This volume is the first to examine the museum landscape of all post-socialist EU member states. How do museums present the Second World War, the Holocaust, and Soviet crimes? As part of their nationsâ attempts to join the EU, some "invoke" Europe, aiming to prove their Europeanness by adopting international museification trends. Others demand that "Europe" recognizes their suffering under Soviet rule as the greater evil
This paper aims to contribute to ongoing endeavors to investigate organisations by and for working migrants in Germany. It particularly focuses on the Croatian Catholic Mission in West Berlin (HKMB), intending to help further illuminating its work as well as its goals from the late 1960s until the early 1980s. Departing from the assumption that all forms of group belonging are necessarily situational and contextual, identity politics as pursued by the mission shall be scrutinized. Furthermore, the paper investigates fractions and continuities regarding their representation paying close attention to temporal and spatial aspects. The author argues that from the late 1970s onwards the HKMB increasingly sought to articulate something that will be referred to as âCroatian identity in Berlinâ. This development has to be understood against the background of both the demographic situation in Berlin as well as of concurrent efforts of the Yugoslav state to address âitsâ citizens abroad
The geometric relaxation following light absorption of the biliverdin, phycocyanobilin and phytochromobilin tetrapyrrole chromophores of bacterial, cyanobacterial and plant phytochromes has been investigated using density functional theory methods. Considering stereoisomers relevant for both red-absorbing Pr and far-red-absorbing Pfr forms of the photoreceptor, it is found that the initial excited-state evolution is dominated by torsional motion at the C10-C11 bond. This holds true for all three chromophores and irrespective of which configuration the chromophores adopt. This finding suggests that the photochromic cycling of phytochromes between their Pr and Pfr forms, which is known to be governed by Z/E photoisomerizations at the C15-C16 bond, relies on interactions between the chromophore and the protein to prevent photoisomerizations at C10-C11. Further, it is found that the uneven distribution of positive charge between the pyrrole rings is a major factor for the photochemical reactivity of the C10-C11 bond.Original Publication:Angela Strambi and Bo Durbeej, Initial excited-state relaxation of the bilin chromophores of phytochromes: a computational study, 2011, PHOTOCHEMICAL and PHOTOBIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, (10), 4, 569-579.http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/c0pp00307gCopyright: Royal Society of Chemistryhttp://www.rsc.org
This thesis studies the democratic consolidation of the Republic of Macedonia. Given the
fact that Macedonia received relatively little scientific attention compared with the other
successor states of former Yugoslavia â probably due to the facts that it seceded peacefully
from Yugoslavia and that the conflict of the year 2001 could be ended without a major
escalation of violence, as opposed to other countries in the region â the aim of this thesis is to
cover its democratic development since the year 2001.
The starting point is a theoretical model of a consolidated democracy. For this purpose the
thesis uses the model of an âembedded democracyâ developed by Merkel et al. In this model a
democracy is seen as consolidated, if the five sub-regimes it consists of are fulfilling certain
criteria. These sub-regimes are the electoral system, the political rights, the liberal civil rights,
a system of âchecks-and-balancesâ and âgoodâ governance. In order to facilitate the
understanding of Macedoniaâs situation after the independence, this chapter is followed by a
historical chapter which describes its development. This chapter shows the special situation of
independent Macedonia, being a country with no experience whatsoever as a sovereign state
and also no noteworthy experience with democracy. An additionally aggravating
circumstance is the fact that the Macedonian population is ethnically very heterogeneous,
with a quarter of the population coming from the Albanian minority and another tenth of the
population coming from other smaller minorities.
In the 1990âs, many observers saw Macedonia as a positive example of stability in the
region. This picture was shattered by the conflict in the year 2001, when people realised that
not everything was well. Since the conflict itself has been covered by a number of scientific
papers, it was not enclosed in detail in the present study. But as some of the consequences of
the conflict are highly relevant for the democratic consolidation (especially the Ohrid
Framework Agreement that has been brokered by the international community in order to stop
the violence), they are also covered here. The main part of this thesis then analyses the current
situation in the five sub-regimes. This analysis shows that in the last years Macedonia made
significant progress on its way towards democratic consolidation. Nevertheless there are still
some major problems in a number of areas that need to be fixed, before Macedonia can really
become a consolidated democracy
The present thesis is about the role of a historical character, Alija IzetbegoviÄ. The focal points are the personality of the leader Alija IzetbegoviÄ, his motives, idea-building, social, political and ideological environment and his important works. To really understand him, it is vital to know about the war in Bosnia and its causes, which was discussed later in this work.
In this thesis, different aspects of Aliya IzetbegoviÄ`s leadership quality were discussed with leadership analysis as a theoretical starting point. The focus here was the war in Bosnia which was started in 1992 and ended in 1995. Following a definition of the term "political leadership", definitions for the terms "leader" and "leadership" were looked into. Furthermore, the historical overview of research and theories was reviewed with polit-psychological thinking. At the end of the theoretical part under âLaxenburgerfragenâ, the main goal of the leadership analysis was stated
