    Controller Strategy for Open-Winding Brushless Doubly-Fed Wind Power Generator with Common Mode Voltage Elimination

    This paper presents the theoretical derivation and implementation of a novel direct power control for open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG). As one of the promising brushless candidates, the OW-BDFRG is characterized with two stator windings fed by a dual controllable two-level three-phase converters through a common DC bus with common mode voltage elimination. The parameter-free control strategy is designed to obtain maximum power point tracking with variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) for wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). Compared to the traditional three-level converter systems, the DC bus voltage, AC-side voltage and capacity ratings of the proposed converter system are notably high while the reliability, redundancy and fault tolerance are significantly improved. Effectiveness, correctness and robustness of the proposed control strategy and the common mode voltage elimination scheme are evaluated and confirmed through simulation and experimental tests on a 42 kW generator prototype typical for VSCF-WECS

    A new direct power control (DPC) strategy for open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generators (BDFRGs) with variable speed constant frequency is proposed. The control winding is open-circuited and fed by dual traditional two-level three phase converters using a common DC bus, and the DPC strategy aiming at maximum power point tracking and common mode voltage elimination is designed. Compared to the traditional three-level converter systems, the DC bus voltage, the voltage rating of power devices and capacity of the single two-level converter are all reduced by 50% while the reliability, redundancy and fault tolerance of the proposed system still greatly improved. Consequently its effectiveness is evaluated by simulation tests on a 42 kW prototype generator in MATLAB/SIMULINK

The Brushless Doubly-Fed Reluctance Machine (BDFRM) has been widely investigated in numerous research studies since it is brushless and cageless and there is no winding on the rotor of this emerging machine. This feature leads to several advantages for this machine in comparison with its induction counterpart, i.e., Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (BDFIM). Less maintenance, less power losses, and also more reliability are the major advantages of BDFRM compared to BDFIM. The design complexity of its reluctance rotor, as well as flux patterns for indirect connection between the two windings mounted on the stator including power winding and control winding, have restricted the development of this machine technology. In the literature, there is not a comprehensive review of the research studies related to BDFRM. In this paper, the previous research studies are reviewed from different points of view, such as operation, design, control, transient model, dynamic model, power factor, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), and losses. It is revealed that the BDFRM is still evolving since the theoretical results have shown that this machine operates efficiently if it is well-designed

    Optimised Power Error Comparison Strategy for Direct Power Control of the Open-winding Brushless Doubly-Fed Wind Power Generator

    This paper presents the conceptual analysis and comparative simulation and experimental evaluation of a novel power error comparison direct power control (PEC-DPC) strategy of the open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) for wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). As one of the promising candidates for limited speed range application of pump-alike and wind turbine with partially-rated converter. The emerging OW-BDFRG employed for the proposed PEC-DPC is fed via dual low-cost two-level converters, while the DPC concept is derived from the fundamental dynamic analyses between the calculated and controllable electrical power and flux of the BDFRG with two stators measurable voltage and current. Compared to the traditional two-level and three-level converter systems, the OW-BDFRG requires lower rated capacity of power devices and switching frequency converter, though have more flexible switching mode, higher reliability, redundancy and fault tolerance capability. The performance correctness and effectiveness of the proposed DPC strategy with the selected and optimised switching vector scheme are evaluated and confirmed through computer simulation studies and experimental measurements on a 25 kW generator test rig

    Dynamic Modeling and Control of BDFRG under Unbalanced Grid Conditions

    The Brushless Doubly-Fed Reluctance Generator (BDFRG) is a potential alternative to the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) in wind power applications owing to its reasonable cost, competitive performance, and high reliability. In comparison with the Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG), the BDFRG is more efficient and easier to control owing to the cage-less rotor. One of the most preferable advantages of BDFRG over DFIG is the inherently better performance under unbalanced grid conditions. The study conducted in this paper showed that conventional vector control of the BDFRG results in excessive oscillations of the primary active/reactive power, electromagnetic torque, and primary/secondary currents in this case. In order to address such limitations, this paper presented a new control strategy for the unbalanced operation of BDFRG-based wind generation systems. A modified vector control scheme was proposed with the capability to control the positive and the negative sequences of the secondary currents independently, thus greatly reducing the adverse implications of the unbalanced supply. The controller performance has been validated by simulations using a 1.5 MW BDFRG dynamical model built upon the positive and negative sequence equations. The main benefits of the new control strategy are quantified in comparison with conventional PI current control design

    Improved vector control methods for brushless double fed induction generator during inductive load and fault conditions

    A Brushless Double-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) has shown tremendous success in wind turbines due to its robust brushless design, less maintenance, smooth operation, and variable speed characteristics. These generators are composed of two back-to-back voltage source converters, a Grid Side Converter (GSC) and a Rotor Side Converter (RSC). Existing control techniques use a “trial and error” method that results in a poor dynamic response in machine parameters during the absence of load. The RSC control is used for reactive current control during the inductive load insertion. However, it is more suitable for stabilizing steady-state behaviour, but it suffers from slow response and introduces a double fundamental frequency component to the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) voltage. In addition, generally, a Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) fault is detected using a hysteresis comparison of the power winding voltage. The LVRT capability is provided by using fixed reference values to control the winding current. This approach results in an erroneous response, sub-optimal control of voltage drops at PCC, and false alarms during transient conditions. This thesis aims to solve the mentioned issues by using an improved vector control method. Internal Model Control (IMC) based Proportional-Integral (PI) gains calculation is used for GSC and RSC. These are controlled to enhance the transient response and power quality during no-load, inductive load, and fault conditions. Firstly, a GSC-based vector control method is proposed to suppress the PCC voltage fluctuations when a large inductive load is suddenly connected. The proposed technique is based on an analytical model of the transient behaviour of the voltage drop at the PCC. To block a double fundamental frequency component as a result of reactive current compensation, a notch filter is designed. Secondly, an RSC-based vector control method is proposed using an analytical model of the voltage drop caused by a short circuit. Moreover, using a fuzzy logic controller, the proposed technique employs the voltage frequency in addition to the power winding voltage magnitude to detect LVRT conditions. The analytical model helps in reducing the power winding voltage drop while the fuzzy logic controller leads to better response and faster detection of faults. However, the reference value for reactive current compensation is analysed using an analytical model of the voltage drop at the PCC in the event of a short-circuit fault. The results obtained from MATLAB/Simulink show that the GSC-based vector control method technique can effectively reduce about 10% voltage drop at PCCs. Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) is improved to 22.3% by notch filter in comparison with an existing technique such as instantaneous reactive power theory. The RSC-based vector control method can achieve up to 11% voltage drop reduction and improve the THD by 12% compared to recent synchronous control and flux tracking methods

    Performance comparisons of doubly-fed machines

    This research project aims at evaluating a conversion system based on the emerging Brushless Doubly Fed Reluctance Machine (BDFRM) through a comparative experimental study with a traditional and well established slip-ring counterpart, the Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM). One of the main objectives is to establish whether this alternative machine is worthy of industrial consideration in variable speed applications with limited speed ranges (e.g. wind turbines, pump-like drives etc.) in terms of control, reliability, efficiency and power factor performance as major criteria. Such kind of work has not been reported in the open-literature to date and represents the main contribution of the project being undertaken. A conventional and widely used parameter-independent vector control (VC) scheme has been selected for the operation of both the machines using a shaft-position sensor. The VC algorithm has been simulated and implemented in real-time on state-of-the-art eZdsp development platform based on the TMS320F28335 Digital Signal Controller (DSC). The control code has been derived from a programme written in C++ using the corresponding compiler, the Code Composer Studio (CCS). Comprehensive computer simulations have been done in Matlab/Simulink using the parameters obtained by off-line testing of the DFIM and BDFRM prototypes, which have been built in the same stator frame for comparison purposes. The simulation results have been experimentally verified on two identical test rigs where a commercial 4-quadrant cage induction machine V/f drive has been used as a prime mover or load for either the DFIM or the BDFRM subject to their operating mode. The preliminary experimental results on two small-scale prototypes have shown that the BDFRM can achieve competitive performance to the similarly rated DFIM and as such should warrant further investigation and increasing interests of both academic and industrial communities as a potential large-scale wind generator or a pump drive

    Comparison of doubly-fed induction generator and brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator for wind energy applications

    Phd ThesisThe Doubly-fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is the dominant technology for variable-speed wind power generation due in part to its cost-effective partially-rated power converter. However, the maintenance requirements and potential failure of brushes and slip rings is a significant disadvantage of DFIG. This has led to increased interest in brushless doubly-fed generators. In this thesis a Brushless Doubly-Fed Reluctance Generator (BDFRG) is compared with DFIG from a control performance point of view. To compare the performance of the two generators a flexible 7.5kW test facility has been constructed. Initially, a classical cascade vector controller is applied to both generators. This controller is based on the stator voltage field orientation method with an inner rotor (secondary stator) current control loop and an outer active and reactive power control loop. The dynamic and steady state performance of two generators are examined experimentally. The results confirm that the BDFRG has a slower dynamic response when compared to the DFIG due to the larger and variable inductance. Finally a sensorless Direct Power Control (DPC) scheme is applied to both the DFIG and BDFRG.
