    Medical System Concept of Operations for Mars Exploration Mission-11: Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC) Element - Human Research Program

    NASAs exploration missions to Mars will have durations of 2-3 years and will take humans farther away from Earth than ever before. This will result in a paradigm shift for mission planning, spacecraft design, human systems integration, and in-flight medical care. Constraints on real-time communication, resupply, and medical evacuation are major architectural drivers. These constraints require medical system development to be tightly integrated with mission and vehicle design to provide crew autonomy and enable mission success. This concept of operations provides a common vision of medical care for developing a medical system for Mars exploration missions. It documents an overview of the stakeholder needs and goals of a medical system and provides examples of the types of activities the system will be used for during the mission. Development of the concept of operations considers mission variables such as distance from Earth, duration of mission, time to definitive medical care, communication protocols between crewmembers and ground support, personnel capabilities and skill sets, medical hardware and software, and medical data management. The information provided in this document informs the ExMC Systems Engineering effort to define the functions to be provided by the medical system. In addition, this concept of operations will inform the subsequent systems engineering process of developing technical requirements, system architectures, interfaces, and verification and validation approaches for the medical system. This document supports the closure of ExMC Gap Med01: We do not have a concept of operations for medical care during exploration missions, corresponding to the ExMC-managed human system risk: Risk of Adverse Health Outcomes & Decrements in Performance due to Inflight Medical Conditions. This document is applicable to the ExMC Element Systems Engineering process and may be used for collaboration within the Human Research Program

    Recommendation for a Medical System Concept of Operations for Gateway Missions

    NASAs exploration missions to cis-lunar space will establish a permanent gateway to future transport missions to Mars. These missions mandate a significant paradigm change for mission planning, spacecraft design, human systems integration, and in-flight medical care due to constraints on mass, volume, power, resupply, and medical evacuation capability. These constraints require medical system development to be tightly integrated with mission and habitat design to provide a sufficient medical infrastructure and enable mission success. This concept of operations provides a vision of medical care needs that will be used to guide the development of a medical system for the cis-lunar Gateway Habitat. This medical system will serve as the precursor to what is implemented in future exploration missions to Mars. This concept of operations documents an overview of the stakeholder needs and system goals of a medical system and provides examples of the types of activities for which the system will be used during the mission. This concept of operations informs the ExMC systems engineering effort to define the Gateway Habitat Medical System by documenting the medical activities and capabilities relevant to Gateway missions, as identified by the ExMC clinician community. In addition, this concept of operations will inform the subsequent systems engineering process of developing technical requirements, system architectures, interfaces, and verification and validation approaches for the medical system.     Applying discursive approaches to health psychology

    Objective: The aim of this paper is to outline the contribution of two strands of discursive research, glossed as ‘macro’ and ‘micro’, to the field of health psychology. A further goal is to highlight some contemporary debates in methodology associated with the use of interview data versus more naturalistic data in qualitative health research. Method: Discursive psychology is a way of analysing talk as a social practice which considers how descriptions are put together and what actions they achieve. Results: A selection of recent examples of discursive research from one applied area of health psychology, studies of diet and obesity, are drawn upon in order to illustrate the specifics of both strands. Whilst both approaches focus on accountability, ‘macro’ discourse work is most useful for identifying the cultural context of talk and can demonstrate how individuals are positioned within such discourses, and examine how such discourses are negotiated and resisted. ‘Micro’ discursive research pays closer attention to the sequential organisation of constructions and focuses on naturalistic settings which allow for the inclusion of an analysis of the health professional. Conclusion: Diets are typically depicted as an individual responsibility in mainstream health psychology but discursive research highlights how discourses are collectively produced and bound up with social practices

    Physical activity, sport and transnational migrant spaces in Shanghai, China: (Re)crafting contours of a metropolitan cityscape

    This study examines associations between sport/physical activity space, community formation and social life among Shanghai’s highly skilled migrant demographic. There is limited illustration of the roles sport and physical exercise provision and spaces play in this migrant cohort’s lives, community formation and participation in their host societies. Yet, such evidence is of value in determining social policy, urban development and community engagement initiatives. Using a mixed-methods approach involving public policy critique, cultural and spatial analysis and virtual community investigation, this article provides a conceptual exploration of ways sport and physical activity frame individual and collective migrant experiences, and how such experiences enmesh with wider geo-spatial, political and domestic context. Amid Shanghai’s presentation as a globally attractive space, we reveal some of the complexities of the cityscape as an emblematic location for highly mobile, highly skilled migrants. A confluence of ideals about urban citizenship, social participation and localised physical activity/sport-based (inter)action, we note, articulate Shanghai anew, and contribute to debates on highly skilled transnational mobility and community formation

    Wearable Computing for Health and Fitness: Exploring the Relationship between Data and Human Behaviour

    Health and fitness wearable technology has recently advanced, making it easier for an individual to monitor their behaviours. Previously self generated data interacts with the user to motivate positive behaviour change, but issues arise when relating this to long term mention of wearable devices. Previous studies within this area are discussed. We also consider a new approach where data is used to support instead of motivate, through monitoring and logging to encourage reflection. Based on issues highlighted, we then make recommendations on the direction in which future work could be most beneficial

    Contextual Sensitivity in Grounded Theory: The Role of Pilot Studies

    Grounded Theory is an established methodological approach for context specific inductive theory building. The grounded nature of the methodology refers to these specific contexts from which emergent propositions are drawn. Thus, any grounded theory study requires not only theoretical sensitivity, but also a good insight on how to design the research in the human activity systems to be studied. The lack of this insight may result in inefficient theoretical sampling or even erroneous purposeful sampling. These problems would not necessarily be critical, as it could be argued that through the elliptical process that characterizes grounded theory, remedial loops would always bring the researcher to the core of the theory. However, these elliptical remedial processes can take very long periods of time and result in catastrophic delays in research projects. As a strategy, this paper discusses, contrasts and compares the use of pilot studies in four different grounded theory projects. Each pilot brought different insights about the context, resulting in changes of focus, guidance to improve data collection instruments and informing theoretical sampling. Additionally, as all four projects were undertaken by researchers with little experience of inductive approaches in general and grounded theory in particular, the pilot studies also served the purpose of training in interviewing, relating to interviewees, memoing, constant comparison and coding. This last outcome of the pilot study was actually not planned initially, but revealed itself to be a crucial success factor in the running of the projects. The paper concludes with a theoretical proposition for the concept of contextual sensitivity and for the inclusion of the pilot study in grounded theory research designs

    Tracking in the wild: exploring the everyday use of physical activity trackers

    As the rates of chronical diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes continue to increase, the development of tools that support people in achieving healthier habits is becoming ever more important. Personal tracking systems, such as activity trackers, have emerged as a promising class of tools to support people in managing their everyday health. However, for this promise to be fulfilled, these systems need to be well designed, not only in terms of how they implement specific behavior change techniques, but also in how they integrate into people’s daily lives and address their daily needs. My dissertations provides evidence that accounting for people’s daily practices and needs can help to design activity tracking systems that help people get more value from their tracking practices. To understand how people derive value from their activity tracking practices, I have conducted two inquiries into people’s daily uses of activity tracking systems. In a fist attempt, I led a 10-month study of the adoption of Habito, our own activity tracking mobile app. Habito logged not only users’ physical activity, but also their interactions with the app. This data was used to acquire an estimate of the adoption rate of Habito, and understanding of how adoption is affected by users’ ‘readiness’, i.e., their attitude towards behavior change. In a follow-up study, I turned to the use of video methods and direct, in-situ observations of users’ interactions to understand what motivates people to engage with these tools in their everyday life, and how the surrounding environment shapes their use. These studies revealed some of the complexities of tracking, while extending some of the underlying ideas of behavior change. Among key results: (1) people’s use of activity trackers was found to be predominantly impulsive, where they simultaneously reflect, learn and change their behaviors as they collect data; (2) people’s use of trackers is deeply entangled with their daily routines and practices, and; (3) people use of trackers often is not in line with the traditional vision of these tools as mediators of change – trackers are also commonly used to simply learn about behaviors and engage in moments of self-discovery. Examining how to design activity tracking interfaces that best support people’s different needs , my dissertation further describes an inquiry into the design space of behavioral feedback interfaces. Through a iterative process of synthesis and analysis of research on activity tracking, I devise six design qualities for creating feedback that supports people in their interactions with physical activity data. Through the development and field deployment of four concepts in a field study, I show the potential of these displays for highlighting opportunities for action and learning.À medida que a prevalência de doenças crónicas como a obesidade, doenças cardiovasculares e diabetes continua a aumentar, o desenvolvimento de ferramentas que suportam pessoas a atingir mudanças de comportamento tem-se tornado essencial. Ferramentas de monitorização de comportamentos, tais como monitores de atividade física, têm surgido com a promessa de encorajar um dia a dia mais saudável. Contudo, para que essa promessa seja cumprida, torna-se essencial que estas ferramentas sejam bem concebidas, não só na forma como implementam determinadas estratégias de mudança de comportamento, mas também na forma como são integradas no dia-a-dia das pessoas. A minha dissertação demonstra a importância de considerar as necessidades e práticas diárias dos utilizadores destas ferramentas, de forma a ajudá-las a tirar melhor proveito da sua monitorização de atividade física. De modo a entender como é que os utilizadores destas ferramentas derivam valor das suas práticas de monitorização, a minha dissertação começa por explorar as práticas diárias associadas ao uso de monitores de atividade física. A minha dissertação contribui com duas investigações ao uso diário destas ferramentas. Primeiro, é apresentada uma investigação da adoção de Habito, uma aplicação para monitorização de atividade física. Habito não só registou as instâncias de atividade física dos seus utilizadores, mas também as suas interações com a própria aplicação. Estes dados foram utilizados para adquirir uma taxa de adopção de Habito e entender como é que essa adopção é afetada pela “prontidão” dos utilizadores, i.e., a sua atitude em relação à mudança de comportamento. Num segundo estudo, recorrendo a métodos de vídeo e observações diretas e in-situ da utilização de monitores de atividade física, explorei as motivações associadas ao uso diário destas ferramentas. Estes estudos expandiram algumas das ideias subjacentes ao uso das ferramentas para mudanças de comportamento. Entre resultados principais: (1) o uso de monitores de atividade física é predominantemente impulsivo, onde pessoas refletem, aprendem e alteram os seus comportamentos à medida que recolhem dados sobe estes mesmos comportamentos; (2) o uso de monitores de atividade física está profundamente interligado com as rotinas e práticas dos seus utilizadores, e; (3) o uso de monitores de atividade física nem sempre está ligado a mudanças de comportamento – estas ferramentas também são utilizadas para divertimento e aprendizagem. A minha dissertação contribui ainda com uma exploração do design de interfaces para a monitorização de atividade física. Através de um processo iterativo de síntese e análise de literatura, seis qualidades para a criação de interfaces são derivadas. Através de um estudo de campo, a minha dissertação demonstro o potencial dessas interfaces para ajudar pessoas a aprender e gerir a sua saúde diária

    Artificial Intelligence for Small Satellites Mission Autonomy

    Space mission engineering has always been recognized as a very challenging and innovative branch of engineering: since the beginning of the space race, numerous milestones, key successes and failures, improvements, and connections with other engineering domains have been reached. Despite its relative young age, space engineering discipline has not gone through homogeneous times: alternation of leading nations, shifts in public and private interests, allocations of resources to different domains and goals are all examples of an intrinsic dynamism that characterized this discipline. The dynamism is even more striking in the last two decades, in which several factors contributed to the fervour of this period. Two of the most important ones were certainly the increased presence and push of the commercial and private sector and the overall intent of reducing the size of the spacecraft while maintaining comparable level of performances. A key example of the second driver is the introduction, in 1999, of a new category of space systems called CubeSats. Envisioned and designed to ease the access to space for universities, by standardizing the development of the spacecraft and by ensuring high probabilities of acceptance as piggyback customers in launches, the standard was quickly adopted not only by universities, but also by agencies and private companies. CubeSats turned out to be a disruptive innovation, and the space mission ecosystem was deeply changed by this. New mission concepts and architectures are being developed: CubeSats are now considered as secondary payloads of bigger missions, constellations are being deployed in Low Earth Orbit to perform observation missions to a performance level considered to be only achievable by traditional, fully-sized spacecraft. CubeSats, and more in general the small satellites technology, had to overcome important challenges in the last few years that were constraining and reducing the diffusion and adoption potential of smaller spacecraft for scientific and technology demonstration missions. Among these challenges were: the miniaturization of propulsion technologies, to enable concepts such as Rendezvous and Docking, or interplanetary missions; the improvement of telecommunication state of the art for small satellites, to enable the downlink to Earth of all the data acquired during the mission; and the miniaturization of scientific instruments, to be able to exploit CubeSats in more meaningful, scientific, ways. With the size reduction and with the consolidation of the technology, many aspects of a space mission are reduced in consequence: among these, costs, development and launch times can be cited. An important aspect that has not been demonstrated to scale accordingly is operations: even for small satellite missions, human operators and performant ground control centres are needed. In addition, with the possibility of having constellations or interplanetary distributed missions, a redesign of how operations are management is required, to cope with the innovation in space mission architectures. The present work has been carried out to address the issue of operations for small satellite missions. The thesis presents a research, carried out in several institutions (Politecnico di Torino, MIT, NASA JPL), aimed at improving the autonomy level of space missions, and in particular of small satellites. The key technology exploited in the research is Artificial Intelligence, a computer science branch that has gained extreme interest in research disciplines such as medicine, security, image recognition and language processing, and is currently making its way in space engineering as well. The thesis focuses on three topics, and three related applications have been developed and are here presented: autonomous operations by means of event detection algorithms, intelligent failure detection on small satellite actuator systems, and decision-making support thanks to intelligent tradespace exploration during the preliminary design of space missions. The Artificial Intelligent technologies explored are: Machine Learning, and in particular Neural Networks; Knowledge-based Systems, and in particular Fuzzy Logics; Evolutionary Algorithms, and in particular Genetic Algorithms. The thesis covers the domain (small satellites), the technology (Artificial Intelligence), the focus (mission autonomy) and presents three case studies, that demonstrate the feasibility of employing Artificial Intelligence to enhance how missions are currently operated and designed

    A critical geopolitics of RAF recruitment

    PhD ThesisThis PhD thesis investigates the geopolitics of Royal Air Force (RAF) recruitment practices. Set at the interface between military and civilian life, RAF recruitment represents an important site from which particular imaginations of the military are consumed, enacted and performed. Drawing primarily on critical geopolitical theory and military geography, along with more-than-representational approaches to popular culture, the thesis uncovers how RAF recruitment necessitates an understanding of, and participation within, certain military-political narratives and imaginaries. It shows that these imaginaries – variously associated with the role, utility and legitimacy of state-sanctioned military violence – are powerful in their ability to affect popular understandings of the military, and to affect certain bodily and material engagements within the immediate spaces of recruitment. Furthermore, with a specific focus on the RAF, it demonstrates how certain ideas around the role and utility of military airpower are represented, enacted and performed. The thesis approaches the geopolitics of RAF recruitment in three ways. Firstly, focussing on the representative tenets of recruitment, the thesis examines both the historical and contemporary design of recruiting texts, images and documents. Using a socio-historical analysis of recruiting images, and drawing upon interviews with the military and corporate producers of recruitment, it demonstrates how recruitment emerges from particular structures, knowledges and experiences. Secondly, focussing on the visualities of military public-relations, the thesis demonstrates how large-scale public and private events, such as military airshows, provide spaces in which military-political narratives and imaginaries are enacted in and through regimes of seeing and sighting. Based on ethnographic research at military airshows, the thesis works to uncover the ways in which techniques of vision at spectacular events tie the potential recruit into particular imaginations of military legitimacy, efficacy, heritage and power. Thirdly, the thesis examines how the more mundane, quotidian sites of RAF recruitment are powerful in their ability to affect bodily predispositions and material engagements. Focussing on RAF recruiting games, military fitness regimes and the material, ephemeral nature of the airshow in particular, the thesis provides an insight into why the material and bodily cultures of militarism matter, and how they work persuasively to entrain particular imaginations of military life and culture. x The thesis raises important questions about the presence of military narratives and imaginaries in the public, civilian sphere, and in popular culture in particular. Set at the interface between military and civilian life, RAF recruitment demonstrates how popular geopolitical discourses of the military sometimes work not only to script imaginations of military violence, but to affect, mark and alter civilian lives and futures.ESR
