Novel channel sensing and access strategies in opportunistic spectrum access networks
textTraditionally radio spectrum was considered a commodity to be allocated in a fixed and centralized manner, but now the technical community and the regulators approach it as a shared resource that can be flexibly and intelligently shared between competing entities. In this thesis we focus on novel strategies to sense and access the radio spectrum within the framework of Opportunistic Spectrum Access via Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs).
In the first part we develop novel transmit opportunity detection methods that effectively exploit the gray space present in packet based networks. Our methods proactively detect the maximum safe transmit power that does not significantly affect the primary network nodes via an implicit feedback mechanism from the Primary network to the Secondary network. A novel use of packet interarrival duration is developed to robustly perform change detection in the primary network's Quality of Service. The methods are validated on real world IEEE 802.11 WLANs.
In the second part we study the inferential use of Goodness-of-Fit tests for spectrum sensing applications. We provide the first comprehensive framework for decision fusion of an ensemble of goodness-of-fit tests through use of p-values. Also, we introduce a generalized Phi-divergence statistic to formulate goodness-of-fit tests that are tunable via a single parameter. We show that under uncertainty in the noise statistics or non-Gaussianity in the noise, the performance of such non-parametric tests is significantly superior to that of conventional spectrum sensing methods. Additionally, we describe a collaborative spatially separated version of the test for robust combining of tests in a distributed spectrum sensing setting.
In the third part we develop the sequential energy detection problem for spectrum sensing and formulate a novel Sequential Energy Detector. Through extensive simulations we demonstrate that our doubly hierarchical sequential testing architecture delivers a significant throughput improvement of 2 to 6 times over the fixed sample size test while maintaining equivalent operating characteristics as measured by the Probabilities of Detection and False Alarm. We also demonstrate the throughput gains for a case study of sensing ATSC television signals in IEEE 802.22 systems.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Deep reinforcement learning for attacking wireless sensor networks
Recent advances in Deep Reinforcement Learning allow solving increasingly complex problems. In this work, we show how current defense mechanisms in Wireless Sensor Networks are vulnerable to attacks that use these advances. We use a Deep Reinforcement Learning attacker architecture that allows having one or more attacking agents that can learn to attack using only partial observations. Then, we subject our architecture to a test-bench consisting of two defense mechanisms against a distributed spectrum sensing attack and a backoff attack. Our simulations show that our attacker learns to exploit these systems without having a priori information about the defense mechanism used nor its concrete parameters. Since our attacker requires minimal hyper-parameter tuning, scales with the number of attackers, and learns only by interacting with the defense mechanism, it poses a significant threat to current defense procedures
Fast and reliable detection of incumbent users in cognitive radios
Fast and reliable Spectrum Sensing (SS) plays a crucial role in the cognitive radio (CR) technology in order to prevent unwanted interference to the primary users (PU) and to reliably and quickly detect the white spaces in the spectrum for opportunistic access by the secondary users (SU). Spectrum Sensing must often be performed in the absence of information such as PU signaling scheme, noise level and channel fading coefficients. While these parameters can be estimated in the SU, estimation errors significantly deteriorates the performance of SS techniques. In this thesis, we introduce and evaluate the performance of two novel blind spectrum sensing algorithms which do not rely on knowledge of these parameters. The first is a SS technique for signaling schemes which introduce controlled intersymbol interference in the transmitter. The second is for cases when the receiver of the SU is equipped with a multiantenna system. This approach exploits the path correlation among the signals received at different antennas. Next we analyze the performance of Spectrum Monitoring (SM), an new technique which allows the SU to detect the presence of the PU using its own receiver statistics. In contrast to SS, with SM, the SU does not need to interrupt its own transmission in order to detect the presence of the PU. We carefully construct the decision statistics for SM and evaluate its performance. The performance of a hybrid SM/SS system shows a significant improvement over SS alone
Spectrum Sensing Based on Censored Observations in Time-Varying Channels using AR-1 Model
Non-parametric sensing algorithms are preferred in cognitive radio. In this paper, spectrum sensing method based on censored observations is proposed. We evaluate the performance of Censored Anderson-Darling (CAD) sensing method in time-varying and flat-fading channel using Monte Carlo simulations. We have shown the performance of the CAD sensing in terms of receiver operating characteristic (ROC). The considered channel is modeled by Gaussian variables and characterized by a first ordered autoregressive process (). It is shown that the proposed method outperforms prevailing techniques such as the Energy detection (ED) sensing and Order-statistic (OS) based sensing in time-varying channel at lower signal to noise ratio
The constant growth in the number of electronic devices leads to increasing of spectrum occupancy. In addition, new data transmission technologies are constantly used and time-frequency structure of signals become more complicate. These factors lead to a significant complication of electronic environment, which leads to new approaches to fast spectrum sensing. In most publications, to make a decision about the presence or absence of signals in a given frequency band, some transform is taken from the signal, followed by the calculation of test statistics. However, it is not indicated for what reasons this type of test statistics was chosen and whether it is optimal for a given transform and type of signal spectrum shape.Problem of choosing the optimal type of test statistics is especially actual when working in conditions of unknown and variable noise power, as well as with a wide dynamic range of signals. Test statistics should be sensitive to spectrum outliers. The essence of the proposed method is forming a set of test statistics and calculating the value of coefficient of efficiency as the sum of detection probabilities for different spectrum shapes using these statistics for different signal-to-noise ratios and spectrum occupancy. The maximum value of the coefficient of efficiency will correspond to the optimal type of test statistics. As a result of the research, it was found that to separate frequency samples into signal and noise, it is advisable to use coefficient of variation. Prospects of further research in this direction should be focused on development of methods for dynamic transition between types of test statistics in process of radio monitoring, depending on changes in the electronic environment.
Multiscale image denoising using goodness-of-fit test based on EDF statistics.
Two novel image denoising algorithms are proposed which employ goodness of fit (GoF) test at multiple image scales. Proposed methods operate by employing the GoF tests locally on the wavelet coefficients of a noisy image obtained via discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and the dual tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) respectively. We next formulate image denoising as a binary hypothesis testing problem with the null hypothesis indicating the presence of noise and the alternate hypothesis representing the presence of desired signal only. The decision that a given wavelet coefficient corresponds to the null hypothesis or the alternate hypothesis involves the GoF testing based on empirical distribution function (EDF), applied locally on the noisy wavelet coefficients. The performance of the proposed methods is validated by comparing them against the state of the art image denoising methods
