    Sensemaking on the Pragmatic Web: A Hypermedia Discourse Perspective

    The complexity of the dilemmas we face on an organizational, societal and global scale forces us into sensemaking activity. We need tools for expressing and contesting perspectives flexible enough for real time use in meetings, structured enough to help manage longer term memory, and powerful enough to filter the complexity of extended deliberation and debate on an organizational or global scale. This has been the motivation for a programme of basic and applied action research into Hypermedia Discourse, which draws on research in hypertext, information visualization, argumentation, modelling, and meeting facilitation. This paper proposes that this strand of work shares a key principle behind the Pragmatic Web concept, namely, the need to take seriously diverse perspectives and the processes of meaning negotiation. Moreover, it is argued that the hypermedia discourse tools described instantiate this principle in practical tools which permit end-user control over modelling approaches in the absence of consensus

    On Intelligence Augmentation and Visual Analytics to Enhance Clinical Decision Support Systems

    Human-in-the-loop intelligence augmentation (IA) methods combined with visual analytics (VA) have the potential to provide additional functional capability and cognitively driven interpretability to Decision Support Systems (DSS) for health risk assessment and patient-clinician shared decision making. This paper presents some key ideas underlying the synthesis of IA with VA (IA/VA) and the challenges in the design, implementation, and use of IA/VA-enabled clinical decision support systems (CDSS) in the practice of medicine through data driven analytical models. An illustrative IA/VA solution provides a visualization of the distribution of health risk, and the impact of various parameters on the assessment, at the population and individual levels. It also allows the clinician to ask “what-if” questions using interactive visualizations that change actionable risk factors of the patient and visually assess their impact. This approach holds promise in enhancing decision support systems design, deployment and use outside the medical sphere as well

    New Multimodal Designs for Foreign Language Learning

    Semiotiske multimodale teorier taler om nye affordanser (”handlemuligheder”) i medie- og læringslandskaber, hvilket både teoretisk og empirisk møder genklang i Universal Design for Learning (UDL) -og Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)-litteraturen, men pga. de to tilganges henholdsvis neurodidaktiske og teknologiske orientering mangler begge et teoretisk fundament inden for semiotisk multimodalitet og læringsøkologi. Beriget med multimodalitetsteori og økologiske perspektiver kan UDL og CALL krydsbefrugtes til at danne et multimodalt og økologisk bevidst inkluderende design for sprogindlæring. Denne hypotese undersøges teoretisk som en del af et igangværende projekt og dernæst i et empirisk undersøgelsesdesign, der udforsker digital stilladsering. Multimodale og økologiske perspektiver anvendes til at analysere affordanser og økologier i CALL- og UDL-baserede læringsdesign. På baggrund af denne analyse opbygges et principstyret UDL-CALL læringsdesign. Til den empiriske afprøvning foreslås et mixed-methods-undersøgelsesdesign, og foreløbige undersøgelsesresultater præsenteres, der antyder UDL-CALL-designets gangbarhed.Semiotic multimodality theory speaks of new learning affordances in media ecologies, which is both theoretically and empirically echoed in UDL and in CALL literature, but owing to their neuro-didactic respectively technology-driven standpoints both approaches lack theoretical underpinnings for ecology and semiotic multimodality. Enhanced with multimodality theory and ecological perspectives UDL and CALL can crossbreed, forming a multimodally and ecologically aware inclusive design for language learning. This study from an ongoing project investigates the hypothesis from a theoretical and an empirical perspective, examining digital scaffolds. Multimodal-semiotic and ecological perspectives are used to analyse affordances and ecologies in CALL and UDL learning designs. From this analysis, a principled UDL-CALL learning design is constructed. For empirical testing, a mixed-methods research design is proposed, presenting preliminary results indicative of the design’s viability

    Intelligence Augmentation: Towards Building Human-Machine Symbiotic Relationship

    Artificial intelligence, which people originally modeled after human intelligence, has made significant advances in recent years. These advances have caused many to fear that machines will surpass human intelligence and dominate humans. Intelligence augmentation (IA) has the potential to turn the tension between the two intelligence types into a symbiotic one. Although IA has not gained momentum until recent years, the idea that machines can amplify human abilities has existed for many decades. Expanded from a panel discussion on Intelligence Augmentation at the 2020 International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS), we define IA in light of its history and evolution and classify IA based on its capabilities, roles, and responsibilities. Based on reviewing the IA literature in terms of research themes, enabling technology, and applications, we identify key research issues, challenges, and future opportunities

    Tangible user interfaces : past, present and future directions

    In the last two decades, Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have emerged as a new interface type that interlinks the digital and physical worlds. Drawing upon users' knowledge and skills of interaction with the real non-digital world, TUIs show a potential to enhance the way in which people interact with and leverage digital information. However, TUI research is still in its infancy and extensive research is required in or- der to fully understand the implications of tangible user interfaces, to develop technologies that further bridge the digital and the physical, and to guide TUI design with empirical knowledge. This paper examines the existing body of work on Tangible User In- terfaces. We start by sketching the history of tangible user interfaces, examining the intellectual origins of this eld. We then present TUIs in a broader context, survey application domains, and review frame- works and taxonomies. We also discuss conceptual foundations of TUIs including perspectives from cognitive sciences, phycology, and philoso- phy. Methods and technologies for designing, building, and evaluating TUIs are also addressed. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limita- tions of TUIs and chart directions for future research

    Hypertext Semiotics in the Commercialized Internet

    Die Hypertext Theorie verwendet die selbe Terminologie, welche seit Jahrzehnten in der semiotischen Forschung untersucht wird, wie z.B. Zeichen, Text, Kommunikation, Code, Metapher, Paradigma, Syntax, usw. Aufbauend auf jenen Ergebnissen, welche in der Anwendung semiotischer Prinzipien und Methoden auf die Informatik erfolgreich waren, wie etwa Computer Semiotics, Computational Semiotics und Semiotic Interface Engineering, legt diese Dissertation einen systematischen Ansatz fßr all jene Forscher dar, die bereit sind, Hypertext aus einer semiotischen Perspektive zu betrachten. Durch die Verknßpfung existierender Hypertext-Modelle mit den Resultaten aus der Semiotik auf allen Sinnesebenen der textuellen, auditiven, visuellen, taktilen und geruchlichen Wahrnehmung skizziert der Autor Prolegomena einer Hypertext-Semiotik-Theorie, anstatt ein vÜllig neues Hypertext-Modell zu präsentieren. Eine Einfßhrung in die Geschichte der Hypertexte, von ihrer Vorgeschichte bis zum heutigen Entwicklungsstand und den gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen im kommerzialisierten World Wide Web bilden den Rahmen fßr diesen Ansatz, welcher als Fundierung des Brßckenschlages zwischen Mediensemiotik und Computer-Semiotik angesehen werden darf. Während Computer-Semiotiker wissen, dass der Computer eine semiotische Maschine ist und Experten der kßnstlichen Intelligenz-Forschung die Rolle der Semiotik in der Entwicklung der nächsten Hypertext-Generation betonen, bedient sich diese Arbeit einer breiteren methodologischen Basis. Dementsprechend reichen die Teilgebiete von Hypertextanwendungen, -paradigmen, und -strukturen, ßber Navigation, Web Design und Web Augmentation zu einem interdisziplinären Spektrum detaillierter Analysen, z.B. des Zeigeinstrumentes der Web Browser, des Klammeraffen-Zeichens und der sogenannten Emoticons. Die Bezeichnung ''Icon'' wird als unpassender Name fßr jene Bildchen, welche von der graphischen Benutzeroberfläche her bekannt sind und in Hypertexten eingesetzt werden, zurßckgewiesen und diese Bildchen durch eine neue Generation mächtiger Graphic Link Markers ersetzt. Diese Ergebnisse werden im Kontext der Kommerzialisierung des Internet betrachtet. Neben der Identifizierung der Hauptprobleme des eCommerce aus der Perspektive der Hypertext Semiotik, widmet sich der Autor den Informationsgßtern und den derzeitigen Hindernissen fßr die New Economy, wie etwa der restriktiven Gesetzeslage in Sachen Copyright und Intellectual Property. Diese anachronistischen Beschränkungen basieren auf der problematischen Annahme, dass auch der Informationswert durch die Knappheit bestimmt wird. Eine semiotische Analyse der iMarketing Techniken, wie z.B. Banner Werbung, Keywords und Link Injektion, sowie Exkurse ßber den Browser Krieg und den Toywar runden die Dissertation ab
