    Shared control strategies for automated vehicles

    188 p.Los vehículos automatizados (AVs) han surgido como una solución tecnológica para compensar las deficiencias de la conducción manual. Sin embargo, esta tecnología aún no está lo suficientemente madura para reemplazar completamente al conductor, ya que esto plantea problemas técnicos, sociales y legales. Sin embargo, los accidentes siguen ocurriendo y se necesitan nuevas soluciones tecnológicas para mejorar la seguridad vial. En este contexto, el enfoque de control compartido, en el que el conductor permanece en el bucle de control y, junto con la automatización, forma un equipo bien coordinado que colabora continuamente en los niveles táctico y de control de la tarea de conducción, es una solución prometedora para mejorar el rendimiento de la conducción manual aprovechando los últimos avances en tecnología de conducción automatizada. Esta estrategia tiene como objetivo promover el desarrollo de sistemas de asistencia al conductor más avanzados y con mayor grade de cooperatición en comparación con los disponibles en los vehículos comerciales. En este sentido, los vehículos automatizados serán los supervisores que necesitan los conductores, y no al revés. La presente tesis aborda en profundidad el tema del control compartido en vehículos automatizados, tanto desde una perspectiva teórica como práctica. En primer lugar, se proporciona una revisión exhaustiva del estado del arte para brindar una descripción general de los conceptos y aplicaciones en los que los investigadores han estado trabajando durante lasúltimas dos décadas. Luego, se adopta un enfoque práctico mediante el desarrollo de un controlador para ayudar al conductor en el control lateral del vehículo. Este controlador y su sistema de toma de decisiones asociado (Módulo de Arbitraje) se integrarán en el marco general de conducción automatizada y se validarán en una plataforma de simulación con conductores reales. Finalmente, el controlador desarrollado se aplica a dos sistemas. El primero para asistir a un conductor distraído y el otro en la implementación de una función de seguridad para realizar maniobras de adelantamiento en carreteras de doble sentido. Al finalizar, se presentan las conclusiones más relevantes y las perspectivas de investigación futuras para el control compartido en la conducción automatizada

    MPC-Based Haptic Shared Steering System: A Driver Modeling Approach for Symbiotic Driving

    Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) aim to increase safety and reduce mental workload. However, the gap in the understanding of the closed-loop driver-vehicle interaction often leads to reduced user acceptance. In this study, an optimal torque control law is calculated online in the Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework to guarantee continuous guidance during the steering task. The research contribution is in the integration of an extensive prediction model covering cognitive behaviour, neuromuscular dynamics, and the vehicle- steering dynamics, within the MPC-based haptic controller to enhance collaboration. The driver model is composed of a preview cognitive strategy based on a Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian, sensory organs, and neuromuscular dynamics, including muscle co-activation and reflex action. Moreover, an adaptive cost-function algorithm enables dynamic allocation of the control authority. Experiments were performed in a fixed-base driving simulator at Toyota Motor Europe involving 19 participants to evaluate the proposed controller with two different cost functions against a commercial Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system as an industry benchmark. The results demonstrate the proposed controller fosters symbiotic driving and reduces driver-vehicle conflicts with respect to a state-of-the-art commercial system, both subjectively and objectively, while still improving path-tracking performance. Summarising, this study tackles the need to blend human and ADAS control, demonstrating the validity of the proposed strategy

    Steering control for haptic feedback and active safety functions

    Steering feedback is an important element that defines driver–vehicle interaction. It strongly affects driving performance and is primarily dependent on the steering actuator\u27s control strategy. Typically, the control method is open loop, that is without any reference tracking; and its drawbacks are hardware dependent steering feedback response and attenuated driver–environment transparency. This thesis investigates a closed-loop control method for electric power assisted steering and steer-by-wire systems. The advantages of this method, compared to open loop, are better hardware impedance compensation, system independent response, explicit transparency control and direct interface to active safety functions.The closed-loop architecture, outlined in this thesis, includes a reference model, a feedback controller and a disturbance observer. The feedback controller forms the inner loop and it ensures: reference tracking, hardware impedance compensation and robustness against the coupling uncertainties. Two different causalities are studied: torque and position control. The two are objectively compared from the perspective of (uncoupled and coupled) stability, tracking performance, robustness, and transparency.The reference model forms the outer loop and defines a torque or position reference variable, depending on the causality. Different haptic feedback functions are implemented to control the following parameters: inertia, damping, Coulomb friction and transparency. Transparency control in this application is particularly novel, which is sequentially achieved. For non-transparent steering feedback, an environment model is developed such that the reference variable is a function of virtual dynamics. Consequently, the driver–steering interaction is independent from the actual environment. Whereas, for the driver–environment transparency, the environment interaction is estimated using an observer; and then the estimated signal is fed back to the reference model. Furthermore, an optimization-based transparency algorithm is proposed. This renders the closed-loop system transparent in case of environmental uncertainty, even if the initial condition is non-transparent.The steering related active safety functions can be directly realized using the closed-loop steering feedback controller. This implies, but is not limited to, an angle overlay from the vehicle motion control functions and a torque overlay from the haptic support functions.Throughout the thesis, both experimental and the theoretical findings are corroborated. This includes a real-time implementation of the torque and position control strategies. In general, it can be concluded that position control lacks performance and robustness due to high and/or varying system inertia. Though the problem is somewhat mitigated by a robust H-infinity controller, the high frequency haptic performance remains compromised.     From the Concept of Being “the Boss” to the Idea of Being “a Team”: The Adaptive Co-Pilot as the Enabler for a New Cooperative Framework

    The “classical” SAE LoA for automated driving can present several drawbacks, and the SAE-L2 and SAE-L3, in particular, can lead to the so-called “irony of automation”, where the driver is substituted by the artificial system, but is still regarded as a “supervisor” or as a “fallback mechanism”. To overcome this problem, while taking advantage of the latest technology, we regard both human and machine as members of a unique team that share the driving task. Depending on the available resources (in terms of driver’s status, system state, and environment conditions) and considering that they are very dynamic, an adaptive assignment of authority for each member of the team is needed. This is achieved by designing a technology enabler, constituted by the intelligent and adaptive co-pilot. It comprises (1) a lateral shared controller based on NMPC, which applies the authority, (2) an arbitration module based on FIS, which calculates the authority, and (3) a visual HMI, as an enabler of trust in automation decisions and actions. The benefits of such a system are shown in this paper through a comparison of the shared control driving mode, with manual driving (as a baseline) and lane-keeping and lane-centering (as two commercial ADAS). Tests are performed in a use case where support for a distracted driver is given. Quantitative and qualitative results confirm the hypothesis that shared control offers the best balance between performance, safety, and comfort during the driving task.This research was supported by the ECSEL Joint-Undertaking,which funded the PRYSTINE project under the Grant 783190

The development of electric vehicles and the improvement of their functionalities are key elements in this strategy. As a result, there is a need for further research in emission reduction, efficiency improvement, or dynamic handling approaches. In order to achieve these objectives, the development of suitable Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) is required. Although traditional control techniques have been widely used for ADAS implementation, the complexity of electric multimotor powertrains makes intelligent control approaches appropriate for these cases. In this work, a novel intelligent Torque Vectoring (TV) system, composed of a neuro-fuzzy vertical tire forces estimator and a fuzzy yaw moment controller, is proposed, which allows enhancing the dynamic behaviour of electric multimotor vehicles. The proposed approach is compared with traditional strategies using the high fidelity vehicle dynamics simulator Dynacar. Results show that the proposed intelligent Torque Vectoring system is able to increase the efficiency of the vehicle by 10%, thanks to the optimal torque distribution and the use of a neuro-fuzzy vertical tire forces estimator which provides 3 times more accurate estimations than analytical approaches.The research leading to these results has been supported by the ECSEL Joint Undertaking under Grant agreement no. 662192 (3Ccar).This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and the ECSEL member states

    Safe and seamless transfer of control authority - exploring haptic shared control during handovers

    This research aimed at investigating the impact of lateral assistance systems on drivers' performance and behaviour during transitions from Highly Automated Driving (HAD). The thesis focused on non-critical transitions and analysed the differences between system and user-initiated transitions. Hence, two experiments were developed and conducted in driving simulators to address questions relating to how handover procedures, which provide varying levels of lateral assistance, affect drivers' performance and behaviour at different stages of the transition. In particular, it was investigated which type of assistance yields better results depending on who initiated the transition of control. Drivers were induced to be Out-Of-The-Loop (OOTL) during periods of HAD and then exposed to both system and user-initiated transitions. Results showed that after user-initiated transitions, drivers were generally more engaged with the steering task and the provided assistance was not helpful and, in some cases, caused steering conflicts and a comfort drop. On the contrary, after system-initiated transitions, drivers were not engaged with the steering control and were more prone to gaze wandering. Strong lateral assistance proved to be most beneficial within the first 5 seconds of the transition, when drivers were not committed to the steering control. The provision of assistance at an operational level, namely when drivers had to keep the lane centre, was not enough to ensure good performance at a tactical level. Drivers were able to cope with tactical tasks, presented as lane changes, only after around 10 seconds from the start of the transitions in both user and system initiated cases (Chapter 3 and Chapter 4). The introduction of non-continuous lateral assistance, used to trigger steering conflicts and, in turn, a faster steering engagement, did not yield particular benefits during user-initiated transitions but it might have triggered a faster re-engagement process in system-initiated ones (Chapter 5). The results suggest that assisting drivers after user-initiated transitions is not advisable as the assistance might induce steering conflicts. On the contrary, it is extremely beneficial to assist drivers during system-initiated transitions because of their low engagement with the driving task. The thesis concludes with a general overview of the conducted studies and a discussion on future studies to take this research forward

    Force sensors for active safety, stability enhancement and lightweight construction of road vehicles

    Force and moment measurement at different locations within road vehicles is a multifaceted, comprehensive and forthcoming technology that might play a breakthrough role in automotive engineering. The paper aims to describe why such technology seems so promising. A literature review is accomplished on which forces can be measured and what can be obtained with force and moment data. Additionally, attention is devoted to where–and how–force and moments can be measured effectively. Force and moment measurement technology is also studied with an historical perspective, briefly analysing the past applications. Active safety systems (ADAS up to full automated driving) and automotive stability enhancement systems are expected to be impacted by the measurement of forces and moments at the wheels. Friction potential evaluation and driver model development and monitoring have been–and are expected to be–major field of research. Force and moment measurement technology may also be exploited for lightweight construction purposes with remarkable synergistic effects with active safety and stability enhancement systems. Possible innovations on lightweight construction and sustainable mobility are to be expected thanks to force and moment measurement

    Torque Vectoring Predictive Control of a Four In-Wheel Motor Drive Electric Vehicle

    The recent integration of vehicles with electrified powertrains in the automotive sector provides higher energy efficiency, lower pollution levels and increased controllability. These features have led to an increasing interest in the development of Advanced Driver- Assistance Systems (ADAS) that enhance not only the vehicle dynamic behaviour, but also its efficiency and energy consumption. This master’s thesis presents some contributions to the vehicle modeling, parameter estimation, model predictive control and reference generation applied to electric vehicles, paying particular attention to both model and controller validation, leveraging offline simulations and a real-time driving simulator. The objective of this project is focused on the Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) technique developing torque distribution strategies, specifically Torque Vectoring (TV) for a four-in wheel motor drive electric vehicle. A real-time TV-NMPC algorithm will be implemented, which maximizes the wheels torque usage and distribution to enhance vehicle stability and improve handling capabilities. In order to develop this control system, throughout this thesis the whole process carried out including the implementation requirements and considerations are described in detail. As the NMPC is a model-based approach, a nonlinear vehicle model is proposed. The vehicle model, the estimated parameters and the controller will be validated through the design of open and closed loop driving maneuvers for offline simulations performed in a simulation plant (VI-CarRealTime) and by means of a real-time driving simulator (VI-Grade Compact Simulator) to test the vehicle performance through various dynamic driving conditions
