    Future state maximisation as an intrinsic motivation for decision making

    The concept of an ā€œintrinsic motivation" is used in the psychology literature to distinguish between behaviour which is motivated by the expectation of an immediate, quantifiable reward (ā€œextrinsic motivation") and behaviour which arises because it is inherently useful, interesting or enjoyable. Examples of the latter can include curiosity driven behaviour such as exploration and the accumulation of knowledge, as well as developing skills that might not be immediately useful but that have the potential to be re-used in a variety of different future situations. In this thesis, we examine a candidate for an intrinsic motivation with wide-ranging applicability which we refer to as ā€œfuture state maximisation". Loosely speaking this is the idea that, taking everything else to be equal, decisions should be made so as to maximally keep one's options open, or to give the maximal amount of control over what one can potentially do in the future. Our goal is to study how this principle can be applied in a quantitative manner, as well as identifying examples of systems where doing so could be useful in either explaining or generating behaviour. We consider a number of examples, however our primary application is to a model of collective motion in which we consider a group of agents equipped with simple visual sensors, moving around in two dimensions. In this model, agents aim to make decisions about how to move so as to maximise the amount of control they have over the potential visual states that they can access in the future. We find that with each agent following this simple, low-level motivational principle a swarm spontaneously emerges in which the agents exhibit rich collective behaviour, remaining cohesive and highly-aligned. Remarkably, the emergent swarm also shares a number of features which are observed in real flocks of starlings, including scale free correlations and marginal opacity. We go on to explore how the model can be developed to allow us to manipulate and control the swarm, as well as looking at heuristics which are able to mimic future state maximisation whilst requiring significantly less computation, and so which could plausibly operate under animal cognition

    Scale-Invariant Specifications for Human-Swarm Systems

    We present a method for controlling a swarm using its spectral decomposition -- that is, by describing the set of trajectories of a swarm in terms of a spatial distribution throughout the operational domain -- guaranteeing scale invariance with respect to the number of agents both for computation and for the operator tasked with controlling the swarm. We use ergodic control, decentralized across the network, for implementation. In the DARPA OFFSET program field setting, we test this interface design for the operator using the STOMP interface -- the same interface used by Raytheon BBN throughout the duration of the OFFSET program. In these tests, we demonstrate that our approach is scale-invariant -- the user specification does not depend on the number of agents; it is persistent -- the specification remains active until the user specifies a new command; and it is real-time -- the user can interact with and interrupt the swarm at any time. Moreover, we show that the spectral/ergodic specification of swarm behavior degrades gracefully as the number of agents goes down, enabling the operator to maintain the same approach as agents become disabled or are added to the network. We demonstrate the scale-invariance and dynamic response of our system in a field relevant simulator on a variety of tactical scenarios with up to 50 agents. We also demonstrate the dynamic response of our system in the field with a smaller team of agents.     To boldly go:an occam-Ļ€ mission to engineer emergence

    Future systems will be too complex to design and implement explicitly. Instead, we will have to learn to engineer complex behaviours indirectly: through the discovery and application of local rules of behaviour, applied to simple process components, from which desired behaviours predictably emerge through dynamic interactions between massive numbers of instances. This paper describes a process-oriented architecture for fine-grained concurrent systems that enables experiments with such indirect engineering. Examples are presented showing the differing complex behaviours that can arise from minor (non-linear) adjustments to low-level parameters, the difficulties in suppressing the emergence of unwanted (bad) behaviour, the unexpected relationships between apparently unrelated physical phenomena (shown up by their separate emergence from the same primordial process swamp) and the ability to explore and engineer completely new physics (such as force fields) by their emergence from low-level process interactions whose mechanisms can only be imagined, but not built, at the current time

    An OpenEaagles Framework Extension for Hardware-in-the-Loop Swarm Simulation

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm applications, algorithms, and control strategies have experienced steady growth and development over the past 15 years. Yet, to this day, most swarm development efforts have gone untested and thus unimplemented. Cost of aircraft systems, government imposed airspace restrictions, and the lack of adequate modeling and simulation tools are some of the major inhibitors to successful swarm implementation. This thesis examines how the OpenEaagles simulation framework can be extended to bridge this gap. This research aims to utilize Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation to provide developers a functional capability to develop and test the behaviors of scalable and modular swarms of autonomous UAVs in simulation with high confidence that these behaviors will prop- agate to real/live ight tests. Demonstrations show the framework enhances and simplifies swarm development through encapsulation, possesses high modularity, pro- vides realistic aircraft modeling, and is capable of simultaneously accommodating four hardware-piloted swarming UAVs during HIL simulation or 64 swarming UAVs during pure simulation

    Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for firefghters. The large dimensions together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The Guardians robot swarm is designed to assist fire fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this report we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots searching and assisting fire fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms which provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also one of the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus the robot swarm is able to locate itself and provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the re ghters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm based information to human beings

    Quantifying Robotic Swarm Coverage

    In the field of swarm robotics, the design and implementation of spatial density control laws has received much attention, with less emphasis being placed on performance evaluation. This work fills that gap by introducing an error metric that provides a quantitative measure of coverage for use with any control scheme. The proposed error metric is continuously sensitive to changes in the swarm distribution, unlike commonly used discretization methods. We analyze the theoretical and computational properties of the error metric and propose two benchmarks to which error metric values can be compared. The first uses the realizable extrema of the error metric to compute the relative error of an observed swarm distribution. We also show that the error metric extrema can be used to help choose the swarm size and effective radius of each robot required to achieve a desired level of coverage. The second benchmark compares the observed distribution of error metric values to the probability density function of the error metric when robot positions are randomly sampled from the target distribution. We demonstrate the utility of this benchmark in assessing the performance of stochastic control algorithms. We prove that the error metric obeys a central limit theorem, develop a streamlined method for performing computations, and place the standard statistical tests used here on a firm theoretical footing.
