Information standards to support application and enterprise interoperability for the smart grid

Copyright @ 2012 IEEE.Current changes in the European electricity industry are driven by regulatory directives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time as replacing aged infrastructure and maintaining energy security. There is a wide acceptance of the requirement for smarter grids to support such changes and accommodate variable injections from renewable energy sources. However the design templates are still emerging to manage the level of information required to meet challenges such as balancing, planning and market dynamics under this new paradigm. While secure and scalable cloud computing architectures may contribute to supporting the informatics challenges of the smart grid, this paper focuses on the essential need for business alignment with standardised information models such as the IEC Common Information Model (CIM), to leverage data value and control system interoperability. In this paper we present details of use cases being considered by National Grid, the GB transmission system operator for information interoperability in pan-network system management and planning. This study is financially supported by the National Grid, UK

Jeeva: Enterprise Grid-enabled Web Portal for Protein Secondary Structure Prediction

    Get PDF
This paper presents a Grid portal for protein secondary structure prediction developed by using services of Aneka, a .NET-based enterprise Grid technology. The portal is used by research scientists to discover new prediction structures in a parallel manner. An SVM (Support Vector Machine)-based prediction algorithm is used with 64 sample protein sequences as a case study to demonstrate the potential of enterprise Grids.Comment: 7 page

A community small-scale wind generation project in Peru

    Get PDF
Electrification systems based on renewable energy have proven to be suitable for providing decentralized electricity to isolated communities. Electricity generated through wind power is one of the technical options available, although infrequently used to date. This article aims to describe the main aspects of technical design, implementation and management of the first small-scale community wind generation project for rural electrification in Peru. This project took place in the community of El Alumbre, in the region of Cajamarca, which is a mountainous area characterized by low to medium wind speeds. This project, implemented by Soluciones Prácticas – Practical Action (Peru), brought electric power to the 33 households (a total of 150 inhabitants) as well as the school and health center of the community.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Methodological Approaches to Modeling Information Architecture of the Organization in the Conditions of Digital Economy

    Get PDF
It is significant for businesses, especially in the digital economy, the solution of theoretical and methodological justifications and the development of practical recommendations for building an organization\u27s information architecture as a holistic description of its key strategies, related to business, information, application systems and technologies, and also their impact on the functions and business processes of an organization. The article discusses issues, related to methodological approaches to modeling an organization\u27s information architectureб using information management tools to help manage innovation in information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT). The relevance of organizational provisions to determine the way, in which a business entity\u27s business model is functionally integrated with the IS architecture is substantiated. The consideration and analysis of the use of industrial standards for describing the architecture of an organization, adopted by such institutions as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), The Open Group, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), etc. reveal that none of these standards is dominant and does not provide teams, responsible for the architecture development with all the tools, necessary from the methodological point of view and from the point of view of the templates, used to describe the architecture. Recommendations are given on the theoretical and methodological substantiation and construction of the information architecture of an organization as a complete description of its key strategies related to business, information, application systems and technologies, as well as their impact on the functions and business processes of an organization
