This work has as purpose "contribute to the decrease of the consumption of water drinking to purposes that not so require". Its objectives are to design, develop and transfer a system not conventional for such purpose; to improve the health and conditions of habitability of sanitary spaces with sustainability. To such end, it proposes are: an strategy of "Participatory action research" as "a social practice of knowledge production that seeks social change seen as a totality, occurs in the very action and contributes to it?; a system that allows to replace the traditional toilet tank and reuse and store water used in toilets to be downloaded in nuclei sanitary toilets. With regard to the results achieved, the work has 2 stages that includes: 1. Developing the theoretical framework; the study of history and analysis of geographical areas of application; the generation of possible solutions for responding to the system; the selection of surpassing proposal; 2. adjustment of the surpassing proposal; preparation of technical documentation; design of your building process; adjustment of its operation, use and maintenance; its materialization; experimentation and evaluation. The conclusions was that this system is "Adaptive" and "affordable" that presents facility construction and installation work; features that make it an "adoptable product" in different types of architectural objects and a "sustainable product" because that makes it possible to the care of the environment.Indizada en: Agricultural & Environmental Science Database, CAB Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, Veterinary Science DatabaseFil: Garzon, Beatriz Silvia. Treball desenvolupat dins el marc del programa 'European Project Semester' i l' "International Design Project Semester".Sea containers are used globally for shipping and have been for over 60 years, there are millions of them worldwide sitting unused in ports, recently individuals and businesses are realising the potential of this and using them to construct permanent buildings faster and cheaper than traditional buildings. Neàpolis, an innovation agency situated in Vilanova i la Geltrú identified the potential of sea container for a new business property. The present report details the project “Sea Container Building” during the European Project Semester 2017, completed by six international students at Escola Politècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Villanova i la Geltrú (EPSEVG) in cooperation with Neàpolis Neàpolis encountered a problem due to a lack of space to expand their business so they announced the above-mentioned project. The task given to the team was to design, analyse and plan a new multipurpose building using sea containers as the primary building material which should be constructed on the site next to the main Neàpolis headquarters. First of all, general information about sea containers and existing sea container buildings was researched. Secondly the requirements set by Neàpolis were written down. The new construction must consist of a cowork office space, a maker space, a bar/café and an exhibition hall offering space for at least 30 people altogether. Thirdly the building site is examined and the urban regulations are analysed. At present the plot is qualified as a Green Zone, thus it is not allowed to build. However solutions to change this circumstance exist and should not limit the project. Followed by various research about the climate and eco aspects which led to several exterior design concepts which were then refined into a final design and agreed upon by all stakeholders. Based on the design and the plot characteristics a foundation type was chosen and the sewage piping was planned. At the same time as the exterior finishing the interior layout started in close relation with each other. Floor plans and electrical plans are created. Furniture is chosen and the interior layout is completed. Furthermore the construction process is planned to estimate the construction time and compare it to a classic concrete building. Over the whole planning the costs are monitored and calculated with estimated and researched numbers for each element to give as precise a total cost estimation as possible and to also compare it to classic concrete buildings like the construction time. A conclusion and an outlook (list of next steps) are completing this report

The integration of electronic hardware into furniture aims to improve the user experience and quality of life. In order for the smartified furniture to have the functionalities predefined by the user, it is necessary to perform validations throughout the process of designing and developing smartified furniture. The focus of this dissertation is the Quality Assurance System, which is responsible for the validations of the furniture smartification process, ensuring that the hardware components used for the development of the solution are compatible with each other and with the dimensions of the furniture, and that the smartified furniture has the intended functionalities. A framework scenario of the Quality Assurance System and the intervening systems required for the process of integrating hardware into furniture is presented. Based on the scenario, a validation framework is presented, whose main purpose is to validate the intermediate steps of the furniture smartification process. The applicability of the validation framework in the smartification process, ensures that: the hardware used in the development of the solution is valid, the smartification problem is feasible, the solution and the furniture smartification prototype are both dimensionally and functionally valid. The implementation and testing of the validation framework are presented and demonstrated on two real-life furniture smartification use cases.

Capturing the Social Experience of SCU Campus Housing Options in Virtual Tours

For incoming students at Santa Clara University, it can be challenging and stressful to choose which campus housing to live in. Is it a social dorm or a quiet one? What types of students live here? Will we get along? Will I feel comfortable in the place I’ll call home for the next nine months? Santa Clara University offers very limited resources for choosing campus housing. With the overhead 2D room layouts and the “selfie stick” dorm tours that focus more on the resident director than the rooms, it is hard to discern the sociality of each space which is often a student’s top concern when choosing a residence hall. To fix this, along with portraying each residence hall in an AR/VR tour in which you can walk throughout the dorms, we aim to provide a sense of the unique social character of each residence hall. For example, as you move through the space, you might interact with virtual avatars that give you information about the sociality of the space. Drawing upon surveys and interviews, we will introduce the type of student that fits the social scene of each dorm, letting incoming freshmen up to graduating seniors the opportunity to find the dorm that best fits their needs and interests

EG-ICE 2021 Workshop on Intelligent Computing in Engineering

    Get PDF
The 28th EG-ICE International Workshop 2021 brings together international experts working at the interface between advanced computing and modern engineering challenges. Many engineering tasks require open-world resolutions to support multi-actor collaboration, coping with approximate models, providing effective engineer-computer interaction, search in multi-dimensional solution spaces, accommodating uncertainty, including specialist domain knowledge, performing sensor-data interpretation and dealing with incomplete knowledge. While results from computer science provide much initial support for resolution, adaptation is unavoidable and most importantly, feedback from addressing engineering challenges drives fundamental computer-science research. Competence and knowledge transfer goes both ways

Minimalism, Technology and Opportunity: Developing a New Olympic Prototype

It is very important as designers to make design decisions that not only effect and create results for the immediate, current situation at hand, but it is also our responsibility to create and design with the intention of fostering an always changing, constantly adapting, sustainable environment that protects, conserves and even harvests our natural environment and preserves it for the betterment of our future generations. With that being said, we designers also have the responsibility of designing a place that has the ability to move its inhabitants emotionally and physically through the space without compromising its functionality. An exorbitant amount of money and resources is invested into designing and constructing stadiums of this day and age. However, most of the time these investments are not fully recovered as the stadiums fail to remain effectively operational regularly throughout the year or even after the major sporting event has concluded. This leads to a massive structural space that is unable to generate enough of its own resources to keep the building up and running. This leads to an abandoned building with a very high embodied energy. To alleviate this situation this thesis will be focused on developing new and innovative methods of designing, constructing and utilizing large scale stadium architecture through the use of robotics and 3D printing while also taking advantage and exercising the tactics and methods of temporary venue architecture. To mitigate the socio-economic impact of stadium architecture on our environment, it is important to turn our attention to self-contained, temporary venue architecture and to rethink the future of stadium design. As we are also moving closer to an entirely digital age, it would deem unnecessary to even create structures of such a large magnitude. Thus, the premise for my thesis revolves around a more prominent digital audience. Whilst still giving significance to a physical audience, by designing and constructing a venue that is more temporary and in turn more sustainable. This is achieved through a stadium designed to be constructed, taken down and eventually transported to the next Olympic destination, much like a circus
