Fuzzy Human Reliability Analysis: Applications and Contributions Review

    Get PDF
The applications and contributions of fuzzy set theory to human reliability analysis (HRA) are reassessed. The main contribution of fuzzy mathematics relies on its ability to represent vague information. Many HRA authors have made contributions developing new models, introducing fuzzy quantification methodologies. Conversely, others have drawn on fuzzy techniques or methodologies for quantifying already existing models. Fuzzy contributions improve HRA in five main aspects: (1) uncertainty treatment, (2) expert judgment data treatment, (3) fuzzy fault trees, (4) performance shaping factors, and (5) human behaviour model. Finally, recent fuzzy applications and new trends in fuzzy HRA are herein discussed

Contributions to fuzzy polynomial techniques for stability analysis and control

The present thesis employs fuzzy-polynomial control techniques in order to improve the stability analysis and control of nonlinear systems. Initially, it reviews the more extended techniques in the field of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems, such as the more relevant results about polynomial and fuzzy polynomial systems. The basic framework uses fuzzy polynomial models by Taylor series and sum-of-squares techniques (semidefinite programming) in order to obtain stability guarantees. The contributions of the thesis are: ¿ Improved domain of attraction estimation of nonlinear systems for both continuous-time and discrete-time cases. An iterative methodology based on invariant-set results is presented for obtaining polynomial boundaries of such domain of attraction. ¿ Extension of the above problem to the case with bounded persistent disturbances acting. Different characterizations of inescapable sets with polynomial boundaries are determined. ¿ State estimation: extension of the previous results in literature to the case of fuzzy observers with polynomial gains, guaranteeing stability of the estimation error and inescapability in a subset of the zone where the model is valid. ¿ Proposal of a polynomial Lyapunov function with discrete delay in order to improve some polynomial control designs from literature. Preliminary extension to the fuzzy polynomial case. Last chapters present a preliminary experimental work in order to check and validate the theoretical results on real platforms in the future.Pitarch Pérez, JL. (2013). This thesis applies computational intelligence methodologies to study functional brain images. It is a state-of-the-art application relative to unsupervised learning domain to functional neuroimaging. There are also contributions related to computational intelligence on topics relative to clustering validation and spatio-temporal clustering analysis. Speci_cally, there are the presentation of a new separation measure based on fuzzy sets theory to establish the validity of the fuzzy clustering outcomes and the presentation of a framework to approach the parcellation of functional neuroimages taking in account both spatial and temporal patterns. These contributions have been applied to neuroimages obtained with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, using both active and passive paradigm and using both in-house data and fMRI repository. The results obtained shown, globally, an improvement on the quality of the neuroimaging analysis using the methodological contributions proposed

Fuzzy-rough set models and fuzzy-rough data reduction

Rough set theory is a powerful tool to analysis the information systems. Fuzzy rough set is introduced as a fuzzy generalization of rough sets. This paper reviewed the most important contributions to the rough set theory, fuzzy rough set theory and their applications. In many real world situations, some of the attribute values for an object may be in the set-valued form. In this paper, to handle this problem, we present a more general approach to the fuzzification of rough sets. Specially, we define a broad family of fuzzy rough sets. This paper presents a new development for the rough set theory by incorporating the classical rough set theory and the interval-valued fuzzy sets. The proposed methods are illustrated by an numerical example on the real case

The design and implementation of fuzzy query processing on sensor networks

Sensor nodes and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) enable observation of the physical world in unprecedented levels of granularity. A growing number of environmental monitoring applications are being designed to leverage data collection features of WSN, increasing the need for efficient data management techniques and for comparative analysis of various data management techniques. My research leverages aspects of fuzzy database, specifically fuzzy data representation and fuzzy or flexible queries to improve upon the efficiency of existing data management techniques by exploiting the inherent uncertainty of the data collected by WSN. Herein I present my research contributions. I provide classification of WSN middleware to illustrate varying approaches to data management for WSN and identify a need to better handle the uncertainty inherent in data collected from physical environments and to take advantage of the imprecision of the data to increase the efficiency of WSN by requiring less information be transmitted to adequately answer queries posed by WSN monitoring applications. In this dissertation, I present a novel approach to querying WSN, in which semantic knowledge about sensor attributes is represented as fuzzy terms. I present an enhanced simulation environment that supports more flexible and realistic analysis by using cellular automata models to separately model the deployed WSN and the underlying physical environment. Simulation experiments are used to evaluate my fuzzy query approach for environmental monitoring applications. My analysis shows that using fuzzy queries improves upon other data management techniques by reducing the amount of data that needs to be collected to accurately satisfy application requests. This reduction in data transmission results in increased battery life within sensors, an important measure of cost and performance for WSN applications

Small business strategic management practices and performance: A configurational approach

    Get PDF
Small businesses contribute to society on many fronts: job creation, tax revenues, functional products and services, charitable donations, technological developments, and social contributions to communities. Given these contributions, and small firms’ limited resources, it is important to understand what strategic management practices (SMPs)–activities engaged to develop and implement strategy–positively impact small firm performance. Small business leaders may apply various combinations of SMPs to achieve performance objectives. Here, we apply Fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to explore how various combinations of six different SMPs–entrepreneurial orientation (EO), strategic planning, goal setting, total quality management (TQM), social capital, and small business owners’ analysis of financial ratios–affect performance. From a sample of U.S. printing companies, we found four different configurations of SMPs related to higher small business performance

Membrane Fuzzy Sphere Dynamics in Plane-Wave Matrix Model

In plane-wave matrix model, the membrane fuzzy sphere extended in the SO(3) symmetric space is allowed to have periodic motion on a sub-plane in the SO(6) symmetric space. We consider a background configuration composed of two such fuzzy spheres moving on the same sub-plane and the one-loop quantum corrections to it. The one-loop effective action describing the fuzzy sphere interaction is computed up to the sub-leading order in the limit that the mean distance rr between two fuzzy spheres is very large. We show that the leading order interaction is of the 1/r^7 type and thus the membrane fuzzy spheres interpreted as giant gravitons really behave as gravitons.Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX2e, 1 figure, 1 tabl

The evaluation performance for commercial banks by intuitionistic fuzzy numbers: the case of Spain

    Get PDF
In a globalized world, the banking sector has been forced to advance not only in financial performance, but also in non-financial performance, especially in sustainability criteria. For this purpose, multicriteria decision methods are especially suited to evaluate efficiency and to make a stable ranking of the most outstanding banks in the Spanish financial system. However, we are aware of the difficulties involved due to the inherent uncertainty and subjectivity of this process. For this reason, the use of fuzzy models is proposed, especially intuitionistic fuzzy numbers combined with the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the TOPSIS. The combination of financial criteria based on the CAMELS rating system with non-financial sustainability criteria makes it possible to order the Spanish banking system based on global efficiency. The most relevant contributions are: first, the use of intuitionistic fuzzy numbers in the performance evaluation process, whereby the quality of the information available can be quantified; and the most important one, a simplification of the process in the implementation of the intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS. Finally, through a sensibility analysis, it is possible to isolate the relevance of the sustainability process to obtain the global performance evaluation
