Physical-Layer Encryption Using Digital Chaos for Secure OFDM Transmission
Due to the broadcasting nature of passive optical network (PON), data security is challenging. For the transmission of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is considered as one of the major drawbacks. This chapter reviews the digital chaos-based secure OFDM data encryption schemes, where the transmission performance is improved via PAPR reduction. The digital chaos is incorporated into the signal scrambling approaches: selective mapping (SLM), partial transmit sequence (PTS); and precoding approaches: discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) for PAPR reduction. Multi-fold data encryption is achieved with a huge key space provided by digital chaos, to enhance the physical-layer security for OFDM-PON, while the pseudo-random properties of digital chaos are applied for PAPR reduction, which consequently improves the transmission performance. The evidences of these encryption approaches are presented in terms of theories, simulations, as well as experimental demonstrations. The chaotic data encryption schemes could be promising candidates for next-generation OFDM-PON
PAPR Reduction for Improved Efficiency of OFDM Modulation for Next Generation Communication Systems
Highly linear power amplifiers are required for transferring  large amount of data for future communication. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) provides high data rate transmission capability with robustness to radio channel impairments. It has been widely accepted for future communication for different services. But, it suffers from high value of peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). High value of PAPR drives high power amplifier into its saturation region and causes it to operate in the nonlinear region. In this paper, comparative study of four different PAPR reduction techniques: clipping and filtering (CF), selective mapping method (SLM), partial transmit sequence (PTS) and DFT- spread technique have been done. Mathematical modeling and Matlab simulations have been performed to arrive at the results with 4 QAM modulation format and 1024 number of sub carriers. At 0.01 % of complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) significant reduction of 11.3, 3.5, 3.4 and 1.0 dB have been obtained with DFT- spread, SLM, PTS and CF techniques respectively

The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with simulation of the transmission of control information in baseband. The created simulators for uplink and downlink are presented. The simulations are performed for all possible system settings and various channel models. The MIMO influence on a quality of control information reception under fading channels is also presented. The second part of the thesis is focused on LTE utilization in shared channel ISM (2.4 GHz). The basic LTE application concept for ISM band is presented. This concept is fundamental to created simulation scenario. The chapter also presents the LTE and Wi-Fi coexistence simulator in 2.4 GHz ISM passband. The coexistence simulation are presented according to simulation scenario and the results are shown. The simulated coexistence analysis results are verified in laboratory environment. The comparison of the simulated and the measured coexistence analysis results is crucial for further optimization of the coexistence simulator. Recommendations for optimal and reliable operation of LTE are specified according to the simulated and the measured results. Recommendations should be useful to the reliable transmission of LTE control information in bad receiving conditions.
LTE implementation on CGRA based SiLago Platform
Abstract. This thesis implements long term evolution (LTE) transmission layer on a coarse grained reconfigurable called, dynamically reconfigurable resource array (DRRA). Specifically, we implement physical downlink shared channel baseband signal processing blocks (PDSCH) at high level. The overall implementation follows silicon large grain object (SiLago) design methodology. The methodology employs SiLago blocks instead of mainstream standard cells. The main ambition of this thesis was to prove that a standard as complex as LTE can be implemented using the in-house SiLago framework. The work aims to prove that customized design with efficiency close to application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for LTE can be generated with the programming ease of MATLAB. During this thesis, we have generated a completely parametrizable LTE standard at high level
Estimation of Sparse MIMO Channels with Common Support
We consider the problem of estimating sparse communication channels in the
MIMO context. In small to medium bandwidth communications, as in the current
standards for OFDM and CDMA communication systems (with bandwidth up to 20
MHz), such channels are individually sparse and at the same time share a common
support set. Since the underlying physical channels are inherently
continuous-time, we propose a parametric sparse estimation technique based on
finite rate of innovation (FRI) principles. Parametric estimation is especially
relevant to MIMO communications as it allows for a robust estimation and
concise description of the channels. The core of the algorithm is a
generalization of conventional spectral estimation methods to multiple input
signals with common support. We show the application of our technique for
channel estimation in OFDM (uniformly/contiguous DFT pilots) and CDMA downlink
(Walsh-Hadamard coded schemes). In the presence of additive white Gaussian
noise, theoretical lower bounds on the estimation of SCS channel parameters in
Rayleigh fading conditions are derived. Finally, an analytical spatial channel
model is derived, and simulations on this model in the OFDM setting show the
symbol error rate (SER) is reduced by a factor 2 (0 dB of SNR) to 5 (high SNR)
compared to standard non-parametric methods - e.g. lowpass interpolation.Comment: 12 pages / 7 figures. Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communicatio
Peak-to-Average-Power-Ratio (PAPR) Reduction Techniques for Orthogonal-Frequency-Division- Multiplexing (OFDM) Transmission
Wireless communication has experienced an incredible growth in the last decade. Two decades ago,the number of mobile subscribers was less than 1% of the world\u27s population. As of 2011, the number of mobile subscribers has increased tremendously to 79.86% of the world\u27s population.
Robust and high-rate data transmission in mobile environments faces severe problems due to the time-variant channel conditions, multipath fading and shadow fading. Fading is the main limitation on wireless communication channels. Frequency selective interference and fading, such as multipath fading, is a bandwidth bottleneck in the last mile which runs from the access point to the user. The last mile problem in wireless communication networks is caused by the environment of free space channels through which the signal propagates. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising modulation and multiplexing technique due to its robustness against multipath fading. Nevertheless, OFDM suffers from high Peak-to-Average- Power-Ratio (PAPR), which results in a complex OFDM signal.
In this research, reduction of PAPR considering the out-of-band radiation and the regeneration of the time-domain signal peaks caused by filtering has been studied and is presented. Our PAPR reduction was 30% of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) with Interleaved Frequency Division Multiple Access (IFDMA) utilizing Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and varying the roll-off factor. We show that pulse shaping does not affect the PAPR of Localized Frequency Division Multiple Access (LFDMA) as much as it affects the PAPR of IFDMA. Therefore, IFDMA has an important trade-off relationship between excess bandwidth and PAPR performance, since excess bandwidth increases as the roll-off factor increases. In addition, we studied a low complexity clipping scheme, applicable to IFDMA uplink and OFDM downlink systems for PAPR reduction. We show that the performance of the PAPR of the Interleaved-FDMA scheme is better than traditional OFDMA for the uplink
transmission system. Our reduction of PAPR is 53% when IFDMA is used instead of OFDMA in the uplink direction. Furthermore, we also examined an important trade-off relationship between clipping distortion and quantization noise when the clipping scheme is used for OFDM downlink systems. Our results show a significant reduction in the PAPR and the out-of-band radiation caused by clipping for OFDM downlink transmission system
