    Multicast scheduling in feedback-based two-stage switch

Two limiting factors are the complexity of switch fabric and the need for a sophisticated central scheduler. In this paper, we focus on designing a scalable multicast switch. Given the fact that the majority traffic on the Internet is unicast, a cost-effective solution is to adopt a unicast switch fabric for handling both unicast and multicast traffic. Unlike existing approaches, we choose to base our multicast switch design on the load-balanced two-stage switch architecture because it does not require a central scheduler, and its unicast switch fabric only needs to realize N switch configurations. Specifically, we adopt the feedback-based two-stage switch architecture [10], because it elegantly solves the notorious packet mis-sequencing problem, and yet renders an excellent throughput-delay performance. By slightly modifying the operation of the original feedback-based two-stage switch, a simple distributed multicast scheduling algorithm is proposed. Simulation results show that with packet duplication at both input ports and middle-stage ports, the proposed multicast scheduling algorithm significantly cuts down the average packet delay and delay variation among different copies of the same multicast packet.     Design and stability analysis of high performance packet switches

    With the rapid development of optical interconnection technology, high-performance packet switches are required to resolve contentions in a fast manner to satisfy the demand for high throughput and high speed rates. Combined input-crosspoint buffered (CICB) switches are an alternative to input-buffered (IB) packet switches to provide high-performance switching and to relax arbitration timing for packet switches with high-speed ports. A maximum weight matching (MWM) scheme can provide 100% throughput under admissible traffic for lB switches. However, the high complexity of MWM prohibits its implementation in high-speed switches. In this dissertation, a feedback-based arbitration scheme for CICB switches is studied, where cell selection is based on the provided service to virtual output queues (VOQs). The feedback-based scheme is named round-robin with adaptable frame size (RR-AF) arbitration. The frame size in RR-AF is adaptably changed by the serviced and unserviced traffic. If a switch is stable, the switch provides 100% throughput. Here, it is proved that RR-AF can achieve 100% throughput under uniform admissible traffic. Switches with crosspoint buffers need to consider the transmission delays, or round-trip times to define the crosspoint buffer size. As the buffered crossbar switch can be physically located far from the input ports, actual round-trip times can be non-negligible. To support non-negligible round-trip times in a buffered crossbar switch, the crosspoint buffer size needs to be increased. To satisfy this demand, this dissertation investigates how to select the crosspoint buffer size under non-negligible round trip times and under uniform traffic. With the analysis of stability margin, the relationship between the crosspoint buffer size and round-trip time is derived. Considering that CICB switches deliver higher performance than lB switches and require no speedup, this dissertation investigates the maximum throughput performance that these switches can achieve. It is shown that CICB switches without speedup achieve 100% throughput under any admissible traffic through a fluid model. In addition, a new hybrid scheme, based on longest queue-first (as input arbitration) and longest column occupancy first (as output arbitration) is proposed, which achieves 100% throughput under uniform and non-uniform traffic patterns. In order to give a better insight of the feedback nature of arbitration scheme for CICB switches, a frame-based round-robin arbitration scheme with explicit feedback control (FRE) is introduced. FRE dynamically sets the frame size according to the input load and to the accumulation of cells in a VOQ. FRE is used as the input arbitration scheme and it is combined with RR, PRR, and FRE as output arbitration schemes. These combined schemes deliver high performance under uniform and nonuniform traffic models using a buffered crossbar with one-cell crosspoint buffers. The novelty of FRE lies in that each VOQ sets the frame size by an adjustable parameter, Δ(i,j) which indicates the degree of service needed by VOQ(i, j). This value is adjusted according to the input loading and the accumulation of cells experienced in previous service cycles. This dissertation also explores an analysis technique based on feedback control theory. This methodology is proposed to study the stability of arbitration and matching schemes for packet switches. A continuous system is used and a control model is used to emulate a queuing system. The technique is applied to a matching scheme. In addition, the study shows that the dwell time, which is defined as the time a queue receives service in a service opportunity, is a factor that affects the stability of a queuing system. This feedback control model is an alternative approach to evaluate the stability of arbitration and matching schemes

    Multistage Packet-Switching Fabrics for Data Center Networks

    Recent applications have imposed stringent requirements within the Data Center Network (DCN) switches in terms of scalability, throughput and latency. In this thesis, the architectural design of the packet-switches is tackled in different ways to enable the expansion in both the number of connected endpoints and traffic volume. A cost-effective Clos-network switch with partially buffered units is proposed and two packet scheduling algorithms are described. The first algorithm adopts many simple and distributed arbiters, while the second approach relies on a central arbiter to guarantee an ordered packet delivery. For an improved scalability, the Clos switch is build using a Network-on-Chip (NoC) fabric instead of the common crossbar units. The Clos-UDN architecture made with Input-Queued (IQ) Uni-Directional NoC modules (UDNs) simplifies the input line cards and obviates the need for the costly Virtual Output Queues (VOQs). It also avoids the need for complex, and synchronized scheduling processes, and offers speedup, load balancing, and good path diversity. Under skewed traffic, a reliable micro load-balancing contributes to boosting the overall network performance. Taking advantage of the NoC paradigm, a wrapped-around multistage switch with fully interconnected Central Modules (CMs) is proposed. The architecture operates with a congestion-aware routing algorithm that proactively distributes the traffic load across the switching modules, and enhances the switch performance under critical packet arrivals. The implementation of small on-chip buffers has been made perfectly feasible using the current technology. This motivated the implementation of a large switching architecture with an Output-Queued (OQ) NoC fabric. The design merges assets of the output queuing, and NoCs to provide high throughput, and smooth latency variations. An approximate analytical model of the switch performance is also proposed. To further exploit the potential of the NoC fabrics and their modularity features, a high capacity Clos switch with Multi-Directional NoC (MDN) modules is presented. The Clos-MDN switching architecture exhibits a more compact layout than the Clos-UDN switch. It scales better and faster in port count and traffic load. Results achieved in this thesis demonstrate the high performance, expandability and programmability features of the proposed packet-switches which makes them promising candidates for the next-generation data center networking infrastructure

    Architecture design and performance analysis of practical buffered-crossbar packet switches

    Combined input crosspoint buffered (CICB) packet switches were introduced to relax inputoutput arbitration timing and provide high throughput under admissible traffic. However, the amount of memory required in the crossbar of an N x N switch is N2x k x L, where k is the crosspoint buffer size and needs to be of size RTT in cells, L is the packet size. RTT is the round-trip time which is defined by the distance between line cards and switch fabric. When the switch size is large or RTT is not negligible, the memory amount required makes the implementation costly or infeasible for buffered crossbar switches. To reduce the required memory amount, a family of shared memory combined-input crosspoint-buffered (SMCB) packet switches, where the crosspoint buffers are shared among inputs, are introduced in this thesis. One of the proposed switches uses a memory speedup of in and dynamic memory allocation, and the other switch avoids speedup by arbitrating the access of inputs to the crosspoint buffers. These two switches reduce the required memory of the buffered crossbar by 50% or more and achieve equivalent throughput under independent and identical traffic with uniform distributions when using random selections. The proposed mSMCB switch is extended to support differentiated services and long RTT. To support P traffic classes with different priorities, CICB switches have been reported to use N2x k x L x P amount of memory to avoid blocking of high priority cells.The proposed SMCB switch with support for differentiated services requires 1/mP of the memory amount in the buffered crossbar and achieves similar throughput performance to that of a CICB switch with similar priority management, while using no speedup in the shared memory. The throughput performance of SMCB switch with crosspoint buffers shared by inputs (I-SMCB) is studied under multicast traffic. An output-based shared-memory crosspoint buffered (O-SMCB) packet switch is proposed where the crosspoint buffers are shared by two outputs and use no speedup. The proposed O-SMCB switch provides high performance under admissible uniform and nonuniform multicast traffic models while using 50% of the memory used in CICB switches. Furthermore, the O-SMCB switch provides higher throughput than the I-SMCB switch. As SMCB switches can efficiently support an RTT twice as long as that supported by CICB switches and as the performance of SMCB switches is bounded by a matching between inputs and crosspoint buffers, a new family of CICB switches with flexible access to crosspoint buffers are proposed to support longer RTTs than SMCB switches and to provide higher throughput under a wide variety of admissible traffic models. The CICB switches with flexible access allow an input to use any available crosspoint buffer at a given output. The proposed switches reduce the required crosspoint buffer size by a factor of N , keep the service of cells in sequence, and use no speedup. This new class of switches achieve higher throughput performance than CICB switches under a large variety of traffic models, while supporting long RTTs. Crosspoint buffered switches that are implemented in single chips have limited scalability. To support a large number of ports in crosspoint buffered switches, memory-memory-memory (MMM) Clos-network switches are an alternative. The MMM switches that use minimum memory amount at the central module is studied. Although, this switch can provide a moderate throughput, MMM switch may serve cells out of sequence. As keeping cells in sequence in an MMM switch may require buffers be distributed per flow, an MMM with extended memory in the switch modules is studied. To solve the out of sequence problem in MMM switches, a queuing architecture is proposed for an MMM switch. The service of cells in sequence is analyzed

    High-radix Packet-Switching Architecture for Data Center Networks

    We propose a highly scalable packet-switching architecture that suits for demanding Data center Networks (DCNs). The design falls into the category of buffered multistage switches. It affiliates a three-stage Clos-network and the Networks-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm. We also suggest a congestion-aware routing algorithm that shares the traffic load among the switch's central modules via interleaved connecting links. Unlike conventional switches, the current proposal provides better path diversity, simple scheduling, speedup and robustness to load variation. Simulation results show that the switch is scalable with the portcount and traffic fluctuation, and that it outperforms different switches under many traffic patterns

    Scheduling and reconfiguration of interconnection network switches

    Interconnection networks are important parts of modern computing systems, facilitating communication between a system\u27s components. Switches connecting various nodes of an interconnection network serve to move data in the network. The switch\u27s delay and throughput impact the overall performance of the network and thus the system. Scheduling efficient movement of data through a switch and configuring the switch to realize a schedule are the main themes of this research. We consider various interconnection network switches including (i) crossbar-based switches, (ii) circuit-switched tree switches, and (iii) fat-tree switches. For crossbar-based input-queued switches, a recent result established that logarithmic packet delay is possible. However, this result assumes that packet transmission time through the switch is no less than schedule-generation time. We prove that without this assumption (as is the case in practice) packet delay becomes linear. We also report results of simulations that bear out our result for practical switch sizes and indicate that a fast scheduling algorithm reduces not only packet delay but also buffer size. We also propose a fast mesh-of-trees based distributed switch scheduling (maximal-matching based) algorithm that has polylog complexity. A circuit-switched tree (CST) can serve as an interconnect structure for various computing architectures and models such as the self-reconfigurable gate array and the reconfigurable mesh. A CST is a tree structure with source and destination processing elements as leaves and switches as internal nodes. We design several scheduling and configuration algorithms that distributedly partition a given set of communications into non-conflicting subsets and then establish switch settings and paths on the CST corresponding to the communications. A fat-tree is another widely used interconnection structure in many of today\u27s high-performance clusters. We embed a reconfigurable mesh inside a fat-tree switch to generate efficient connections. We present an R-Mesh-based algorithm for a fat-tree switch that creates buses connecting input and output ports corresponding to various communications using that switch

    A Scalable Multi-Stage Packet-Switch for Data Center Networks

    The growing trends of data centers over last decades including social networking, cloud-based applications and storage technologies enabled many advances to take place in the networking area. Recent changes imply continuous demand for bandwidth to manage the large amount of packetized traffic. Cluster switches and routers make the switching fabric in a Data Center Network (DCN) environment and provide interconnectivity between elements of the same DC and inter DCs. To handle the constantly variable loads, switches need deliver outstanding throughput along with resiliency and scalability for DCN requirements. Conventional DCN switches adopt crossbars or/and blocks of memories mounted in a multistage fashion (commonly 2-Tiers or 3-Tiers). However, current multistage switches, with their space-memory variants, are either too complex to implement, have poor performance, or not cost effective. We propose a novel and highly scalable multistage switch based on Networkson- Chip (NoC) fabrics for DCNs. In particular, we describe a three-stage Clos packet-switch with a Round Robin packets dispatching scheme where each central stage module is based on a Unidirectional NoC (UDN), instead of the conventional singlehop crossbar. The design, referred to as Clos-UDN, overcomes shortcomings of traditional multistage architectures as it (i) Obviates the need for a complex and costly input modules, by means of few, yet simple, input FIFO queues. (ii) Avoids the need for a complex and synchronized scheduling process over a high number of input-output modules and/or port pairs. (iii) Provides speedup, load balancing and path-diversity thanks to a dynamic dispatching scheme as well as the NoC based fabric nature. Simulations show that the Clos-UDN outperforms some common multistage switches under a range of input traffics, making it highly appealing for ultra-high capacity DC networks

    Host and Network Optimizations for Performance Enhancement and Energy Efficiency in Data Center Networks

    Modern data centers host hundreds of thousands of servers to achieve economies of scale. Such a huge number of servers create challenges for the data center network (DCN) to provide proportionally large bandwidth. In addition, the deployment of virtual machines (VMs) in data centers raises the requirements for efficient resource allocation and find-grained resource sharing. Further, the large number of servers and switches in the data center consume significant amounts of energy. Even though servers become more energy efficient with various energy saving techniques, DCN still accounts for 20% to 50% of the energy consumed by the entire data center. The objective of this dissertation is to enhance DCN performance as well as its energy efficiency by conducting optimizations on both host and network sides. First, as the DCN demands huge bisection bandwidth to interconnect all the servers, we propose a parallel packet switch (PPS) architecture that directly processes variable length packets without segmentation-and-reassembly (SAR). The proposed PPS achieves large bandwidth by combining switching capacities of multiple fabrics, and it further improves the switch throughput by avoiding padding bits in SAR. Second, since certain resource demands of the VM are bursty and demonstrate stochastic nature, to satisfy both deterministic and stochastic demands in VM placement, we propose the Max-Min Multidimensional Stochastic Bin Packing (M3SBP) algorithm. M3SBP calculates an equivalent deterministic value for the stochastic demands, and maximizes the minimum resource utilization ratio of each server. Third, to provide necessary traffic isolation for VMs that share the same physical network adapter, we propose the Flow-level Bandwidth Provisioning (FBP) algorithm. By reducing the flow scheduling problem to multiple stages of packet queuing problems, FBP guarantees the provisioned bandwidth and delay performance for each flow. Finally, while DCNs are typically provisioned with full bisection bandwidth, DCN traffic demonstrates fluctuating patterns, we propose a joint host-network optimization scheme to enhance the energy efficiency of DCNs during off-peak traffic hours.
