On Development of 100-Gram-Class Spacecraft for Swarm Applications
A novel space system architecture is proposed, which would enable 100-g-class spacecraft to be flown as swarms (100 s-1000 s) in low Earth orbit. Swarms of Silicon Wafer Integrated Femtosatellites (SWIFT) present a paradigm-shifting approach to distributed spacecraft development, missions, and applications. Potential applications of SWIFT swarms include sparse aperture arrays and distributed sensor networks. New swarm array configurations are introduced and shown to achieve the effective sparse aperture driven from optical performance metrics. A system cost analysis based on this comparison justifies deploying a large number of femtosatellites for sparse aperture applications. Moreover, this paper discusses promising guidance, control, and navigation methods for swarms of femtosatellites equipped with modest sensing and control capabilities
Sensor Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems
Modern society faces serious problems with transportation systems, including but not limited to traffic congestion, safety, and pollution. Information communication technologies have gained increasing attention and importance in modern transportation systems. Automotive manufacturers are developing in-vehicle sensors and their applications in different areas including safety, traffic management, and infotainment. Government institutions are implementing roadside infrastructures such as cameras and sensors to collect data about environmental and traffic conditions. By seamlessly integrating vehicles and sensing devices, their sensing and communication capabilities can be leveraged to achieve smart and intelligent transportation systems. We discuss how sensor technology can be integrated with the transportation infrastructure to achieve a sustainable Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and how safety, traffic control and infotainment applications can benefit from multiple sensors deployed in different elements of an ITS. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed to enable a fully operational and cooperative ITS environment
Target localization in MIMO radar systems
MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar systems employ multiple antennas to transmit multiple waveforms and engage in joint processing of the received echoes from the target. MIMO radar has been receiving increasing attention in recent years from researchers, practitioners, and funding agencies. Elements of MIMO radar have the ability to transmit diverse waveforms ranging from independent to fully correlated. MIMO radar offers a new paradigm for signal processing research. In this dissertation, target localization accuracy performance, attainable by the use of MIMO radar systems, configured with multiple transmit and receive sensors, widely distributed over an area, are studied. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for target localization accuracy is developed for both coherent and noncoherent processing. The CRLB is shown to be inversely proportional to the signal effective bandwidth in the noncoherent case, but is approximately inversely proportional to the carrier frequency in the coherent case. It is shown that optimization over the sensors\u27 positions lowers the CRLB by a factor equal to the product of the number of transmitting and receiving sensors. The best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) is derived for the MIMO target localization problem. The BLUE\u27s utility is in providing a closed-form localization estimate that facilitates the analysis of the relations between sensors locations, target location, and localization accuracy. Geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) contours are used to map the relative performance accuracy for a given layout of radars over a given geographic area. Coherent processing advantage for target localization relies on time and phase synchronization between transmitting and receiving radars. An analysis of the sensitivity of the localization performance with respect to the variance of phase synchronization error is provided by deriving the hybrid CRLB. The single target case is extended to the evaluation of multiple target localization performance. Thus far, the analysis assumes a stationary target. Study of moving target tracking capabilities is offered through the use of the Bayesian CRLB for the estimation of both target location and velocity. Centralized and decentralized tracking algorithms, inherit to distributed MIMO radar architecture, are proposed and evaluated. It is shown that communication requirements and processing load may be reduced at a relatively low performance cost
Passive detection of correlated subspace signals in two MIMO channels
In this paper, we consider a two-channel multiple-input multiple-output passive detection problem, in which there is a surveillance array and a reference array. The reference array is known to carry a linear combination of broadband noise and a subspace signal of known dimension, but unknown basis. The question is whether the surveillance channel carries a linear combination of broadband noise and a subspace signal of the same dimension, but unknown basis, which is correlated with the subspace signal in the reference channel. We consider a second-order detection problem where these subspace signals are structured by an unknown, but common, p-dimensional random vector of symbols transmitted from sources of opportunity, and then received through unknown M Ă— p matrices at each of the M-element arrays. The noises in each channel have spatial correlation models ranging from arbitrarily correlated to independent with identical variances. We provide a unified framework to derive the generalized likelihood ratio test for these different noise models. In the most general case of arbitrary noise covariance matrices, the test statistic is a monotone function of canonical correlations between the reference and surveillance channels.I. Passive MIMO Radar Detection
Passive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is a sensor network comprised of multiple distributed receivers that detects and localizes targets using the emissions from multiple non-cooperative radio frequency transmitters. This dissertation advances the theory of centralized passive MIMO radar (PMR) detection by proposing two novel generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detectors. The first addresses detection in PMR networks without direct-path signals. The second addresses detection in PMR networks with direct-path signals. The probability distributions of both test statistics are investigated using recent results from random matrix theory. Equivalence is established between PMR networks without direct-path signals and passive source localization (PSL) networks. Comparison of both detectors with a centralized GLRT for active MIMO radar (AMR) detection reveals that PMR may be interpreted as the link between AMR and PSL sensor networks. In particular, under high direct-path-to-noise ratio (DNR) conditions, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity approaches that of AMR. Under low-DNR conditions, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity approaches that of PSL. At intermediate DNRs, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity smoothly varies between that of AMR and PSL. In this way, PMR unifies PSL and AMR within a common theoretical framework. This result provides insight into the fundamental natures of active and passive distributed sensing
A comparison of processing approaches for distributed radar sensing
Radar networks received increasing attention in recent years as they can outperform
single monostatic or bistatic systems. Further attention is being dedicated
to these systems as an application of the MIMO concept, well know
in communications for increasing the capacity of the channel and improving
the overall quality of the connection. However, it is here shown that radar
network can take advantage not only from the angular diversity in observing
the target, but also from a variety of ways of processing the received signals. The
number of devices comprising the network has also been taken into the analysis.
Detection and false alarm are evaluated in noise only and clutter from a theoretical
and simulated point of view. Particular attention is dedicated to the statistics
behind the processing. Experiments have been performed to evaluate practical
applications of the proposed processing approaches and to validate assumptions
made in the theoretical analysis. In particular, the radar network used for
gathering real data is made up of two transmitters and three receivers. More than
two transmitters are well known to generate mutual interference and therefore
require additional e�fforts to mitigate the system self-interference. However,
this allowed studying aspects of multistatic clutter, such as correlation, which
represent a first and novel insight in this topic. Moreover, two approaches for
localizing targets have been developed. Whilst the first is a graphic approach, the
second is hybrid numerical (partially decentralized, partially centralized) which
is clearly shown to improve dramatically the single radar accuracy. Finally the
e�ects of exchanging angular with frequency diversity are shown as well in some
particular cases. This led to develop the Frequency MIMO and the Frequency
Diverse Array, according to the separation of two consecutive frequencies. The
latter is a brand new topic in technical literature, which is attracting the interest
of the technical community because of its potential to generate range-dependant
patterns. Both the latter systems can be used in radar-designing to improve the
agility and the effciency of the radar
Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) system definition study
An executive summary of a study on the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) was presented. It was concluded that the overall costs of space systems could be reduced significantly by the development of a modular shuttle compatible standard spacecraft, and the use of that spacecraft with the Shuttle Transportation System. It was also demonstrated that the development of the standard spacecraft is feasible, desirable, and cost effective if applied to a series of missions. The ability to initially retrieve, refurbish, and reuse the spacecraft and its payload, and ultimately to perform in-orbit servicing, would result in significant cost savings. A number of specific conclusions and recommendations were also suggested
A Survey of Beam Management for mmWave and THz Communications Towards 6G
Communication in millimeter wave (mmWave) and even terahertz (THz) frequency
bands is ushering in a new era of wireless communications. Beam management,
namely initial access and beam tracking, has been recognized as an essential
technique to ensure robust mmWave/THz communications, especially for mobile
scenarios. However, narrow beams at higher carrier frequency lead to huge beam
measurement overhead, which has a negative impact on beam acquisition and
tracking. In addition, the beam management process is further complicated by
the fluctuation of mmWave/THz channels, the random movement patterns of users,
and the dynamic changes in the environment. For mmWave and THz communications
toward 6G, we have witnessed a substantial increase in research and industrial
attention on artificial intelligence (AI), reconfigurable intelligent surface
(RIS), and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The introduction of
these enabling technologies presents both open opportunities and unique
challenges for beam management. In this paper, we present a comprehensive
survey on mmWave and THz beam management. Further, we give some insights on

Collaborative Trajectory Planning and Resource Allocation for Multi-Target Tracking in Airborne Radar Networks under Spectral Coexistence
This paper develops a collaborative trajectory planning and resource allocation (CTPRA) strategy for multi-target tracking (MTT) in a spectral coexistence environment utilizing airborne radar networks. The key mechanism of the proposed strategy is to jointly design the flight trajectory and optimize the radar assignment, transmit power, dwell time, and signal effective bandwidth allocation of multiple airborne radars, aiming to enhance the MTT performance under the constraints of the tolerable threshold of interference energy, platform kinematic limitations, and given illumination resource budgets. The closed-form expression for the Bayesian Cramér–Rao lower bound (BCRLB) under the consideration of spectral coexistence is calculated and adopted as the optimization criterion of the CTPRA strategy. It is shown that the formulated CTPRA problem is a mixed-integer programming, non-linear, non-convex optimization model owing to its highly coupled Boolean and continuous parameters. By incorporating semi-definite programming (SDP), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the cyclic minimization technique, an iterative four-stage solution methodology is proposed to tackle the formulated optimization problem efficiently. The numerical results validate the effectiveness and the MTT performance improvement of the proposed CTPRA strategy in comparison with other benchmarks
