Trendswatch 2013: Back to the Future
TrendsWatch 2013 highlights six trends that CFM's staff and advisors believe are highly significant to museums and their communities, based on our scanning and analysis over the past year. For each trend, we provide a brief summary, list examples of how the trend is playing out in the world, comment on the trend's significance to society and to museums specifically, and suggest ways that museums might respond. Museums and Digital Culture: New perspectives and research
This richly illustrated book offers new perspectives and research on how digital
culture is transforming museums in the 21st century, as they strive to keep pace
with emerging technologies driving cultural and social change, played out not only
in today’s pervasive networked environment of the Internet and Web, but in
everyday life, from home to work and on city streets. In a world where digital
culture has redefined human information behavior as life in code and digits,
increasingly it dominates human activity and communication. These developments
have radically changed the expectations of the museum visitor, real and virtual, the
work of museum professionals and, most prominently, the nature of museum
exhibitions, while digital art and life in a digitally saturated world is changing our
ways of seeing, doing, our senses and aesthetics.
Overall, this book creates a new picture of the 21st-century museum field. As
museums become shared spaces with their communities, local, national and global
and move from collection-centered to user-/visitor-centered institutions, they are
assuming new roles and responsibilities tied to new goals for engaging their
audience, conveying meaning through collections, creating learning experiences
and importantly, connecting to daily digital life and culture integral to the museum
ecosystem. Our studies of recent exhibitions at museums leading change are used to
exemplify new directions, while they point to a reimagined vision for museums
of the future at the heart of which is the integration of digital culture and visitor
experience and participation in real and virtual space

2011 Strategic roadmap for Australian research infrastructure
The 2011 Roadmap articulates the priority research infrastructure areas of a national scale (capability areas) to further develop Australia’s research capacity and improve innovation and
research outcomes over the next five to ten years. The capability areas have been identified through considered analysis of input provided by stakeholders, in conjunction with specialist advice from Expert Working Groups
It is intended the Strategic Framework will provide a high-level policy framework, which will include principles to guide the development of policy advice and the design of programs related to the funding of research infrastructure by the Australian Government. Roadmapping has been identified in the Strategic Framework Discussion Paper as the most appropriate prioritisation mechanism for national, collaborative research infrastructure. The strategic identification of Capability areas through a consultative roadmapping process was also validated in the report of the 2010 NCRIS Evaluation.
The 2011 Roadmap is primarily concerned with medium to large-scale research infrastructure. However, any landmark infrastructure (typically involving an investment in excess of $100 million over five years from the Australian Government) requirements identified in this process will be noted. NRIC has also developed a ‘Process to identify and prioritise Australian Government landmark research infrastructure investments’ which is currently under consideration by the government as part of broader deliberations relating to research infrastructure.
NRIC will have strategic oversight of the development of the 2011 Roadmap as part of its overall policy view of research infrastructure
JRC Thinkers ‘N’ Tinkers Makerspace - Concept Note
In this concept note, we make the case for creating an in-house makerspace oriented towards the engagement of citizens in technoscientific innovations: the JRC Thinkers ‘N’ Tinkers Makerspace. The idea behind the makerspace is to have a space located in the premises of the JRC that promotes critical thinking and tinkering about technoscientific issues relevant for policy files focusing on their societal implications. The development of pedagogical infrastructures in three cycles of maker-centered learning projects

The development of pedagogical infrastructures in three cycles of maker-centered learning projects, Design and Technology Education: an international Journal.The purpose of the present investigation was to analyze the pedagogical infrastructures in three cycles of seventh graders’ co-invention projects that involved using traditional and digital fabrication technologies for inventing and creating complex artefacts. The aim of the projects was to create high-end multi-material makerspaces by expanding Finnish craft classrooms with instruments of digital fabrication, such as micro-processors, wearable computing (e-textiles), and 3D design and making, for enabling creation of student-designed multi-faceted inventions. Through a qualitative meta-analysis of the three successive learning-by-making projects, we explored the kinds of pedagogical infrastructures required for fostering knowledge-creating practices of learning. Pedagogic infrastructures refer to the designed arrangements and underlying conditions of implementing an extensive study project in classroom practices needed for reaching the learning objectives. We analyzed the epistemological, scaffolding, social, and material-technological dimensions of the enacted pedagogic infrastructures. In accordance with design-based educational investigations, we collected a variety of data (classroom video recordings, teacher and tutor interviews, invention challenges, learning assignments, and working schedules) across three year-long developmental cycles. We discuss the limitations and opportunities of maker-centered learning settings as well as considerations for future development of makerspace as pedagogical innovations for integrating socio-digital and material-technical practices and spaces for learning.Peer reviewe
