    Data Reduction for Graph Coloring Problems

    This paper studies the kernelization complexity of graph coloring problems with respect to certain structural parameterizations of the input instances. We are interested in how well polynomial-time data reduction can provably shrink instances of coloring problems, in terms of the chosen parameter. It is well known that deciding 3-colorability is already NP-complete, hence parameterizing by the requested number of colors is not fruitful. Instead, we pick up on a research thread initiated by Cai (DAM, 2003) who studied coloring problems parameterized by the modification distance of the input graph to a graph class on which coloring is polynomial-time solvable; for example parameterizing by the number k of vertex-deletions needed to make the graph chordal. We obtain various upper and lower bounds for kernels of such parameterizations of q-Coloring, complementing Cai's study of the time complexity with respect to these parameters. Our results show that the existence of polynomial kernels for q-Coloring parameterized by the vertex-deletion distance to a graph class F is strongly related to the existence of a function f(q) which bounds the number of vertices which are needed to preserve the NO-answer to an instance of q-List-Coloring on F.Comment: Author-accepted manuscript of the article that will appear in the FCT 2011 special issue of Information & Computatio

    Optimal Data Reduction for Graph Coloring Using Low-Degree Polynomials

    The theory of kernelization can be used to rigorously analyze data reduction for graph coloring problems. Here, the aim is to reduce a q-Coloring input to an equivalent but smaller input whose size is provably bounded in terms of structural properties, such as the size of a minimum vertex cover. In this paper we settle two open problems about data reduction for q-Coloring. First, we use a recent technique of finding redundant constraints by representing them as low-degree polynomials, to obtain a kernel of bitsize O(k^(q-1) log k) for q-Coloring parameterized by Vertex Cover for any q >= 3. This size bound is optimal up to k^o(1) factors assuming NP is not a subset of coNP/poly, and improves on the previous-best kernel of size O(k^q). Our second result shows that 3-Coloring does not admit non-trivial sparsification: assuming NP is not a subset of coNP/poly, the parameterization by the number of vertices n admits no (generalized) kernel of size O(n^(2-e)) for any e > 0.     Breaking Instance-Independent Symmetries In Exact Graph Coloring

    Code optimization and high level synthesis can be posed as constraint satisfaction and optimization problems, such as graph coloring used in register allocation. Graph coloring is also used to model more traditional CSPs relevant to AI, such as planning, time-tabling and scheduling. Provably optimal solutions may be desirable for commercial and defense applications. Additionally, for applications such as register allocation and code optimization, naturally-occurring instances of graph coloring are often small and can be solved optimally. A recent wave of improvements in algorithms for Boolean satisfiability (SAT) and 0-1 Integer Linear Programming (ILP) suggests generic problem-reduction methods, rather than problem-specific heuristics, because (1) heuristics may be upset by new constraints, (2) heuristics tend to ignore structure, and (3) many relevant problems are provably inapproximable. Problem reductions often lead to highly symmetric SAT instances, and symmetries are known to slow down SAT solvers. In this work, we compare several avenues for symmetry breaking, in particular when certain kinds of symmetry are present in all generated instances. Our focus on reducing CSPs to SAT allows us to leverage recent dramatic improvement in SAT solvers and automatically benefit from future progress. We can use a variety of black-box SAT solvers without modifying their source code because our symmetry-breaking techniques are static, i.e., we detect symmetries and add symmetry breaking predicates (SBPs) during pre-processing. An important result of our work is that among the types of instance-independent SBPs we studied and their combinations, the simplest and least complete constructions are the most effective. Our experiments also clearly indicate that instance-independent symmetries should mostly be processed together with instance-specific symmetries rather than at the specification level, contrary to what has been suggested in the literature

    Fast Local Computation Algorithms

    For input xx, let F(x)F(x) denote the set of outputs that are the "legal" answers for a computational problem FF. Suppose xx and members of F(x)F(x) are so large that there is not time to read them in their entirety. We propose a model of {\em local computation algorithms} which for a given input xx, support queries by a user to values of specified locations yiy_i in a legal output yF(x)y \in F(x). When more than one legal output yy exists for a given xx, the local computation algorithm should output in a way that is consistent with at least one such yy. Local computation algorithms are intended to distill the common features of several concepts that have appeared in various algorithmic subfields, including local distributed computation, local algorithms, locally decodable codes, and local reconstruction. We develop a technique, based on known constructions of small sample spaces of kk-wise independent random variables and Beck's analysis in his algorithmic approach to the Lov{\'{a}}sz Local Lemma, which under certain conditions can be applied to construct local computation algorithms that run in {\em polylogarithmic} time and space. We apply this technique to maximal independent set computations, scheduling radio network broadcasts, hypergraph coloring and satisfying kk-SAT formulas.Comment: A preliminary version of this paper appeared in ICS 2011, pp. 223-23

    Fast Dynamic Graph Algorithms for Parameterized Problems

    Fully dynamic graph is a data structure that (1) supports edge insertions and deletions and (2) answers problem specific queries. The time complexity of (1) and (2) are referred to as the update time and the query time respectively. There are many researches on dynamic graphs whose update time and query time are o(G)o(|G|), that is, sublinear in the graph size. However, almost all such researches are for problems in P. In this paper, we investigate dynamic graphs for NP-hard problems exploiting the notion of fixed parameter tractability (FPT). We give dynamic graphs for Vertex Cover and Cluster Vertex Deletion parameterized by the solution size kk. These dynamic graphs achieve almost the best possible update time O(poly(k)logn)O(\mathrm{poly}(k)\log n) and the query time O(f(poly(k),k))O(f(\mathrm{poly}(k),k)), where f(n,k)f(n,k) is the time complexity of any static graph algorithm for the problems. We obtain these results by dynamically maintaining an approximate solution which can be used to construct a small problem kernel. Exploiting the dynamic graph for Cluster Vertex Deletion, as a corollary, we obtain a quasilinear-time (polynomial) kernelization algorithm for Cluster Vertex Deletion. Until now, only quadratic time kernelization algorithms are known for this problem. We also give a dynamic graph for Chromatic Number parameterized by the solution size of Cluster Vertex Deletion, and a dynamic graph for bounded-degree Feedback Vertex Set parameterized by the solution size. Assuming the parameter is a constant, each dynamic graph can be updated in O(logn)O(\log n) time and can compute a solution in O(1)O(1) time.
