Planar multilayer circuit quantum electrodynamics
Experimental quantum information processing with superconducting circuits is
rapidly advancing, driven by innovation in two classes of devices, one
involving planar micro-fabricated (2D) resonators, and the other involving
machined three-dimensional (3D) cavities. We demonstrate that circuit quantum
electrodynamics can be implemented in a multilayer superconducting structure
that combines 2D and 3D advantages. We employ standard micro-fabrication
techniques to pattern each layer, and rely on a vacuum gap between the layers
to store the electromagnetic energy. Planar qubits are lithographically defined
as an aperture in a conducting boundary of the resonators. We demonstrate the
aperture concept by implementing an integrated, two cavity-modes, one
transmon-qubit system
Apparatus for a Search for T-violating Muon Polarization in Stopped-Kaon Decays
The detector built at KEK to search for T-violating transverse muon
polarization in K+ --> pi0 mu+ nu (Kmu3) decay of stopped kaons is described.
Sensitivity to the transverse polarization component is obtained from
reconstruction of the decay plane by tracking the mu+ through a toroidal
spectrometer and detecting the pi0 in a segmented CsI(Tl) photon calorimeter.
The muon polarization was obtained from the decay positron asymmetry of muons
stopped in a polarimeter. The detector included features which minimized
systematic errors while maintaining high acceptance.Comment: 56 pages, 30 figures, submitted to NI
Analysis and evaluation in the production process and equipment area of the low-cost solar array project
It was found that the Solarex metallization design and process selection should be modified to yield substantially higher output of the 10 cm x 10 cm cells, while the Westinghouse design is extremely close to the optimum. In addition, further attention to the Solarex pn junction and base high/low junction formation processes could be beneficial. For the future efficiency improvement, it was found that refinement of the various minority carrier lifetime measurement methods is needed, as well as considerably increased sophistication in the interpretation of the results of these methods. In addition, it was determined that further experimental investigation of the Auger lifetime is needed, to conclusively determine the Auger coefficients for the direct Auger recombination at high majority carrier concentrations

Milagrito: a TeV air-shower array
Milagrito, a large, covered water-Cherenkov detector, was the world's first
air-shower-particle detector sensitive to cosmic gamma rays below 1 TeV. It
served as a prototype for the Milagro detector and operated from February 1997
to May 1998. This paper gives a description of Milagrito, a summary of the
operating experience, and early results that demonstrate the capabilities of
this technique.Comment: 38 pages including 24 figure
