    Media-processing applications, such as signal processing, 2D and 3D graphics rendering, and image compression, are the dominant workloads in many embedded systems today. The real-time constraints of those media applications have taxing demands on today's processor performances with low cost, low power and reduced design delay. To satisfy those challenges, a fast and efficient strategy consists in upgrading a low cost general purpose processor core. This approach is based on the personalization of a general RISC processor core according the target multimedia application requirements. Thus, if the extra cost is justified, the general purpose processor GPP core can be enforced with instruction level coprocessors, coarse grain dedicated hardware, ad hoc memories or new GPP cores. In this way the final design solution is tailored to the application requirements. The proposed approach is based on three main steps: the first one is the analysis of the targeted application using efficient metrics. The second step is the selection of the appropriate architecture template according to the first step results and recommendations. The third step is the architecture generation. This approach is experimented using various image and video algorithms showing its feasibility

    GPGPU Programming and the Pitfalls of Nave Data Handling

    The purpose of this study was to implement a known bottleneck of a model based video encoder in code that runs on a modern graphics card using various methods. The study then looks the degree of speedup as well as the new bottlenecks for each implementation. The study also compares and contrasts the effectiveness of each method at improving the performance of the encoder. While moving the highly parallel error calculation to the graphics card reduced the time required to perform the computation, the program still ran slower. Through analysis of the processors performance counters, the image data appears to move through system memory even though its origin and destination are in graphics memory. This inefficient handling of the data that should remain in graphics memory is removing any potential speedup from using the graphics card as a highly parallel coprocessor to accelerate the slowest part of the original program.School of Electrical & Computer Engineerin

    Flexi-WVSNP-DASH: A Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform for the Internet of Things

    abstract: Video capture, storage, and distribution in wireless video sensor networks (WVSNs) critically depends on the resources of the nodes forming the sensor networks. In the era of big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and distributed demand and solutions, there is a need for multi-dimensional data to be part of the Sensor Network data that is easily accessible and consumable by humanity as well as machinery. Images and video are expected to become as ubiquitous as is the scalar data in traditional sensor networks. The inception of video-streaming over the Internet, heralded a relentless research for effective ways of distributing video in a scalable and cost effective way. There has been novel implementation attempts across several network layers. Due to the inherent complications of backward compatibility and need for standardization across network layers, there has been a refocused attention to address most of the video distribution over the application layer. As a result, a few video streaming solutions over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) have been proposed. Most notable are Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and the Motion Picture Experts Groups Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH). These frameworks, do not address the typical and future WVSN use cases. A highly flexible Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform and compatible DASH (WVSNP-DASH) are introduced. The platform's goal is to usher video as a data element that can be integrated into traditional and non-Internet networks. A low cost, scalable node is built from the ground up to be fully compatible with the Internet of Things Machine to Machine (M2M) concept, as well as the ability to be easily re-targeted to new applications in a short time. Flexi-WVSNP design includes a multi-radio node, a middle-ware for sensor operation and communication, a cross platform client facing data retriever/player framework, scalable security as well as a cohesive but decoupled hardware and software design.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Fast GPU audio identification

    Audio identification consist in the ability to pair audio signals of the same perceptual nature. In other words, the aim is to be able to compare an audio signal with a modified versions perceptually equivalent. To accomplish that, an audio fingerprint is extracted from the signals and only the fingerprints are compared to asses the similarity. Some guarantee have to be given about the equivalence between comparing audio fingerprints and perceptually comparing the signals. In designing AFPs, a dense representation is more robust than a sparse one. A dense representation also imply more compute cycles and hence a slower processing speed. To speedup the computing of a very dense audio fingerprint, able to stand stable under noise, re-recording, low-pass filtering, etc., we propose the use of a massive parallel architecture based on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with the CUDA programming kit. We prove experimentally that even with a relatively small GPU and using a single core in the GPU, we are able to obtain a notable speedup per core in a GPU/CPU model.     Design and management of image processing pipelines within CPS: Acquired experience towards the end of the FitOptiVis ECSEL Project

    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are dynamic and reactive systems interacting with processes, environment and, sometimes, humans. They are often distributed with sensors and actuators, characterized for being smart, adaptive, predictive and react in real-time. Indeed, image- and video-processing pipelines are a prime source for environmental information for systems allowing them to take better decisions according to what they see. Therefore, in FitOptiVis, we are developing novel methods and tools to integrate complex image- and video-processing pipelines. FitOptiVis aims to deliver a reference architecture for describing and optimizing quality and resource management for imaging and video pipelines in CPSs both at design- and run-time. The architecture is concretized in low-power, high-performance, smart components, and in methods and tools for combined design-time and run-time multi-objective optimization and adaptation within system and environment constraints

    Energy analysis and optimisation techniques for automatically synthesised coprocessors

    The primary outcome of this research project is the development of a methodology enabling fast automated early-stage power and energy analysis of configurable processors for system-on-chip platforms. Such capability is essential to the process of selecting energy efficient processors during design-space exploration, when potential savings are highest. This has been achieved by developing dynamic and static energy consumption models for the constituent blocks within the processors. Several optimisations have been identified, specifically targeting the most significant blocks in terms of energy consumption. Instruction encoding mechanism reduces both the energy and area requirements of the instruction cache; modifications to the multiplier unit reduce energy consumption during inactive cycles. Both techniques are demonstrated to offer substantial energy savings. The aforementioned techniques have undergone detailed evaluation and, based on the positive outcomes obtained, have been incorporated into Cascade, a system-on-chip coprocessor synthesis tool developed by Critical Blue, to provide automated analysis and optimisation of processor energy requirements. This thesis details the process of identifying and examining each method, along with the results obtained. Finally, a case study demonstrates the benefits of the developed functionality, from the perspective of someone using Cascade to automate the creation of an energy-efficient configurable processor for system-on-chip platforms
