    Convergence and Optimal Buffer Sizing for Window Based AIMD Congestion Control

    We study the interaction between the AIMD (Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease) congestion control and a bottleneck router with Drop Tail buffer. We consider the problem in the framework of deterministic hybrid models. First, we show that the hybrid model of the interaction between the AIMD congestion control and bottleneck router always converges to a cyclic behavior. We characterize the cycles. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the absence of multiple jumps of congestion window in the same cycle are obtained. Then, we propose an analytical framework for the optimal choice of the router buffer size. We formulate the problem of the optimal router buffer size as a multi-criteria optimization problem, in which the Lagrange function corresponds to a linear combination of the average goodput and the average delay in the queue. The solution to the optimization problem provides further evidence that the buffer size should be reduced in the presence of traffic aggregation. Our analytical results are confirmed by simulations performed with Simulink and the NS simulator

    Model based analysis of some high speed network issues

    The study of complex problems in science and engineering today typically involves large scale data, huge number of large-scale scientific breakthroughs critically depends on large multi-disciplinary and geographically-dispersed research teams, where the high speed network becomes the integral part. To serve the ongoing bandwidth requirement and scalability of these networks, there has been a continuous evolution of different TCPs for high speed networks. Testing these protocols on a real network would be expensive, time consuming and more over not easily available to the researchers worldwide. Network simulation is well accepted and widely used method for performance evaluation, it is well known that packet-based simulators like NS2 and Opnet are not adequate in high speed also in large scale networks because of its inherent bottlenecks in terms of message overhead and execution time. In that case model based approach with the help of a set of coupled differential equations is preferred for simulations. This dissertation is focused on the key challenges on research and development of TCPs on high-speed network. To address these issues/challenges this thesis has three objectives: design an analytical simulation methodology; model behaviors of high speed networks and other components including TCP flows and queue using the analytical simulation method; analyze them and explore impacts and interrelationship among them. To decrease the simulation time and speed up the process of testing and development of high speed TCP, we present a scalable simulation methodology for high speed network. We present the fluid model equations for various high-speed TCP variants. With the help of these fluid model equations, the behavior of high-speed TCP variants under various scenarios and its effect on queue size variations are presented. High speed network is not feasible unless we understand effect of bottleneck buffer size on performance of these high-speed TCP variants. A fluid model is introduced to accommodate the new observations of synchronization and de-synchronization phenomena of packet losses at bottleneck link and a microscopic analysis is presented on different buffer sizes at drop-tail queuing scheme. The proposed model based methods promotes principal understanding of the future heterogeneous networks and accelerates protocol developments

    Study on the Performance of TCP over 10Gbps High Speed Networks

    Internet traffic is expected to grow phenomenally over the next five to ten years. To cope with such large traffic volumes, high-speed networks are expected to scale to capacities of terabits-per-second and beyond. Increasing the role of optics for packet forwarding and transmission inside the high-speed networks seems to be the most promising way to accomplish this capacity scaling. Unfortunately, unlike electronic memory, it remains a formidable challenge to build even a few dozen packets of integrated all-optical buffers. On the other hand, many high-speed networks depend on the TCP/IP protocol for reliability which is typically implemented in software and is sensitive to buffer size. For example, TCP requires a buffer size of bandwidth delay product in switches/routers to maintain nearly 100\% link utilization. Otherwise, the performance will be much downgraded. But such large buffer will challenge hardware design and power consumption, and will generate queuing delay and jitter which again cause problems. Therefore, improve TCP performance over tiny buffered high-speed networks is a top priority. This dissertation studies the TCP performance in 10Gbps high-speed networks. First, a 10Gbps reconfigurable optical networking testbed is developed as a research environment. Second, a 10Gbps traffic sniffing tool is developed for measuring and analyzing TCP performance. New expressions for evaluating TCP loss synchronization are presented by carefully examining the congestion events of TCP. Based on observation, two basic reasons that cause performance problems are studied. We find that minimize TCP loss synchronization and reduce flow burstiness impact are critical keys to improve TCP performance in tiny buffered networks. Finally, we present a new TCP protocol called Multi-Channel TCP and a new congestion control algorithm called Desynchronized Multi-Channel TCP (DMCTCP). Our algorithm implementation takes advantage of a potential parallelism from the Multi-Path TCP in Linux. Over an emulated 10Gbps network ruled by routers with only a few dozen packets of buffers, our experimental results confirm that bottleneck link utilization can be much better improved by DMCTCP than by many other TCP variants. Our study is a new step towards the deployment of optical packet switching/routing networks

    Stable and scalable congestion control for high-speed heterogeneous networks

    For any congestion control mechanisms, the most fundamental design objectives are stability and scalability. However, achieving both properties are very challenging in such a heterogeneous environment as the Internet. From the end-users' perspective, heterogeneity is due to the fact that different flows have different routing paths and therefore different communication delays, which can significantly affect stability of the entire system. In this work, we successfully address this problem by first proving a sufficient and necessary condition for a system to be stable under arbitrary delay. Utilizing this result, we design a series of practical congestion control protocols (MKC and JetMax) that achieve stability regardless of delay as well as many additional appealing properties. From the routers' perspective, the system is heterogeneous because the incoming traffic is a mixture of short- and long-lived, TCP and non-TCP flows. This imposes a severe challenge on traditional buffer sizing mechanisms, which are derived using the simplistic model of a single or multiple synchronized long-lived TCP flows. To overcome this problem, we take a control-theoretic approach and design a new intelligent buffer sizing scheme called Adaptive Buffer Sizing (ABS), which based on the current incoming traffic, dynamically sets the optimal buffer size under the target performance constraints. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that ABS exhibits quick responses to changes of traffic load, scalability to a large number of incoming flows, and robustness to generic Internet traffic

Following that, we consider the problem of the optimal buffer sizing in the framework of multi-criteria optimization in which the Lagrange function corresponds to a linear combination of the average throughput and the average delay in the queue.     Networking Mechanisms for Delay-Sensitive Applications

    The diversity of applications served by the explosively growing Internet is increasing. In particular, applications that are sensitive to end-to-end packet delays become more common and include telephony, video conferencing, and networked games. While the single best-effort service of the current Internet favors throughput-greedy traffic by equipping congested links with large buffers, long queuing at the congested links hurts the delay-sensitive applications. Furthermore, while numerous alternative architectures have been proposed to offer diverse network services, the innovative alternatives failed to gain widespread end-to-end deployment. This dissertation explores different networking mechanisms for supporting low queueing delay required by delay-sensitive applications. In particular, it considers two different approaches. The first one assumes employing congestion control protocols for the traffic generated by the considered class of applications. The second approach relies on the router operation only and does not require support from end hosts

    Analysis of Multiple Flows using Different High Speed TCP protocols on a General Network

    We develop analytical tools for performance analysis of multiple TCP flows (which could be using TCP CUBIC, TCP Compound, TCP New Reno) passing through a multi-hop network. We first compute average window size for a single TCP connection (using CUBIC or Compound TCP) under random losses. We then consider two techniques to compute steady state throughput for different TCP flows in a multi-hop network. In the first technique, we approximate the queues as M/G/1 queues. In the second technique, we use an optimization program whose solution approximates the steady state throughput of the different flows.     Router-based algorithms for improving internet quality of service.

    We begin this thesis by generalizing some results related to a recently proposed positive system model of TCP congestion control algorithms. Then, motivated by a mean ¯eld analysis of the positive system model, a novel, stateless, queue management scheme is designed: Multi-Level Comparisons with index l (MLC(l)). In the limit, MLC(l) enforces max-min fairness in a network of TCP flows. We go further, showing that counting past drops at a congested link provides su±cient information to enforce max-min fairness among long-lived flows and to reduce the flow completion times of short-lived flows. Analytical models are presented, and the accuracy of predictions are validated by packet level ns2 simulations. We then move our attention to e±cient measurement and monitoring techniques. A small active counter architecture is presented that addresses the problem of accurate approximation of statistics counter values at very-high speeds that can be both updated and estimated on a per-packet basis. These algorithms are necessary in the design of router-based flow control algorithms since on-chip Static RAM (SRAM) currently is a scarce resource, and being economical with its usage is an important task. A highly scalable method for heavy-hitter identifcation that uses our small active counters architecture is developed based on heuristic argument. Its performance is compared to several state-of-the-art algorithms and shown to out-perform them. In the last part of the thesis we discuss the delay-utilization tradeoff in the congested Internet links. While several groups of authors have recently analyzed this tradeoff, the lack of realistic assumption in their models and the extreme complexity in estimation of model parameters, reduces their applicability at real Internet links. We propose an adaptive scheme that regulates the available queue space to keep utilization at desired, high, level. As a consequence, in large-number-of-users regimes, sacrifcing 1-2% of bandwidth can result in queueing delays that are an order of magnitude smaller than in the standard BDP-bu®ering case. We go further and introduce an optimization framework for describing the problem of interest and propose an online algorithm for solving it
