Internet has played a vital role in this modern world, the possibilities and opportunities offered are limitless. Despite all the hype, Internet services are liable to intrusion attack that could tamper the confidentiality and integrity of important information. An attack started with gathering the information of the attack target, this gathering of information activity can be done as either fast or slow attack. The defensive measure network administrator can take to overcome this liability is by introducing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) in their network. IDS have the capabilities to analyze the network traffic and recognize incoming and on-going intrusion. Unfortunately the combination of both modules in real time network traffic slowed down the detection process. In real time network, early detection of fast attack can prevent any further attack and reduce the unauthorized access on the targeted machine. The suitable set of feature selection and the correct threshold value, add an extra advantage for IDS to detect anomalies in the network. Therefore this paper discusses a new technique for selecting static threshold value from a minimum standard features in detecting fast attack from the victim perspective. In order to increase the confidence of the threshold value the result is verified using Statistical Process Control (SPC). The implementation of this approach shows that the threshold selected is suitable for identifying the fast attack in real time.Comment: 8 Pages, International Journal of Computer Science and Information Securit

Due to speedy development in internet facilities, detecting intrusions in a real-time cloud environment is challenging via traditional methods. In this case, advanced machine or deep learning methods can be efficiently used in anomaly or intrusion detection. Thus, the present study focuses on designing and developing the intrusion detection scheme using an ensemble learning-based random forest method and deep convolutional neural networks in a near real-time cloud atmosphere. The proposed models were tested on CSE-CICIDS2018 datasets in Python (Anaconda 3) environment. The proposed models achieved 97.73 and 99.91 per cent accuracy using random forest and deep convolutional neural networks, respectively. The developed models can be effectively utilised in real-time cloud datasets to detect intrusions

Intrusion detection has attracted a considerable interest from researchers and industry. After many years of research the community still faces the problem of building reliable and efficient intrusion detection systems (IDS) capable of handling large quantities of data with changing patterns in real time situations. The Tor network is popular in providing privacy and security to end user by anonymizing the identity of internet users connecting through a series of tunnels and nodes. This work identifies two problems; classification of Tor traffic and nonTor traffic to expose the activities within Tor traffic that minimizes the protection of users in using the UNB-CIC Tor Network Traffic dataset and classification of the Tor traffic flow in the network. This paper proposes a hybrid classifier; Artificial Neural Network in conjunction with Correlation feature selection algorithm for dimensionality reduction and improved classification performance. The reliability and efficiency of the propose hybrid classifier is compared with Support Vector Machine and naïve Bayes classifiers in detecting nonTor traffic in UNB-CIC Tor Network Traffic dataset. Experimental results show the hybrid classifier, ANN-CFS proved a better classifier in detecting nonTor traffic and classifying the Tor traffic flow in UNB-CIC Tor Network Traffic dataset

Intrusion detection system is a system for detecting attacks or intrusions in a network or computer system, generally intrusion detection is done with comparing network traffic pattern with known attack pattern or with finding unnormal pattern of network traffic. The raise of internet activity has increase the number of packet data that must be analyzed for build the attack or normal pattern, this situation led to the possibility that the system can not detect the intrusion with a new technique, so it needs a system that can automaticaly build a pattern or model. This research have a goal to build an intrusion detection system with ability to create a model automaticaly and can detect the intrusion in real-time environment with using support vector machine method as a one of data mining method for classifying network traffic audit data in 3 classes, namely: normal, probe, and DoS. Audit data was established from preprocessing of network packet capture files that obtained from Tshark. Based on the test result, the sistem can help system administrator to build a model or pattern automaticaly with high accuracy, high attack detection rate, and low false positive rate. The sistem also can run in real-time environment

Technology evolves quickly. Low-cost and ready-to-connect devices are designed to provide new services and applications. Smart grids or smart health care systems are some examples of these applications. In this totally connected scenario, some security issues arise due to the large number of devices and communications. In this way, new solutions for monitoring and detecting security events are needed to address new challenges brought about by this scenario, among others, the real-time requirement allowing quick security event detection and, consequently, quick response to attacks. In this sense, Intrusion Detection Systems are widely used though their evaluation often relies on the use of predefined network datasets that limit their application in real environments. In this work, a real-time and ready-to-use tool for monitoring and detecting security events is introduced. The Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring-Sensor is based on the Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring methodology and provides an alternative way for evaluating Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring-based Intrusion Detection System solutions. Experimental results based on the detection of well-known attacks in hierarchical network systems prove the suitability of this tool for complex scenarios, such as those found in smart cities or Internet of Things ecosystem

Real Time Hybrid Intrusion Detection System Using Apache Storm

Networks are prone to intrusions and detecting intruders on the internet is a major problem. Many Intrusion Detection Systems have been proposed to detect these intrusions. However, as the internet grows day by day, there is a huge amount of data (big data) that needs to be processed to detect intruders. For this reason, intrusion detection has to be done in real- time before intruders can inflict damage, and previous detection systems do not satisfy this need for big data.Using Apache Storm, a Real time Hybrid Intrusion Detection System has been developed in our thesis. Apache Storm serves as a distributed, fault tolerant, real time big data stream processor. The hybrid detection system consists of two neural networks. The CC4 instan- taneous neural network acts as an anomaly-based detection for unknown attacks and the Multi Layer Perceptron neural network acts as a misuse-based detection for known attacks. Based on the outputs from these two neural networks, the incoming data will be classified as attack or normal. We found the average accuracy of hybrid detection system is 89% with a 4.32% false positive rate. This model is appropriate for real time detection since Apache Storm acts as a real time streaming processor, which can also handle big data.Computer Scienc
