A New Perspective of Translation Criticism: Descriptive Translation Studies

Descriptive translation studies (DTS) provides a new approach to translation studies which developed in the 1970s in the western world. This approach not only broadens the horizon of translation studies, but also shifts its focus to target language and target-oriented culture. This thesis, based on a general description of DTS and its developments and characteristics, chooses the article “The translation of Hong Lou Meng into English: A descriptive Study” as its model and tries to discuss how are the ways of description revealed in this article. Key words: descriptive translation studies, objects of description, ways of description Résumé: La traduction descriptive émergeant dans les années 70 du 20e siècle ouvre une nouvelle perspective pour l’étude de la traduction. Elle élargit non seulement le domaine d’étude de la traduction, mais aussi centre la recherche sur la langue et culture cible. L’article présente d’abord sommairement la théorie de la traduction descriptive, son développement et ses caractéristiques, et puis prend comme exemple l’essai intitulé « L’itinéraire inoubliable – étude descriptive sur le travail de traduction anglaise du « Rêve dans le pavillon rouge » pour examiner comment le moyen descriptif se traduit dans cet essai. The back cover of this book describes it as “a practical study guide to postgraduate and research students of applied translation studies.” This might give the impression that the volume is a textbook, which it is not. Rather, the book is a collection of nine separate articles. Their common denominator is that they are corpus-based or corpus-driven descriptive studies. Nevertheless, the contributions are so varied in approach and rich in information, that they can undoubtedly inspire other researchers in the field of descriptive translation studies

Descriptive Translation Studies’ Accountability for Translation Phenomena: A Case Study of Hong Lou Meng

This paper analyzes the different versions of Hong Lou Meng from the perspective of DTC (Descriptive Translation Studies). First, it introduces the origin of DTC and its main features. Then, it expounds how to study different English versions of Hong Lou Meng in terms of Polysystem Theory. Finally, a conclusion is drawn that it is necessary to study versions from the perspective of DTC, because it can avoid the drawbacks of the traditional source-oriented translation study and could better explain the complex translation activities. Tout d’abord, l’histoire de la traduction descriptive et ses caractéristiques sont présentées. Ensuite, l’auteur analyse les différentes viersion du Rêve dans le Pavillon rouge avec la Théorie de Polysystème. Il en conclut que l’étude descriptive de la traduction est nécessaire parce qu’elle évite la limite de l’étude traditionnelle de centrer sur le texte origignal pour arriver ainsi à mieux interpréter cette activité complexe humaine qu’est la traduction. Translating linguistic and cultural aspects in Swahili healthcare texts: a descriptive translation studies approach

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 185-194)Underpinned by the premise that any text can be studied as a translation provided it is identified as such, this study theoretically uses Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) to investigate English-Swahili healthcare texts. The aim of the study was to: identify, describe and analyse linguistic and cultural aspects in the texts; identify, describe, and analyse translation strategies used in the texts; and describe and analyse the use of illustrations in the texts. The study made use of Kruger and Wallmach’s (1997) analytical framework. The Tertium Comparationis of the study was descriptive terms, cohesive devices, translation strategies, division of texts, illustrations, text titles, and taboo words. On the linguistic aspects, the study’s main findings were: that the English texts use more descriptive terms than the Swahili texts; Swahili texts have a higher frequency use of references because it contains a number of derivational and inflectional morphemes; substitution is sparingly used whereas ellipsis is almost non-existent in Swahili texts in spite of its presence in the source texts; additive and causal conjunctions were the most prevalent in the texts; and inasmuch as there were no significant differences in the use of lexical cohesion in the ST and TT, Swahili texts were found to be more cohesive due to the slightly higher number of lexical items. Regarding the cultural aspects, it was found that translators use euphemism in the translation of words considered taboo and this informed the conclusion that there reigns the euphemism norm in Swahili texts. It equally emerged that strategies used to overcome non-lexicalisation include: use of pure loan words, use of pure loan words preceded by explanation, use of indigenised loan words, use of omission and translation by a more general word. On the other hand, translators used strategies of substitution, use of general words, paraphrasing and cultural substitution to translate words considered taboo. In addition, the study found that illustrations are used in more less the same way both in the ST and TT save for some slight modifications that are done in order to align them with the target culture expectations. Target-cultural ‘facts’ – Do they really exist?: A critical assessment of Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies

Gideon Toury pioneered Descriptive Translation Studies as a science based on observation, (re)defining translation as a target-cultural ‘fact’ and, thus, shifting the focus to the translation as a product which can and should be studied without any methodological presumptions. However, this proves illusive, as it falsely supposes neutrality in research. Arguing that there could be no strict separation between description and evaluation, I will argue that— if we are to fully understand its complex nature—translation cannot be properly viewed as an exclusively target-cultural phenomenon. An overview of some alternative concepts that allow a more balanced perspective will be given
