Nevertheless, its inner workings in biological organisms, as well as its emulation by computer systems, have proven elusive, and stereo vision remains a very active and challenging area of research nowadays. In this volume we have attempted to present a limited but relevant sample of the work being carried out in stereo vision, covering significant aspects both from the applied and from the theoretical standpoints

    Locally Adaptive Stereo Vision Based 3D Visual Reconstruction

    abstract: Using stereo vision for 3D reconstruction and depth estimation has become a popular and promising research area as it has a simple setup with passive cameras and relatively efficient processing procedure. The work in this dissertation focuses on locally adaptive stereo vision methods and applications to different imaging setups and image scenes. Solder ball height and substrate coplanarity inspection is essential to the detection of potential connectivity issues in semi-conductor units. Current ball height and substrate coplanarity inspection tools are expensive and slow, which makes them difficult to use in a real-time manufacturing setting. In this dissertation, an automatic, stereo vision based, in-line ball height and coplanarity inspection method is presented. The proposed method includes an imaging setup together with a computer vision algorithm for reliable, in-line ball height measurement. The imaging setup and calibration, ball height estimation and substrate coplanarity calculation are presented with novel stereo vision methods. The results of the proposed method are evaluated in a measurement capability analysis (MCA) procedure and compared with the ground-truth obtained by an existing laser scanning tool and an existing confocal inspection tool. The proposed system outperforms existing inspection tools in terms of accuracy and stability. In a rectified stereo vision system, stereo matching methods can be categorized into global methods and local methods. Local stereo methods are more suitable for real-time processing purposes with competitive accuracy as compared with global methods. This work proposes a stereo matching method based on sparse locally adaptive cost aggregation. In order to reduce outlier disparity values that correspond to mis-matches, a novel sparse disparity subset selection method is proposed by assigning a significance status to candidate disparity values, and selecting the significant disparity values adaptively. An adaptive guided filtering method using the disparity subset for refined cost aggregation and disparity calculation is demonstrated. The proposed stereo matching algorithm is tested on the Middlebury and the KITTI stereo evaluation benchmark images. A performance analysis of the proposed method in terms of the I0 norm of the disparity subset is presented to demonstrate the achieved efficiency and accuracy.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Development of a SGM-based multi-view reconstruction framework for aerial imagery

    Advances in the technology of digital airborne camera systems allow for the observation of surfaces with sampling rates in the range of a few centimeters. In combination with novel matching approaches, which estimate depth information for virtually every pixel, surface reconstructions of impressive density and precision can be generated. Therefore, image based surface generation meanwhile is a serious alternative to LiDAR based data collection for many applications. Surface models serve as primary base for geographic products as for example map creation, production of true-ortho photos or visualization purposes within the framework of virtual globes. The goal of the presented theses is the development of a framework for the fully automatic generation of 3D surface models based on aerial images - both standard nadir as well as oblique views. This comprises several challenges. On the one hand dimensions of aerial imagery is considerable and the extend of the areas to be reconstructed can encompass whole countries. Beside scalability of methods this also requires decent processing times and efficient handling of the given hardware resources. Moreover, beside high precision requirements, a high degree of automation has to be guaranteed to limit manual interaction as much as possible. Due to the advantages of scalability, a stereo method is utilized in the presented thesis. The approach for dense stereo is based on an adapted version of the semi global matching (SGM) algorithm. Following a hierarchical approach corresponding image regions and meaningful disparity search ranges are identified. It will be verified that, dependent on undulations of the scene, time and memory demands can be reduced significantly, by up to 90% within some of the conducted tests. This enables the processing of aerial datasets on standard desktop machines in reasonable times even for large fields of depth. Stereo approaches generate disparity or depth maps, in which redundant depth information is available. To exploit this redundancy, a method for the refinement of stereo correspondences is proposed. Thereby redundant observations across stereo models are identified, checked for geometric consistency and their reprojection error is minimized. This way outliers are removed and precision of depth estimates is improved. In order to generate consistent surfaces, two algorithms for depth map fusion were developed. The first fusion strategy aims for the generation of 2.5D height models, also known as digital surface models (DSM). The proposed method improves existing methods regarding quality in areas of depth discontinuities, for example at roof edges. Utilizing benchmarks designed for the evaluation of image based DSM generation we show that the developed approaches favorably compare to state-of-the-art algorithms and that height precisions of few GSDs can be achieved. Furthermore, methods for the derivation of meshes based on DSM data are discussed. The fusion of depth maps for 3D scenes, as e.g. frequently required during evaluation of high resolution oblique aerial images in complex urban environments, demands for a different approach since scenes can in general not be represented as height fields. Moreover, depths across depth maps possess varying precision and sampling rates due to variances in image scale, errors in orientation and other effects. Within this thesis a median-based fusion methodology is proposed. By using geometry-adaptive triangulation of depth maps depth-wise normals are extracted and, along the point coordinates are filtered and fused using tree structures. The output of this method are oriented points which then can be used to generate meshes. Precision and density of the method will be evaluated using established multi-view benchmarks. Beside the capability to process close range datasets, results for large oblique airborne data sets will be presented. The report closes with a summary, discussion of limitations and perspectives regarding improvements and enhancements. The implemented algorithms are core elements of the commercial software package SURE, which is freely available for scientific purposes

    NOVEL DENSE STEREO ALGORITHMS FOR HIGH-QUALITY DEPTH ESTIMATION FROM IMAGES

    This dissertation addresses the problem of inferring scene depth information from a collection of calibrated images taken from different viewpoints via stereo matching. Although it has been heavily investigated for decades, depth from stereo remains a long-standing challenge and popular research topic for several reasons. First of all, in order to be of practical use for many real-time applications such as autonomous driving, accurate depth estimation in real-time is of great importance and one of the core challenges in stereo. Second, for applications such as 3D reconstruction and view synthesis, high-quality depth estimation is crucial to achieve photo realistic results. However, due to the matching ambiguities, accurate dense depth estimates are difficult to achieve. Last but not least, most stereo algorithms rely on identification of corresponding points among images and only work effectively when scenes are Lambertian. For non-Lambertian surfaces, the brightness constancy assumption is no longer valid. This dissertation contributes three novel stereo algorithms that are motivated by the specific requirements and limitations imposed by different applications. In addressing high speed depth estimation from images, we present a stereo algorithm that achieves high quality results while maintaining real-time performance. We introduce an adaptive aggregation step in a dynamic-programming framework. Matching costs are aggregated in the vertical direction using a computationally expensive weighting scheme based on color and distance proximity. We utilize the vector processing capability and parallelism in commodity graphics hardware to speed up this process over two orders of magnitude. In addressing high accuracy depth estimation, we present a stereo model that makes use of constraints from points with known depths - the Ground Control Points (GCPs) as referred to in stereo literature. Our formulation explicitly models the influences of GCPs in a Markov Random Field. A novel regularization prior is naturally integrated into a global inference framework in a principled way using the Bayes rule. Our probabilistic framework allows GCPs to be obtained from various modalities and provides a natural way to integrate information from various sensors. In addressing non-Lambertian reflectance, we introduce a new invariant for stereo correspondence which allows completely arbitrary scene reflectance (bidirectional reflectance distribution functions - BRDFs). This invariant can be used to formulate a rank constraint on stereo matching when the scene is observed by several lighting configurations in which only the lighting intensity varies

    Distributed Robotic Vision for Calibration, Localisation, and Mapping

    This dissertation explores distributed algorithms for calibration, localisation, and mapping in the context of a multi-robot network equipped with cameras and onboard processing, comparing against centralised alternatives where all data is transmitted to a singular external node on which processing occurs. With the rise of large-scale camera networks, and as low-cost on-board processing becomes increasingly feasible in robotics networks, distributed algorithms are becoming important for robustness and scalability. Standard solutions to multi-camera computer vision require the data from all nodes to be processed at a central node which represents a significant single point of failure and incurs infeasible communication costs. Distributed solutions solve these issues by spreading the work over the entire network, operating only on local calculations and direct communication with nearby neighbours. This research considers a framework for a distributed robotic vision platform for calibration, localisation, mapping tasks where three main stages are identified: an initialisation stage where calibration and localisation are performed in a distributed manner, a local tracking stage where visual odometry is performed without inter-robot communication, and a global mapping stage where global alignment and optimisation strategies are applied. In consideration of this framework, this research investigates how algorithms can be developed to produce fundamentally distributed solutions, designed to minimise computational complexity whilst maintaining excellent performance, and designed to operate effectively in the long term. Therefore, three primary objectives are sought aligning with these three stages

    Modélisation tridimensionnelle précise de l'environnement à l’aide des systèmes de photogrammétrie embarqués sur drones

    Abstract : Images acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can provide data with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution for three-dimensional (3D) modeling. Solutions developed for this purpose are mainly operating based on photogrammetry concepts, namely UAV-Photogrammetry Systems (UAV-PS). Such systems are used in applications where both geospatial and visual information of the environment is required. These applications include, but are not limited to, natural resource management such as precision agriculture, military and police-related services such as traffic-law enforcement, precision engineering such as infrastructure inspection, and health services such as epidemic emergency management. UAV-photogrammetry systems can be differentiated based on their spatial characteristics in terms of accuracy and resolution. That is some applications, such as precision engineering, require high-resolution and high-accuracy information of the environment (e.g. 3D modeling with less than one centimeter accuracy and resolution). In other applications, lower levels of accuracy might be sufficient, (e.g. wildlife management needing few decimeters of resolution). However, even in those applications, the specific characteristics of UAV-PSs should be well considered in the steps of both system development and application in order to yield satisfying results. In this regard, this thesis presents a comprehensive review of the applications of unmanned aerial imagery, where the objective was to determine the challenges that remote-sensing applications of UAV systems currently face. This review also allowed recognizing the specific characteristics and requirements of UAV-PSs, which are mostly ignored or not thoroughly assessed in recent studies. Accordingly, the focus of the first part of this thesis is on exploring the methodological and experimental aspects of implementing a UAV-PS. The developed system was extensively evaluated for precise modeling of an open-pit gravel mine and performing volumetric-change measurements. This application was selected for two main reasons. Firstly, this case study provided a challenging environment for 3D modeling, in terms of scale changes, terrain relief variations as well as structure and texture diversities. Secondly, open-pit-mine monitoring demands high levels of accuracy, which justifies our efforts to improve the developed UAV-PS to its maximum capacities. The hardware of the system consisted of an electric-powered helicopter, a high-resolution digital camera, and an inertial navigation system. The software of the system included the in-house programs specifically designed for camera calibration, platform calibration, system integration, onboard data acquisition, flight planning and ground control point (GCP) detection. The detailed features of the system are discussed in the thesis, and solutions are proposed in order to enhance the system and its photogrammetric outputs. The accuracy of the results was evaluated under various mapping conditions, including direct georeferencing and indirect georeferencing with different numbers, distributions and types of ground control points. Additionally, the effects of imaging configuration and network stability on modeling accuracy were assessed. The second part of this thesis concentrates on improving the techniques of sparse and dense reconstruction. The proposed solutions are alternatives to traditional aerial photogrammetry techniques, properly adapted to specific characteristics of unmanned, low-altitude imagery. Firstly, a method was developed for robust sparse matching and epipolar-geometry estimation. The main achievement of this method was its capacity to handle a very high percentage of outliers (errors among corresponding points) with remarkable computational efficiency (compared to the state-of-the-art techniques). Secondly, a block bundle adjustment (BBA) strategy was proposed based on the integration of intrinsic camera calibration parameters as pseudo-observations to Gauss-Helmert model. The principal advantage of this strategy was controlling the adverse effect of unstable imaging networks and noisy image observations on the accuracy of self-calibration. The sparse implementation of this strategy was also performed, which allowed its application to data sets containing a lot of tie points. Finally, the concepts of intrinsic curves were revisited for dense stereo matching. The proposed technique could achieve a high level of accuracy and efficiency by searching only through a small fraction of the whole disparity search space as well as internally handling occlusions and matching ambiguities. These photogrammetric solutions were extensively tested using synthetic data, close-range images and the images acquired from the gravel-pit mine. Achieving absolute 3D mapping accuracy of 11±7 mm illustrated the success of this system for high-precision modeling of the environment.Résumé : Les images acquises à l’aide d’aéronefs sans pilote (ASP) permettent de produire des données de résolutions spatiales et temporelles uniques pour la modélisation tridimensionnelle (3D). Les solutions développées pour ce secteur d’activité sont principalement basées sur des concepts de photogrammétrie et peuvent être identifiées comme des systèmes photogrammétriques embarqués sur aéronefs sans pilote (SP-ASP). Ils sont utilisés dans plusieurs applications environnementales où l’information géospatiale et visuelle est essentielle. Ces applications incluent notamment la gestion des ressources naturelles (ex. : agriculture de précision), la sécurité publique et militaire (ex. : gestion du trafic), les services d’ingénierie (ex. : inspection de bâtiments) et les services de santé publique (ex. : épidémiologie et gestion des risques). Les SP-ASP peuvent être subdivisés en catégories selon les besoins en termes de précision et de résolution. En effet, dans certains cas, tel qu’en ingénierie, l’information sur l’environnement doit être de haute précision et de haute résolution (ex. : modélisation 3D avec une précision et une résolution inférieure à un centimètre). Pour d’autres applications, tel qu’en gestion de la faune sauvage, des niveaux de précision et de résolution moindres peut être suffisants (ex. : résolution de l’ordre de quelques décimètres). Cependant, même dans ce type d’applications les caractéristiques des SP-ASP devraient être prises en considération dans le développement des systèmes et dans leur utilisation, et ce, pour atteindre les résultats visés. À cet égard, cette thèse présente une revue exhaustive des applications de l’imagerie aérienne acquise par ASP et de déterminer les challenges les plus courants. Cette étude a également permis d’établir les caractéristiques et exigences spécifiques des SP-ASP qui sont généralement ignorées ou partiellement discutées dans les études récentes. En conséquence, la première partie de cette thèse traite des aspects méthodologiques et d’expérimentation de la mise en place d’un SP-ASP. Le système développé a été évalué pour la modélisation précise d’une gravière et utilisé pour réaliser des mesures de changement volumétrique. Cette application a été retenue pour deux raisons principales. Premièrement, ce type de milieu fournit un environnement difficile pour la modélisation, et ce, en termes de changement d’échelle, de changement de relief du terrain ainsi que la grande diversité de structures et de textures. Deuxièment, le suivi de mines à ciel ouvert exige un niveau de précision élevé, ce qui justifie les efforts déployés pour mettre au point un SP-ASP de haute précision. Les composantes matérielles du système consistent en un ASP à propulsion électrique de type hélicoptère, d’une caméra numérique à haute résolution ainsi qu’une station inertielle. La composante logicielle est composée de plusieurs programmes développés particulièrement pour calibrer la caméra et la plateforme, intégrer les systèmes, enregistrer les données, planifier les paramètres de vol et détecter automatiquement les points de contrôle au sol. Les détails complets du système sont abordés dans la thèse et des solutions sont proposées afin d’améliorer le système et la qualité des données photogrammétriques produites. La précision des résultats a été évaluée sous diverses conditions de cartographie, incluant le géoréférencement direct et indirect avec un nombre, une répartition et des types de points de contrôle variés. De plus, les effets de la configuration des images et la stabilité du réseau sur la précision de la modélisation ont été évalués. La deuxième partie de la thèse porte sur l’amélioration des techniques de reconstruction éparse et dense. Les solutions proposées sont des alternatives aux techniques de photogrammétrie aérienne traditionnelle et adaptée aux caractéristiques particulières de l’imagerie acquise à basse altitude par ASP. Tout d’abord, une méthode robuste de correspondance éparse et d’estimation de la géométrie épipolaire a été développée. L’élément clé de cette méthode est sa capacité à gérer le pourcentage très élevé des valeurs aberrantes (erreurs entre les points correspondants) avec une efficacité de calcul remarquable en comparaison avec les techniques usuelles. Ensuite, une stratégie d’ajustement de bloc basée sur l’intégration de pseudoobservations du modèle Gauss-Helmert a été proposée. Le principal avantage de cette stratégie consistait à contrôler les effets négatifs du réseau d’images instable et des images bruitées sur la précision de l’autocalibration. Une implémentation éparse de cette stratégie a aussi été réalisée, ce qui a permis de traiter des jeux de données contenant des millions de points de liaison. Finalement, les concepts de courbes intrinsèques ont été revisités pour l’appariement stéréo dense. La technique proposée pourrait atteindre un haut niveau de précision et d’efficacité en recherchant uniquement dans une petite portion de l’espace de recherche des disparités ainsi qu’en traitant les occlusions et les ambigüités d’appariement. Ces solutions photogrammétriques ont été largement testées à l’aide de données synthétiques, d’images à courte portée ainsi que celles acquises sur le site de la gravière. Le système a démontré sa capacité a modélisation dense de l’environnement avec une très haute exactitude en atteignant une précision 3D absolue de l’ordre de 11±7 mm

    Scalable 3D Surface Reconstruction by Local Stochastic Fusion of Disparity Maps

    Digital three-dimensional (3D) models are of significant interest to many application fields, such as medicine, engineering, simulation, and entertainment. Manual creation of 3D models is extremely time-consuming and data acquisition, e.g., through laser sensors, is expensive. In contrast, images captured by cameras mean cheap acquisition and high availability. Significant progress in the field of computer vision already allows for automatic 3D reconstruction using images. Nevertheless, many problems still exist, particularly for big sets of large images. In addition to the complex formulation necessary to solve an ill-posed problem, one has to manage extremely large amounts of data. This thesis targets 3D surface reconstruction using image sets, especially for large-scale, but also for high-accuracy applications. To this end, a processing chain for dense scalable 3D surface reconstruction using large image sets is defined consisting of image registration, disparity estimation, disparity map fusion, and triangulation of point clouds. The main focus of this thesis lies on the fusion and filtering of disparity maps, obtained by Semi-Global Matching, to create accurate 3D point clouds. For unlimited scalability, a Divide and Conquer method is presented that allows for parallel processing of subspaces of the 3D reconstruction space. The method for fusing disparity maps employs local optimization of spatial data. By this means, it avoids complex fusion strategies when merging subspaces. Although the focus is on scalable reconstruction, a high surface quality is obtained by several extensions to state-of-the-art local optimization methods. To this end, the seminal local volumetric optimization method by Curless and Levoy (1996) is interpreted from a probabilistic perspective. From this perspective, the method is extended through Bayesian fusion of spatial measurements with Gaussian uncertainty. Additionally to the generation of an optimal surface, this probabilistic perspective allows for the estimation of surface probabilities. They are used for filtering outliers in 3D space by means of geometric consistency checks. A further improvement of the quality is obtained based on the analysis of the disparity uncertainty. To this end, Total Variation (TV)-based feature classes are defined that are highly correlated with the disparity uncertainty. The correlation function is learned from ground-truth data by means of an Expectation Maximization (EM) approach. Because of the consideration of a statistically estimated disparity error in a probabilistic framework for fusion of spatial data, this can be regarded as a stochastic fusion of disparity maps. In addition, the influence of image registration and polygonization for volumetric fusion is analyzed and used to extend the method. Finally, a multi-resolution strategy is presented that allows for the generation of surfaces from spatial data with a largely varying quality. This method extends state-of-the-art methods by considering the spatial uncertainty of 3D points from stereo data. The evaluation of several well-known and novel datasets demonstrates the potential of the scalable stochastic fusion method. The strength and the weakness of the method are discussed and direction for future research is given.Digitale dreidimensionale (3D) Modelle sind in vielen Anwendungsfeldern, wie Medizin, Ingenieurswesen, Simulation und Unterhaltung von signifikantem Interesse. Eine manuelle Erstellung von 3D-Modellen ist äußerst zeitaufwendig und die Erfassung der Daten, z.B. durch Lasersensoren, ist teuer. Kamerabilder ermöglichen hingegen preiswerte Aufnahmen und sind gut verfügbar. Der rasante Fortschritt im Forschungsfeld Computer Vision ermöglicht bereits eine automatische 3D-Rekonstruktion aus Bilddaten. Dennoch besteht weiterhin eine Vielzahl von Problemen, insbesondere bei der Verarbeitung von großen Mengen hochauflösender Bilder. Zusätzlich zur komplexen Formulierung, die zur Lösung eines schlecht gestellten Problems notwendig ist, besteht die Herausforderung darin, äußerst große Datenmengen zu verwalten. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Problem der 3D-Oberflächenrekonstruktion aus Bilddaten, insbesondere für sehr große Modelle, aber auch Anwendungen mit hohem Genauigkeitsanforderungen. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine Prozesskette zur dichten skalierbaren 3D-Oberflächenrekonstruktion für große Bildmengen definiert, bestehend aus Bildregistrierung, Disparitätsschätzung, Fusion von Disparitätskarten und Triangulation von Punktwolken. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Fusion und Filterung von durch Semi-Global Matching generierten Disparitätskarten zur Bestimmung von genauen 3D-Punktwolken. Für eine unbegrenzte Skalierbarkeit wird eine Divide and Conquer Methode vorgestellt, welche eine parallele Verarbeitung von Teilräumen des 3D-Rekonstruktionsraums ermöglicht. Die Methode zur Fusion von Disparitätskarten basiert auf lokaler Optimierung von 3D Daten. Damit kann eine komplizierte Fusionsstrategie für die Unterräume vermieden werden. Obwohl der Fokus auf der skalierbaren Rekonstruktion liegt, wird eine hohe Oberflächenqualität durch mehrere Erweiterungen von lokalen Optimierungsmodellen erzielt, die dem Stand der Forschung entsprechen. Dazu wird die wegweisende lokale volumetrische Optimierungsmethode von Curless and Levoy (1996) aus einer probabilistischen Perspektive interpretiert. Aus dieser Perspektive wird die Methode durch eine Bayes Fusion von räumlichen Messungen mit Gaußscher Unsicherheit erweitert. Zusätzlich zur Bestimmung einer optimalen Oberfläche ermöglicht diese probabilistische Fusion die Extraktion von Oberflächenwahrscheinlichkeiten. Diese werden wiederum zur Filterung von Ausreißern mittels geometrischer Konsistenzprüfungen im 3D-Raum verwendet. Eine weitere Verbesserung der Qualität wird basierend auf der Analyse der Disparitätsunsicherheit erzielt. Dazu werden Gesamtvariation-basierte Merkmalsklassen definiert, welche stark mit der Disparitätsunsicherheit korrelieren. Die Korrelationsfunktion wird aus ground-truth Daten mittels eines Expectation Maximization (EM) Ansatzes gelernt. Aufgrund der Berücksichtigung eines statistisch geschätzten Disparitätsfehlers in einem probabilistischem Grundgerüst für die Fusion von räumlichen Daten, kann dies als eine stochastische Fusion von Disparitätskarten betrachtet werden. Außerdem wird der Einfluss der Bildregistrierung und Polygonisierung auf die volumetrische Fusion analysiert und verwendet, um die Methode zu erweitern. Schließlich wird eine Multi-Resolution Strategie präsentiert, welche die Generierung von Oberflächen aus räumlichen Daten mit unterschiedlichster Qualität ermöglicht. Diese Methode erweitert Methoden, die den Stand der Forschung darstellen, durch die Berücksichtigung der räumlichen Unsicherheit von 3D-Punkten aus Stereo Daten. Die Evaluierung von mehreren bekannten und neuen Datensätzen zeigt das Potential der skalierbaren stochastischen Fusionsmethode auf. Stärken und Schwächen der Methode werden diskutiert und es wird eine Empfehlung für zukünftige Forschung gegeben
