    Multiple-Resampling Receiver Design for OFDM Over Doppler-Distorted Underwater Acoustic Channels

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.In this paper, we focus on orthogonal frequency-divisionmultiplexing (OFDM) receiver designs for underwater acoustic (UWA) channels with user- and/or path-specific Doppler scaling distortions. The scenario is motivated by the cooperative communications framework, where distributed transmitter/receiver pairs may experience significantly different Doppler distortions, as well as by the single-user scenarios, where distinct Doppler scaling factors may exist among different propagation paths. The conventional approach of front–end resampling that corrects for common Doppler scalingmay not be appropriatein such scenarios, rendering a post-fast-Fourier-transform (FFT) signal that is contaminated by user- and/or path-specific intercarrier interference. To counteract this problem, we propose a family of front–end receiver structures thatutilizemultiple-resampling (MR)branches,eachmatched to the Doppler scaling factor of a particular user and/or path. Following resampling, FFT modules transform the Doppler-compensated signals into the frequency domain for further processing through linear or nonlinear detection schemes. As part of the overall receiver structure, a gradient–descent approachis also proposed to refine the channel estimates obtained by standard sparse channel estimators. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed receivers are demonstrated via simulations, as well as emulations based on real data collected during the 2010 Mobile Acoustic Communications Experiment (MACE10, Martha’s Vineyard, MA) and the 2008 Kauai Acomms MURI (KAM08, Kauai, HI) experiment

    Multibranch Autocorrelation Method for Doppler Estimation in Underwater Acoustic Channels

    In underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, Doppler estimation is one of the major stages in a receiver. Two Doppler estimation methods are often used: the cross-ambiguity function (CAF) method and the single-branch autocorrelation (SBA) method. The former results in accurate estimation but with a high complexity, whereas the latter is less complicated but also less accurate. In this paper, we propose and investigate a multibranch autocorrelation (MBA) Doppler estimation method. The proposed method can be used in communication systems with periodically transmitted pilot signals or repetitive data transmission. For comparison of the Doppler estimation methods, we investigate an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system in multiple dynamic scenarios using the Waymark simulator, allowing virtual UWA signal transmission between moving transmitter and receiver. For the comparison, we also use the OFDM signals recorded in a sea trial. The comparison shows that the receiver with the proposed MBA Doppler estimation method outperforms the receiver with the SBA method and its detection performance is close to that of the receiver with the CAF method, but with a significantly lower complexity

    Low Complexity AOFDM System for Time-varying Wireless Channels

    Signal transmitted through a wireless channel undergoes distortion due to the pres­ ence of reflectors in the environment between a transmitter and a receiver as well as due to the Doppler shift caused by the relative movement of the receiver with respect to the transmitter. Distorted signal is recovered at the receiver side by means of predicting the channel responses and performing inverse operation that the channel introduced on the transmitted signal. Prediction of channel responses becomes more complex when the receiver moves with a varying speed since it directly affects the auto-correlation of the channel responses. First part of this thesis provides a solution for recovering the transmitted data when the receiver is moving with varying speed. The system first tracks the receiver speed variations using the number of deep fadings (nulls) in the received signal enve­ lope of one sub-carrier during a fixed time period. If there is a significant change in receiver speed then the Kalman filter parameters are calculated and updated. Future channel responses are predicted using the updated Kalman filter parameters and used in equalizer to recover the distorted signal. The performance and computational effi­ ciency of the proposed system outperforms the conventional system which calculates predictor parameters at a fixed interval. Second part of the thesis presents an adaptive modulation technique based on the signal-to-noise ratio and the receiver speed. Modulation schemes for different combinations of signal-to-noise ratio and receiver speeds are obtained by selecting the higher modulation scheme with the bit error rate less than target bit error rate. Boundaries of the selected modulation schemes are found using support vector ma­ chine classifiers. The receiver uses the designed system to select appropriate modula­ tion scheme by mapping the current modulation scheme and the channel conditions. The proposed system outperforms conventional adaptive modulation technique that uses instantaneous signa-to-noise ratio by a margin of 5 dB

    Frequency Agile OFDM System for Radio Communication in High Frequency Bands

    High Frequency (HF) radio communication existed as the primary source of over-the-horizon communication for decades prior to the wide implementation of satellite and cellular networks. Even today, should satellite communication become unavailable, the robust backup of HF vitally supports long distance data transmission without the need of a cellular infrastructure. This capability is of particular importance to naval applications while at sea. Frequency choice, however, becomes critical in supporting reliable HF communication as too high of a frequency will not return to earth and too low of a frequency will result in high absorption rates within the atmosphere. A potential solution to explore is to use Software Defined Radio to implement dynamic frequency assignment at regular intervals based on predictive modeling software. Once the optimal frequency is selected and available bandwidth determined, additional parameters can then be optimized to support high data rate reliable transmissions. To overcome the turbulent atmospheric conditions within the atmosphere as bandwidth is increased, we study implementation of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to enable a multichannel approach to support the available bandwidth. The concept of applying cognitive radio as sensors become available is also introduced for future implementation

    Multicarrier communication over underwater acoustic channels with nonuniform Doppler shifts

In this paper, we treat the channel as having a common Doppler scaling factor on all propagation paths, and propose a two-step approach to mitigating the Doppler effect: 1) nonuniform Doppler compensation via resampling that converts a "wideband" problem into a "narrowband" problem and 2) high-resolution uniform compensation of the residual Doppler. We focus on zero-padded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to minimize the transmission power. Null subcarriers are used to facilitate Doppler compensation, and pilot subcarriers are used for channel estimation. The receiver is based on block-by-block processing, and does not rely on channel dependence across OFDM blocks; thus, it is suitable for fast-varying UWA channels. The data from two shallow-water experiments near Woods Hole, MA, are used to demonstrate the receiver performance. Excellent performance results are obtained even when the transmitter and the receiver are moving at a relative speed of up to 10 kn, at which the Doppler shifts are greater than the OFDM subcarrier spacing. These results suggest that OFDM is a viable option for high-rate communications over wideband UWA channels with nonuniform Doppler shifts.B. Li and S.     Efficient use of space-time clustering for underwater acoustic communications

    Underwater acoustic (UWA) communication channels are characterized by the spreading of received signals in space (direction of arrival) and in time (delay). The spread is often limited to a small number of space-time clusters. In this paper, the spacetime clustering is exploited in a proposed receiver designed for guard-free orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with superimposed data and pilot signals. For separation of space clusters, the receiver utilizes a vertical linear array (VLA) of hydrophones, whereas for combining delay-spread signals within a space cluster, a time-domain equalizer is used. We compare a number of space-time processing techniques, including a proposed reduced-complexity spatial filter, and show that techniques exploiting the space-time clustering demonstrate an improved detection performance. The comparison is done using signals transmitted by a moving transducer, and recorded on a 14-element non-uniform VLA in sea trials at distances of 46 km and 105 km

    High mobility in OFDM based wireless communication systems

    Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as the transmission scheme in most of the wireless systems we use on a daily basis. It brings with it several inherent advantages that make it an ideal waveform candidate in the physical layer. However, OFDM based wireless systems are severely affected in High Mobility scenarios. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of mobility on OFDM based wireless systems and develop novel techniques to estimate the channel and compensate its effects at the receiver. Compressed Sensing (CS) based channel estimation techniques like the Rake Matching Pursuit (RMP) and the Gradient Rake Matching Pursuit (GRMP) are developed to estimate the channel in a precise, robust and computationally efficient manner. In addition to this, a Cognitive Framework that can detect the mobility in the channel and configure an optimal estimation scheme is also developed and tested. The Cognitive Framework ensures a computationally optimal channel estimation scheme in all channel conditions. We also demonstrate that the proposed schemes can be adapted to other wireless standards easily. Accordingly, evaluation is done for three current broadcast, broadband and cellular standards. The results show the clear benefit of the proposed schemes in enabling high mobility in OFDM based wireless communication systems.Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wurde als Übertragungsschema in die meisten drahtlosen Systemen, die wir täglich verwenden, übernommen. Es bringt mehrere inhärente Vorteile mit sich, die es zu einem idealen Waveform-Kandidaten in der Bitübertragungsschicht (Physical Layer) machen. Allerdings sind OFDM-basierte drahtlose Systeme in Szenarien mit hoher Mobilität stark beeinträchtigt. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir die Auswirkungen der Mobilität auf OFDM-basierte drahtlose Systeme und entwickeln neuartige Techniken, um das Verhalten des Kanals abzuschätzen und seine Auswirkungen am Empfänger zu kompensieren. Auf Compressed Sensing (CS) basierende Kanalschätzverfahren wie das Rake Matching Pursuit (RMP) und das Gradient Rake Matching Pursuit (GRMP) werden entwickelt, um den Kanal präzise, robust und rechnerisch effizient abzuschätzen. Darüber hinaus wird ein Cognitive Framework entwickelt und getestet, das die Mobilität im Kanal erkennt und ein optimales Schätzungsschema konfiguriert. Das Cognitive Framework gewährleistet ein rechnerisch optimales Kanalschätzungsschema für alle möglichen Kanalbedingungen. Wir zeigen außerdem, dass die vorgeschlagenen Schemata auch leicht an andere Funkstandards angepasst werden können. Dementsprechend wird eine Evaluierung für drei aktuelle Rundfunk-, Breitband- und Mobilfunkstandards durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen den klaren Vorteil der vorgeschlagenen Schemata bei der Ermöglichung hoher Mobilität in OFDM-basierten drahtlosen Kommunikationssystemen

    Iterative Receiver for MIMO-OFDM System with ICI Cancellation and Channel Estimation

    As a multi-carrier modulation scheme, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique can achieve high data rate in frequency-selective fading channels by splitting a broadband signal into a number of narrowband signals over a number of subcarriers, where each subcarrier is more robust to multipath. The wireless communication system with multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver, known as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, achieves high capacity by transmitting independent information over different antennas simultaneously. The combination of OFDM with multiple antennas has been considered as one of most promising techniques for future wireless communication systems. The challenge in the detection of a space-time signal is to design a low-complexity detector, which can efficiently remove interference resulted from channel variations and approach the interference-free bound. The application of iterative parallel interference canceller (PIC) with joint detection and decoding has been a promising approach. However, the decision statistics of a linear PIC is biased toward the decision boundary after the first cancellation stage. In this thesis, we employ an iterative receiver with a decoder metric, which considerably reduces the bias effect in the second iteration, which is critical for the performance of the iterative algorithm. Channel state information is required in a MIMO-OFDM system signal detection at the receiver. Its accuracy directly affects the overall performance of MIMO-OFDM systems. In order to estimate the channel in high-delay-spread environments, pilot symbols should be inserted among subcarriers before transmission. To estimate the channel over all the subcarriers, various types of interpolators can be used. In this thesis, a linear interpolator and a trigonometric interpolator are compared. Then we propose a new interpolator called the multi-tap method, which has a much better system performance. In MIMO-OFDM systems, the time-varying fading channels can destroy the orthogonality of subcarriers. This causes serious intercarrier interference (ICI), thus leading to significant system performance degradation, which becomes more severe as the normalized Doppler frequency increases. In this thesis, we propose a low-complexity iterative receiver with joint frequency- domain ICI cancellation and pilot-assisted channel estimation to minimize the effect of time-varying fading channels. At the first stage of receiver, the interference between adjacent subcarriers is subtracted from received OFDM symbols. The parallel interference cancellation detection with decision statistics combining (DSC) is then performed to suppress the interference from other antennas. By restricting the interference to a limited number of neighboring subcarriers, the computational complexity of the proposed receiver can be significantly reduced. In order to construct the time variant channel matrix in the frequency domain, channel estimation is required. However, an accurate estimation requiring complete knowledge of channel time variations for each block, cannot be obtained. For time- varying frequency-selective fading channels, the placement of pilot tones also has a significant impact on the quality of the channel estimates. Under the assumption that channel variations can be approximated by a linear model, we can derive channel state information (CSI) in the frequency domain and estimate time-domain channel parameters. In this thesis, an iterative low-complexity channel estimation method is proposed to improve the system performance. Pilot symbols are inserted in the transmitted OFDM symbols to mitigate the effect of ICI and the channel estimates are used to update the results of both the frequency domain equalizer and the PICDSC detector in each iteration. The complexity of this algorithm can be reduced because the matrices are precalculated and stored in the receiver when the placement of pilots symbols is fixed in OFDM symbols before transmission. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed MIMO-OFDM iterative receiver can effectively mitigate the effect of ICI and approach the ICI-free performance over time-varying frequency-selective fading channels

    Narrowband Interference Suppression in Wireless OFDM Systems

    Signal distortions in communication systems occur between the transmitter and the receiver; these distortions normally cause bit errors at the receiver. In addition interference by other signals may add to the deterioration in performance of the communication link. In order to achieve reliable communication, the effects of the communication channel distortion and interfering signals must be reduced using different techniques. The aim of this paper is to introduce the fundamentals of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), to review and examine the effects of interference in a digital data communication link and to explore methods for mitigating or compensating for these effects
