Micromagnetic Domain Structures in Cylindrical Nickel Dots
The magnetic domain structures of cylindrical nickel dots (diameters from 40 nm to 1700 nm) with anisotropy parallel to the cylinder axis is predicted by the ratio of the dot diameter to the stripe period of unpatterned films with the same perpendicular anisotropy. The dominant domain structure for a given ratio increases in complexity as the ratio increases. We present evidence for the full micromagnetic domain structure for the simplest cases
Large time behavior of solutions of the bipolar hydrodynamical model for semiconductors
AbstractThe asymptotic behavior of classical solutions of the bipolar hydrodynamical model for semiconductors is considered in the present paper. This system takes the form of Euler–Poisson with electric field and frictional damping added to the momentum equation. The global existence of classical solutions is proven, and the nonlinear diffusive phenomena is observed in large time in the sense that both densities of electron and hole tend to the same unique nonlinear diffusive wave

Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Supernovae from the ESSENCE Project: The First Two Years
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of targets discovered
during the first two years of the ESSENCE project. The goal of ESSENCE is to
use a sample of ~200 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at moderate redshifts (0.2 < z
< 0.8) to place constraints on the equation of state of the Universe.
Spectroscopy not only provides the redshifts of the objects, but also confirms
that some of the discoveries are indeed SNe Ia. This confirmation is critical
to the project, as techniques developed to determine luminosity distances to
SNe Ia depend upon the knowledge that the objects at high redshift are the same
as the ones at low redshift. We describe the methods of target selection and
prioritization, the telescopes and detectors, and the software used to identify
objects. The redshifts deduced from spectral matching of high-redshift SNe Ia
with low-redshift SNe Ia are consistent with those determined from host-galaxy
spectra. We show that the high-redshift SNe Ia match well with low-redshift
templates. We include all spectra obtained by the ESSENCE project, including 52
SNe Ia, 5 core-collapse SNe, 12 active galactic nuclei, 19 galaxies, 4 possibly
variable stars, and 16 objects with uncertain identifications.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures (many with multiple parts), submitted to A

Milky Way Demographics with the VVV Survey II. Color Transformations and Near-Infrared Photometry for 136 Million Stars in the Southern Galactic Disk
The new multi-epoch near-infrared VVV survey (VISTA Variables in the Via
Lactea) is sampling 562 sq. deg of the Galactic bulge and adjacent regions of
the disk. Accurate astrometry established for the region surveyed allows the
VVV data to be merged with overlapping surveys (e.g., GLIMPSE, WISE, 2MASS,
etc.), thereby enabling the construction of longer baseline spectral energy
distributions for astronomical targets. However, in order to maximize use of
the VVV data, a set of transformation equations are required to place the VVV
JHKs photometry onto the 2MASS system. The impetus for this work is to develop
those transformations via a comparison of 2MASS targets in 152 VVV fields
sampling the Galactic disk. The transformation coefficients derived exhibit a
reliance on variables such as extinction. The transformed data were
subsequently employed to establish a mean reddening law of
E_{J-H}/E_{H-Ks}=2.13 +/- 0.04, which is the most precise determination to date
and merely emphasizes the pertinence of the VVV data for determining such
important parameters.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, published in A&
