    DEFERRED VS. IMMEDIATE MODIFICATION OF SIMULATION STATE IN A PARALLEL DISCRETE EVENT SIMULATOR USING THREADED WORKER POOLS

    The Joint Integrated Mission Model (JIMM) is a real-time legacy battlefield simulator employed in detailed analyses and virtual exercises. To leverage more processors to improve real-time execution, a worker pool of threads optimistically executes events in parallel but avoids cascading rollback by executing only one future event per simulated object. Safeguards for maintenance of simulation state are programmed explicitly and either deferred or immediate modification of state variables could be employed in case of event rollback. In the beginning of the main parallelization effort, deferred modification was used where simulation state is updated only when the event can be completed safely. However, after successful implementation, it was determined to be impractical. Later, all safeguard programming employed immediate modification where original state is restored in case of rollback. This paper discusses these techniques for parallel execution of events in JIMM from initial efforts through later code maintenance

    Prototyping parallel functional intermediate languages

    Non-strict higher-order functional programming languages are elegant, concise, mathematically sound and contain few environment-specific features, making them obvious candidates for harnessing high-performance architectures. The validity of this approach has been established by a number of experimental compilers. However, while there have been a number of important theoretical developments in the field of parallel functional programming, implementations have been slow to materialise. The myriad design choices and demands of specific architectures lead to protracted development times. Furthermore, the resulting systems tend to be monolithic entities, and are difficult to extend and test, ultimatly discouraging experimentation. The traditional solution to this problem is the use of a rapid prototyping framework. However, as each existing systems tends to prefer one specific platform and a particular way of expressing parallelism (including implicit specification) it is difficult to envisage a general purpose framework. Fortunately, most of these systems have at least one point of commonality: the use of an intermediate form. Typically, these abstract representations explicitly identify all parallel components but without the background noise of syntactic and (potentially arbitrary) implementation details. To this end, this thesis outlines a framework for rapidly prototyping such intermediate languages. Based on the traditional three-phase compiler model, the design process is driven by the development of various semantic descriptions of the language. Executable versions of the specifications help to both debug and informally validate these models. A number of case studies, covering the spectrum of modern implementations, demonstrate the utility of the framework

    The Replica Consistency Problem in Data Grids

    Fast and reliable data access is a crucial aspect in distributed computing and is often achieved using data replication techniques. In Grid architectures, data are replicated in many nodes of the Grid, and users usually access the "best" replica in terms of availability and network latency. When replicas are modifiable, a change made to one replica will break the consistency with the other replicas that, at that point, become stale. Replica synchronisation protocols exist and are applied in several distributed architectures, for example in distributed databases. Grid middleware solutions provide well established support for replicating data. Nevertheless, replicas are still considered read-only, and no support is provided to the user for updating a replica while maintaining the consistency with the other replicas. In this thesis, done in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), we study the replica consistency problem in Grid computing and propose a service, called CONStanza, that is able to synchronise both files and heterogeneous (different vendors) databases in a Grid environment. We analyse and implement a specific use case that arises in high energy Physics, where conditions databases are replicated using databases of different makes. We provide detailed performance results, and show how CONStanza can be used together with Oracle Streams to provide multitier replication of conditions databases using Oracle and MySQL databases
