A Proposal for a Three Detector Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Program in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam
A Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) physics program of three LAr-TPC detectors
located along the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab is presented. This
new SBN Program will deliver a rich and compelling physics opportunity,
including the ability to resolve a class of experimental anomalies in neutrino
physics and to perform the most sensitive search to date for sterile neutrinos
at the eV mass-scale through both appearance and disappearance oscillation
channels. Using data sets of 6.6e20 protons on target (P.O.T.) in the LAr1-ND
and ICARUS T600 detectors plus 13.2e20 P.O.T. in the MicroBooNE detector, we
estimate that a search for muon neutrino to electron neutrino appearance can be
performed with ~5 sigma sensitivity for the LSND allowed (99% C.L.) parameter
region. In this proposal for the SBN Program, we describe the physics analysis,
the conceptual design of the LAr1-ND detector, the design and refurbishment of
the T600 detector, the necessary infrastructure required to execute the
program, and a possible reconfiguration of the BNB target and horn system to
improve its performance for oscillation searches.Comment: 209 pages, 129 figure
Neutrino oscillation physics at an upgraded CNGS with large next generation liquid Argon TPC detectors
The determination of the missing element (magnitude and phase) of
the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix is possible via the detection of \numu\to\nue
oscillations at a baseline and energy given by the atmospheric
observations, corresponding to a mass squared difference . While the current optimization of the CNGS
beam provides limited sensitivity to this reaction, we discuss in this document
the physics potential of an intensity upgraded and energy re-optimized CNGS
neutrino beam coupled to an off-axis detector. We show that improvements in
sensitivity to compared to that of T2K and NoVA are possible with
a next generation large liquid Argon TPC detector located at an off-axis
position (position rather distant from LNGS, possibly at shallow depth). We
also address the possibility to discover CP-violation and disentangle the mass
hierarchy via matter effects. The considered intensity enhancement of the CERN
SPS has strong synergies with the upgrade/replacement of the elements of its
injector chain (Linac, PSB, PS) and the refurbishing of its own elements,
envisioned for an optimal and/or upgraded LHC luminosity programme.Comment: 37 pages, 20 figure
Linear Accelerator Test Facility at LNF Conceptual Design Report
Test beam and irradiation facilities are the key enabling infrastructures for
research in high energy physics (HEP) and astro-particles. In the last 11 years
the Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the DA{\Phi}NE accelerator complex in the
Frascati laboratory has gained an important role in the European
infrastructures devoted to the development and testing of particle detectors.
At the same time the BTF operation has been largely shadowed, in terms of
resources, by the running of the DA{\Phi}NE electron-positron collider. The
present proposal is aimed at improving the present performance of the facility
from two different points of view: extending the range of application for the
LINAC beam extracted to the BTF lines, in particular in the (in some sense
opposite) directions of hosting fundamental physics and providing electron
irradiation also for industrial users; extending the life of the LINAC beyond
or independently from its use as injector of the DA{\Phi}NE collider, as it is
also a key element of the electron/positron beam facility. The main lines of
these two developments can be identified as: consolidation of the LINAC
infrastructure, in order to guarantee a stable operation in the longer term;
upgrade of the LINAC energy, in order to increase the facility capability
(especially for the almost unique extracted positron beam); doubling of the BTF
beam-lines, in order to cope with the signicant increase of users due to the
much wider range of applications.Comment: 71 page

Performance improvement of remanufacturing systems operating under N-policy
This thesis deals with N-policy M/G/1 queueing remanufacturing system with general server breakdown and start-up time, where the value of returned products exponentially deteriorates since received. The server will instantly turn on the system, but the system requires a start-up period to prepare for remanufacturing when returned products in the queue reach the value of N. Otherwise, the system keeps in turn-off status. During the remanufacturing process, the machines may break down and will return back to service immediately after repairing. The procedures that will be used to achieve the target are as follows. Firstly, the expression of cost function will be derived and solved. Next, the simulation software ProModel will be used to simulate this problem. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is used on a numerical example to show the applicability of the methodology and quality of results
Energy performance assessment of HVAC systems by inspection and monitoring
The paper discusses the collection and processing of energy performance data as part of the inspection of HVAC systems, aimed at identifying technically feasible and cost-effective Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECO), as required by EPBD. Case studies developed by the HARMONAC project have shown that low-cost or no-cost ECO's - mostly related to system operation and management - can be identified with an effective system monitoring. Building Management Systems (BMS) may be a powerful tool for this task, provided their HW and SW architecture is designed with adequate attention to energy monitoring. Dedicated instrumentation - such as electricity meters and temperature loggers - may also be employed as an alternative / integration to BMS monitoring. The paper also discusses the application of data analysis tools - such as "carpet plots" and "energy signatures" - to the identification of component malfunctioning, control problems, inadequate maintenance, or system schedule optimization, and to the evaluation of achieved energy saving
Optimizing a Production System for the Refurbishment of Disk Drives
The goal of this MQP was to assist CNE Direct in their aim of increasing their monthly throughput. We conducted background research on the company’s current system, studied multiple process optimization options, and recommended ones we believed fit the company’s needs. The methods used were an axiomatic design decomposition, value stream mapping, schedule optimization, and process modeling. Our results included the detection of couplings in the production process, incompatibility of one-piece flow with the existing batch scheduling system, and finally, validation of CNE Direct’s current process model. Our ultimate conclusion is that the most effective way for CNE Direct to increase throughput is to add capacity to their existing system
Design and implementation of the new scintillation light detection system of ICARUS T600
ICARUS T600 is the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at
Fermilab(USA), which foresees three Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers along
the Booster Neutrino Beam line to search for LSND-like sterile neutrino signal.
The T600 detector underwent a significant overhauling process at CERN,
introducing new technological developments while maintaining the already
achieved performances. The realization of a new liquid argon scintillation
light detection system is a primary task of the detector overhaul. As the
detector will be subject to a huge flux of cosmic rays, the light detection
system should allow the 3D reconstruction of events contributing to the
identification of neutrino interactions in the beam spill gate. The design and
implementationof the new scintillation light detection system of ICARUS T600 is
described
Feasibility study of an Integrated Program for Aerospace-vehicle Design (IPAD) system. Volume 6: Implementation schedule, development costs, operational costs, benefit assessment, impact on company organization, spin-off assessment, phase 1, tasks 3 to 8
A baseline implementation plan, including alternative implementation approaches for critical software elements and variants to the plan, was developed. The basic philosophy was aimed at: (1) a progressive release of capability for three major computing systems, (2) an end product that was a working tool, (3) giving participation to industry, government agencies, and universities, and (4) emphasizing the development of critical elements of the IPAD framework software. The results of these tasks indicate an IPAD first release capability 45 months after go-ahead, a five year total implementation schedule, and a total developmental cost of 2027 man-months and 1074 computer hours. Several areas of operational cost increases were identified mainly due to the impact of additional equipment needed and additional computer overhead. The benefits of an IPAD system were related mainly to potential savings in engineering man-hours, reduction of design-cycle calendar time, and indirect upgrading of product quality and performance
