simulated data. The choice of polarisation can affect the quality of measurements and the ability to reject clutter. Data from three different radars is examined to help to understand the performance using linear and circular polarisations. For sensors operating at shorter ranges, the application of elevation monopulse to include target height as a discriminant is tested, showing good potential on simulated data. The combination of these studies offers an insight into the performance factors that influence the design and processing of a radar seeker.     High-resolution, slant-angle scene generation and validation of concealed targets in DIRSIG

    Traditionally, synthetic imagery has been constructed to simulate images captured with low resolution, nadir-viewing sensors. Advances in sensor design have driven a need to simulate scenes not only at higher resolutions but also from oblique view angles. The primary efforts of this research include: real image capture, scene construction and modeling, and validation of the synthetic imagery in the reflective portion of the spectrum. High resolution imagery was collected of an area named MicroScene at the Rochester Institute of Technology using the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science\u27s MISI and WASP sensors using an oblique view angle. Three Humvees, the primary targets, were placed in the scene under three different levels of concealment. Following the collection, a synthetic replica of the scene was constructed and then rendered with the Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model configured to recreate the scene both spatially and spectrally based on actual sensor characteristics. Finally, a validation of the synthetic imagery against the real images of MicroScene was accomplished using a combination of qualitative analysis, Gaussian maximum likelihood classification, grey-level co-occurrence matrix derived texture metrics, and the RX algorithm. The model was updated following each validation using a cyclical development approach. The purpose of this research is to provide a level of confidence in the synthetic imagery produced by DIRSIG so that it can be used to train and develop algorithms for real world concealed target detection
