    Cooperative Control and Potential Games

    We present a view of cooperative control using the language of learning in games. We review the game-theoretic concepts of potential and weakly acyclic games, and demonstrate how several cooperative control problems, such as consensus and dynamic sensor coverage, can be formulated in these settings. Motivated by this connection, we build upon game-theoretic concepts to better accommodate a broader class of cooperative control problems. In particular, we extend existing learning algorithms to accommodate restricted action sets caused by the limitations of agent capabilities and group based decision making. Furthermore, we also introduce a new class of games called sometimes weakly acyclic games for time-varying objective functions and action sets, and provide distributed algorithms for convergence to an equilibrium

    A cooperative control approach between human and robot takes an important role to carry out various tasks in hazardous environments or space. In this case, a robot is operated based on the cooperation between direct human control and autonomous robot control. In this study, a neural network is introduced for cooperating process between human control and robot control in order to optimize the degree of cooperation of human and robot. The degree of participation of human operator into the control is determined based on a reference cooperative model which expresses desired human and robot cooperative form. The experiment has executed the contacting tasks for the various object walls using a two-degrees of freedom Cartesian robot.     Information flow and cooperative control of vehicle formations

    We consider the problem of cooperation among a collection of vehicles performing a shared task using intervehicle communication to coordinate their actions. Tools from algebraic graph theory prove useful in modeling the communication network and relating its topology to formation stability. We prove a Nyquist criterion that uses the eigenvalues of the graph Laplacian matrix to determine the effect of the communication topology on formation stability. We also propose a method for decentralized information exchange between vehicles. This approach realizes a dynamical system that supplies each vehicle with a common reference to be used for cooperative motion. We prove a separation principle that decomposes formation stability into two components: Stability of this is achieved information flow for the given graph and stability of an individual vehicle for the given controller. The information flow can thus be rendered highly robust to changes in the graph, enabling tight formation control despite limitations in intervehicle communication capability

    A Decomposition Approach to Multi-Vehicle Cooperative Control

    We present methods that generate cooperative strategies for multi-vehicle control problems using a decomposition approach. By introducing a set of tasks to be completed by the team of vehicles and a task execution method for each vehicle, we decomposed the problem into a combinatorial component and a continuous component. The continuous component of the problem is captured by task execution, and the combinatorial component is captured by task assignment. In this paper, we present a solver for task assignment that generates near-optimal assignments quickly and can be used in real-time applications. To motivate our methods, we apply them to an adversarial game between two teams of vehicles. One team is governed by simple rules and the other by our algorithms. In our study of this game we found phase transitions, showing that the task assignment problem is most difficult to solve when the capabilities of the adversaries are comparable. Finally, we implement our algorithms in a multi-level architecture with a variable replanning rate at each level to provide feedback on a dynamically changing and uncertain environment.Comment: 36 pages, 19 figures, for associated web page see http://control.mae.cornell.edu/earl/decom

    Optimal cooperative control synthesis of active displays

    A technique is developed that is intended to provide a systematic approach to synthesizing display augmentation for optimal manual control in complex, closed-loop tasks. A cooperative control synthesis technique, previously developed to design pilot-optimal control augmentation for the plant, is extended to incorporate the simultaneous design of performance enhancing displays. The technique utilizes an optimal control model of the man in the loop. It is applied to the design of a quickening control law for a display and a simple K/s(2) plant, and then to an F-15 type aircraft in a multi-channel task. Utilizing the closed loop modeling and analysis procedures, the results from the display design algorithm are evaluated and an analytical validation is performed. Experimental validation is recommended for future efforts

    QoE-centric management of multimedia networks through cooperative control loops

    The Internet has evolved from a service to transport simple text files into a platform for transporting a variety of complex multimedia services. The initial centralized management systems were not designed and are therefore not able to perform efficient management of Quality of Experience (QoE) for these complex services. Deploying an autonomic management system resolves these complexity issues and allows efficient resource allocation based on the service type, end-user requirements and device characteristics. However, existing autonomic management systems only allow limited cooperation between different autonomic elements (AE), which limits their capabilities to provide end-to-end QoE assurance. This research will therefore design cooperative AEs, optimize their organization and provide cooperative allocation algorithms to optimize end-to-end QoE

    Bio-Inspired Adaptive Cooperative Control of Heterogeneous Robotic Networks

    We introduce a new adaptive cooperative control strategy for robotic networks comprised of heterogeneous members. The proposed feedback synchronization exploits an active parameter adaptation strategy as opposed to adaptive parameter estimation of adaptive control theory. Multiple heterogeneous robots or vehicles can coordinate their motions by parameter adaptation analogous to bio-genetic mutation and adaptation. In contrast with fixed gains used by consensus theory, both the tracking control and diffusive coupling gains are automatically computed based on the adaptation law, the synchronization errors, and the tracking errors of heterogeneous robots. The optimality of the proposed adaptive cooperative control is studied via inverse optimal control theory. The proposed adaptive cooperative control can be applied to any network structure. The stability proof, by using a relatively new nonlinear stability tool, contraction theory, shows globally asymptotically synchronized motion of a heterogeneous robotic network. This adaptive cooperative control can be widely applied to cooperative control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), formation flying spacecraft, and multi-robot systems. Results of the simulation show the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive cooperative control laws especially for a network comprised of heterogeneous members
