Non-digital forms of play that allow players to direct brute force directly upon each other, such as martial arts, boxing and full contact team sports, are very popular. However, inter-player brutality has largely been unexplored as a feature of digital gaming. In this paper, we describe the design and study of 2 multi-player games that encourage players to use brute force directly against other players. Balance of Poweris a tug-of-war style game implemented with Xbox Kinect, while Bundleis a playground-inspired chasing game implemented with smartphones. Two groups of five participants(n=10) played both games while being filmed, and were subsequently interviewed. A thematic analysis identified five keycomponents ofthe brutalmultiplayer video gameexperience, which informsa set of sevendesign considerations. This work aims to inspire the design of engaging game experiences based on awareness and enjoyment of our own and others’ physicality

Counterfeits of designer merchandise continue to be made and sold throughout the world causing drastic social and economic outcomes everywhere. Despite the illegality of manufacturing and distributing counterfeit goods, this business has far-reaching effects that society is not generally aware of. The evils of counterfeiting luxury goods include forced child labor, drug trafficking, and international terrorism as well as loss of billions of dollars in revenue to legitimate businesses and governments. The ancient Latin phrase “Caveat emptor” “Let the buyer beware” is still relevant today. Being made aware and being warned, society may be motivated to shut down this illicit business of counterfeiting designer goods

    Sky Cubacub Interview

Artist Bio: Rebirth Garments are designed and made by hand by Sky Cubacub. Sky is a non-binary queer and disabled Filipinx human from Chicago, IL with life long anxiety and panic disorders. Sky first dreamed of this collection while in high school and couldn’t find a place where they could buy a chest binder as a person who was under 18, and who didn\u27t have access to a credit card to buy one online. Sky is especially interested in Rebirth Garments being accessible to queer and disabled youth and is working on creating a program for making free/reduced priced garments for people in need. In Sky’s practice, the intensive hand work makes the process the most important part and gives them inspiration. Chainmaille has been the catalyst to every other medium that they excel in; all of the mediums Sky enjoys are obsessive and have repetitive patterns. It is the slow, thoughtful process that holds value and heals Sky’s mind. Through chainmaille, Sky has found their patience. For Sky, everyday is a performance where they bring their body as a kinetic sculpture into the consciousness of the people they interact with in passing and on a daily basis. Sky embodies the spirit of Radical Visibility, and Rebirth Garments is their soft armor. Sky considers it armor because it has the power to give them the confidence and strength to feel comfortable in their first skin. Sky has been building their self this armor or protection, not against harm exactly, but as a way to give them courage. Chainmaille and Rebirth Garments are a prosthetic for the communication of Sky’s inner world. Sky’s body, Sky’s identity and Sky’s prosthesis are one cohesive being.[1] [1] Cubacub, Sky. Too Much White Space: Diversity In Graphic Design, is a community-based project that focuses on inspiring future black generations to become graphic designers. This project aims to respond to the AIGA article called Where are the Black designers?, by Maurice Cherry. In his article, he asks tough questions about the lack of racial diversity in design. He explains why the lack of diversity is a problem and how it hurts the design field. Researching this topic in-depth will help me find ways to get more minorities involved in graphic design. One day in my design career, I would like to expand this project and see if I can make an impact to raise the percentage of minorities in design

Standing Tall, the Stiletto Heel as Material Memory: A Contemporary

Employing a material culture analysis, this dissertation functions as a general compendium on the stiletto heel, as it recounts the history of the stiletto from its introduction as a technological marvel in the post-WWII period to its present-day manifestations as a glamourous accessory. It surveys womens relations to stiletto heels and the reasons why women wear, and do not wear, them. Through a comparative cross-cultural analysis, the study examines a group of Canadian and Italian womens uses and perceptions of stiletto heels, and reveals cultural distinctions manifested in their uses and interpretations of stilettos. The womens personal relations to and cultural interpretations of the stiletto were measured through a phenomenological analysis of material collected through surveys, interviews and online forums. The study also considers the general sentiments stilettos engender in regard to the portrayal of women in society and the feminist discourses that the stiletto challenges and reinforces
