    The HdpH DSLs for scalable reliable computation

    The statelessness of functional computations facilitates both parallelism and fault recovery. Faults and non-uniform communication topologies are key challenges for emergent large scale parallel architectures. We report on HdpH and HdpH-RS, a pair of Haskell DSLs designed to address these challenges for irregular task-parallel computations on large distributed-memory architectures. Both DSLs share an API combining explicit task placement with sophisticated work stealing. HdpH focuses on scalability by making placement and stealing topology aware whereas HdpH-RS delivers reliability by means of fault tolerant work stealing. We present operational semantics for both DSLs and investigate conditions for semantic equivalence of HdpH and HdpH-RS programs, that is, conditions under which topology awareness can be transparently traded for fault tolerance. We detail how the DSL implementations realise topology awareness and fault tolerance. We report an initial evaluation of scalability and fault tolerance on a 256-core cluster and on up to 32K cores of an HPC platform

    A taxonomy of task-based parallel programming technologies for high-performance computing

    Task-based programming models for shared memory -- such as Cilk Plus and OpenMP 3 -- are well established and documented. However, with the increase in parallel, many-core and heterogeneous systems, a number of research-driven projects have developed more diversified task-based support, employing various programming and runtime features. Unfortunately, despite the fact that dozens of different task-based systems exist today and are actively used for parallel and high-performance computing (HPC), no comprehensive overview or classification of task-based technologies for HPC exists. In this paper, we provide an initial task-focused taxonomy for HPC technologies, which covers both programming interfaces and runtime mechanisms. We demonstrate the usefulness of our taxonomy by classifying state-of-the-art task-based environments in use today

    Kompics: a message-passing component model for building distributed systems

    The Kompics component model and programming framework was designedto simplify the development of increasingly complex distributed systems. Systems built with Kompics leverage multi-core machines out of the box and they can be dynamically reconfigured to support hot software upgrades. A simulation framework enables deterministic debugging and reproducible performance evaluation of unmodified Kompics distributed systems. We describe the component model and show how to program and compose event-based distributed systems. We present the architectural patterns and abstractions that Kompics facilitates and we highlight a case study of a complex distributed middleware that we have built with Kompics. We show how our approach enables systematic development and evaluation of large-scale and dynamic distributed systems

    Parallel Processes in HPX: Designing an Infrastructure for Adaptive Resource Management

    Advancement in cutting edge technologies have enabled better energy efficiency as well as scaling computational power for the latest High Performance Computing(HPC) systems. However, complexity, due to hybrid architectures as well as emerging classes of applications, have shown poor computational scalability using conventional execution models. Thus alternative means of computation, that addresses the bottlenecks in computation, is warranted. More precisely, dynamic adaptive resource management feature, both from systems as well as application\u27s perspective, is essential for better computational scalability and efficiency. This research presents and expands the notion of Parallel Processes as a placeholder for procedure definitions, targeted at one or more synchronous domains, meta data for computation and resource management as well as infrastructure for dynamic policy deployment. In addition to this, the research presents additional guidelines for a framework for resource management in HPX runtime system. Further, this research also lists design principles for scalability of Active Global Address Space (AGAS), a necessary feature for Parallel Processes. Also, to verify the usefulness of Parallel Processes, a preliminary performance evaluation of different task scheduling policies is carried out using two different applications. The applications used are: Unbalanced Tree Search, a reference dynamic graph application, implemented by this research in HPX and MiniGhost, a reference stencil based application using bulk synchronous parallel model. The results show that different scheduling policies provide better performance for different classes of applications; and for the same application class, in certain instances, one policy fared better than the others, while vice versa in other instances, hence supporting the hypothesis of the need of dynamic adaptive resource management infrastructure, for deploying different policies and task granularities, for scalable distributed computing

    Redundant dataflow applications on clustered manycore architectures

    Increasing performance requirements in the embedded systems domain have encouraged a drift from singlecore to multicore processors. Cars are an example for complex embedded systems in which the use of multicores continues to grow. The requirements of software components running in modern cars are diverse. On the one hand there are safety-critical tasks like the airbag control, on the other hand tasks which do not have any safety-related requirements at all, for example those controlling the infotainment system. Trends like autonomous driving lead to tasks which are simultaneously safety-critical and computationally complex. To satisfy the requirements of modern embedded applications we developed a dataflow-based runtime environment (RTE) for clustered manycore architectures. The RTE is able to execute dataflow graphs in various redundancy configurations and with different schedulers. We implemented our RTE design on the Kalray Bostan Massively Parallel Processor Array and evaluated all possible configurations for three common computation tasks. To classify the performance of our RTE, we compared the non-redundant graph executions with OpenCL versions of the three applications. The results show that our RTE can come close or even surpass Kalray's OpenCL framework, although maximum performance was not the primary goal of our design

    Parallel programming systems for scalable scientific computing

    High-performance computing (HPC) systems are more powerful than ever before. However, this rise in performance brings with it greater complexity, presenting significant challenges for researchers who wish to use these systems for their scientific work. This dissertation explores the development of scalable programming solutions for scientific computing. These solutions aim to be effective across a diverse range of computing platforms, from personal desktops to advanced supercomputers.To better understand HPC systems, this dissertation begins with a literature review on exascale supercomputers, massive systems capable of performing 10¹⁸ floating-point operations per second. This review combines both manual and data-driven analyses, revealing that while traditional challenges of exascale computing have largely been addressed, issues like software complexity and data volume remain. Additionally, the dissertation introduces the open-source software tool (called LitStudy) developed for this research.Next, this dissertation introduces two novel programming systems. The first system (called Rocket) is designed to scale all-versus-all algorithms to massive datasets. It features a multi-level software-based cache, a divide-and-conquer approach, hierarchical work-stealing, and asynchronous processing to maximize data reuse, exploit data locality, dynamically balance workloads, and optimize resource utilization. The second system (called Lightning) aims to scale existing single-GPU kernel functions across multiple GPUs, even on different nodes, with minimal code adjustments. Results across eight benchmarks on up to 32 GPUs show excellent scalability.The dissertation concludes by proposing a set of design principles for developing parallel programming systems for scalable scientific computing. These principles, based on lessons from this PhD research, represent significant steps forward in enabling researchers to efficiently utilize HPC systems

    MapReduce is Good Enough? If All You Have is a Hammer, Throw Away Everything That's Not a Nail!

    Hadoop is currently the large-scale data analysis "hammer" of choice, but there exist classes of algorithms that aren't "nails", in the sense that they are not particularly amenable to the MapReduce programming model. To address this, researchers have proposed MapReduce extensions or alternative programming models in which these algorithms can be elegantly expressed. This essay espouses a very different position: that MapReduce is "good enough", and that instead of trying to invent screwdrivers, we should simply get rid of everything that's not a nail. To be more specific, much discussion in the literature surrounds the fact that iterative algorithms are a poor fit for MapReduce: the simple solution is to find alternative non-iterative algorithms that solve the same problem. This essay captures my personal experiences as an academic researcher as well as a software engineer in a "real-world" production analytics environment. From this combined perspective I reflect on the current state and future of "big data" research
