The Mihouse urban project consists of common areas with buildings with four to five stories formed by groups of apartments. Embodied Energy Analysis: A Sustainable Construction Design Assessment Tool

    Get PDF
Embodied energy analysis can be used as a construction design assessment tool in a sustainable matrix for a building. Its implementation however remains challenging mainly because of data measurement errors. A comparison between the deterministic embodied energy (EE) of a building and the stochastic EE of the same building undertaken using Monte Carlo simulation showed a wide variation in results. It is recommended that the specification of EE intensity of building materials in the construction industry can assist in producing accurate and more credible EE values of building

    Communications in construction design

    Get PDF
Construction design has become an increasingly complex synthesis activity for which effective solutions depend upon co-operative participation by a number of people. Thus communication, including the integration of specialised knowledge and negotiation of differences between team members, is a vital process for collaborative design. A questionnaire survey was initially conducted to investigate communication issues and problems, which had been highlighted from a review of the literature, in current construction design. The results confirmed that communication among the different construction team members is often difficult although of paramount important to design outcomes. Based on these results, case studies have been carried out to gain further insights into communication issues and problems, and explore why and how they are caused. Through the application of multiple approaches, a model has been developed, which suggests strategies that may help participants communicate more effectively and ultimately improve the quality of construction design outcomes

Compact Habit is a company that through dynamic responsiveness and innovation work, has created a new paradign based on industrialisation and new construction design. In order to design projects using methods that facilitate the industrialisation of construction, we nees to rethink the way we work. Optimisation, and all things to which it relates, shall be the key to transformation, to "the industrialisation of construction

This study evaluates factors influencing Saudi construction design management. Through the use of literature review, questionnaire and interview surveys, the study identified and assessed the factors influencing design management in Saudi Arabia and suggested ways of improving the Saudi construction design management. The sample for the study was carefully selected with the use of purposive sampling technique. A total of one hundred and fifty questionnaires were administered online and of this number, fifty three respondents returned completed questionnaires. In addition, nine carefully sampled seasoned professionals were interviewed. Through the use of mean item score and content analysis for the interviews, the identified factors were assessed. The results obtained from descriptive analysis indicate that respondents ranked ‘effectiveness of communication channels and methods’ as the most important factor influencing design management in the study area. This was closely followed by ‘cultural differences’ and ‘deficient project documentations’. On ways to improve the Saudi construction design management, the respondents gave divergent views on the issue. Among the views expressed is that the government should ensure that the local consultants are well trained. The study recommends that the government should provide support for small and medium sized Saudi-based companies to integrate and collaborate with large foreign ones in order to work round the problem accruing from only foreign ones. This would further increase new innovative collaborative working.Â

The study aims to access the implementation of sustainable housing indicators (SHI) in the building design and construction in Ondo State, Nigeria. Generally, the overall degree of incorporating SHI in the building construction showed that Ondo Central District (OCAEZ) has the highest design compliance, while the awareness is unpopular in Ondo North District (ONAEZ) and Ondo South District (OSAEZ). Conversely, the selection of sustainability key indicators is very important at the early design stage and this would be veritable to projecting the environmental impact, energy and air quality sustainability potency of building. This development will go a long way to integrate and improve the building design and construction and enabling sustainability in building development
