Smart Flow Steering Agent for End-to-End Delay Improvement in Software-Defined Networks
يتقوم أداة التوجيه الذكية المقترحة في هذه الورقة البحثية من فتح أفقاً جديداً لنشر أدوات ذكية جديدة في شبكة SDN تعزز قابلية برمجة الشبكات وإدارتها .To ensure fault tolerance and distributed management, distributed protocols are employed as one of the major architectural concepts underlying the Internet. However, inefficiency, instability and fragility could be potentially overcome with the help of the novel networking architecture called software-defined networking (SDN). The main property of this architecture is the separation of the control and data planes. To reduce congestion and thus improve latency and throughput, there must be homogeneous distribution of the traffic load over the different network paths. This paper presents a smart flow steering agent (SFSA) for data flow routing based on current network conditions. To enhance throughput and minimize latency, the SFSA distributes network traffic to suitable paths, in addition to supervising link and path loads. A scenario with a minimum spanning tree (MST) routing algorithm and another with open shortest path first (OSPF) routing algorithms were employed to assess the SFSA. By comparison, to these two routing algorithms, the suggested SFSA strategy determined a reduction of 2% in packets dropped ratio (PDR), a reduction of 15-45% in end-to-end delay according to the traffic produced, as well as a reduction of 23% in round trip time (RTT). The Mininet emulator and POX controller were employed to conduct the simulation. Another advantage of the SFSA over the MST and OSPF is that its implementation and recovery time do not exhibit fluctuations. The smart flow steering agent will open a new horizon for deploying new smart agents in SDN that enhance network programmability and management
Hybrid SDN Evolution: A Comprehensive Survey of the State-of-the-Art
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an evolutionary networking paradigm
which has been adopted by large network and cloud providers, among which are
Tech Giants. However, embracing a new and futuristic paradigm as an alternative
to well-established and mature legacy networking paradigm requires a lot of
time along with considerable financial resources and technical expertise.
Consequently, many enterprises can not afford it. A compromise solution then is
a hybrid networking environment (a.k.a. Hybrid SDN (hSDN)) in which SDN
functionalities are leveraged while existing traditional network
infrastructures are acknowledged. Recently, hSDN has been seen as a viable
networking solution for a diverse range of businesses and organizations.
Accordingly, the body of literature on hSDN research has improved remarkably.
On this account, we present this paper as a comprehensive state-of-the-art
survey which expands upon hSDN from many different perspectives
New paradigms of legacy network features over SDN Architecture
The Software Define Networking (SDN) paradigm proposes faster implementations, flexibility, and a simplified network management, resulting very attractive to new carrier deployments. Nevertheless, migrating legacy networks to SDN scenarios has been slowed down. Traditional network features, such as high availability, load balancing, and scalability are constrained by the centralized nature of SDN architecture. This study evaluates legacy network features, applied to an SDN network, analyzing the impact of this evolution on the network performance. For the evaluation, a set of virtual scenarios has been implemented, assessing different network parameters, in order to measure the impact on the network performance
Software Defined Networks based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey
The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to
ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability
issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid
(SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical
power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side
management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will
bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system.
For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time
consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built
on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG
systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue.
Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the
communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey
on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of
SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case
studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for
SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes
applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and
future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte
Amaru: plug&play resilient in-band control for SDN
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a pillar of next-generation networks. ImplementingSDN requires the establishment of a decoupled control communication, which might be installed either as anout-of-band or in-band network. While the benefits of in-band control networks seem apparent, no standardprotocol exists and most of setups are based on ad-hoc solutions. This article defines Amaru, a protocolthat provides plug&play resilient in-band control for SDN with low-complexity and high scalability. Amarufollows an exploration mechanism to find all possible paths between the controller and any node of thenetwork, which drastically reduces convergence time and exchanged messages, while increasing robustness.Routing is based on masked MAC addresses, which also simplifies routing tables, minimizing the numberof entries to one per path, independently of the network size. We evaluated Amaru with three differentimplementations and diverse types of networks and failures, and obtained excellent results, providing almoston-the-fly rerouting and low recovery time.Comunidad de MadridUniversidad de Alcal
Design and implementation of an advanced MQTT broker for distributed pub/sub scenarios
MQTT is one of the most popular communication protocols for Internet of Things applications. Based on a publish/subscribe pattern, it relies on a single broker to exchange messages among clients according to topics of interest. However, such a centralized approach does not scale well and is prone to single point of failure risks, calling for solutions where multiple brokers cooperate together in a distributed fashion. In this paper, we present a complete solution for a distributed MQTT broker systems. We target several functional primitives which are key in such a scenario: broker discovery and failure recovery, overlay tree network creation and message routing. Moreover, we also focus on the case where multiple topics are present in the system. In such a scenario, a single tree-based overlay network connecting the different brokers may not be the most efficient solution. To cope with this issue, we propose a topic-based routing scheme for MQTT distributed brokers. The proposed solution creates multiple overlay networks in the distributed system, each one linking together only the brokers whose connected clients have interest in the same topics. We implement the complete system as an extension of the popular HiveMQ MQTT broker and perform several experiments to test its performance in scenarios characterized by a different publishers/subscribers configurations as well as number of topics existing in the system
Deploying Software-Defined Networks: a Telco Perspective
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) proposes a new network architecture in which the control plane and forwarding plane are decoupled. SDN can improve network efficiency and ease of management through the centralization of the control and policy decisions. However, SDN deployments are currently limited to data-center and experimental environments. This thesis surveys the deployment of SDN from the perspective of a telecommunication network operator. We discuss the strategies which enable the operator to migrate to a network in which both SDN and legacy devices interoperate. As a synthesis of existing technologies and protocols, we formulate an automated process for the bootstrapping of newly deployed forwarding devices. Furthermore, we review solutions for programming the forwarding devices and for performing topology discovery. The functional correctness of the proposed bootstrapping process is evaluated in an emulated environment
Multi-Stage Network Upgrade for Green Software Defined Networking
This thesis addresses three versions of a novel problem, called Green Multi-Stage Upgrade (GMSU), to upgrade legacy networks to Software Defined Networks (SDNs). The three versions, namely GMSU-1, GMSU-2, and GMSU-3, consider legacy networks that support IEEE 802.1AX, where each link contains multiple cables. Each version aims to replace a set of legacy-switches with SDN-switches over multiple stages. The aim is to maximally turn off unused cables adjacent to SDN-switches to save energy

Design and development of an SDN robotic system with intelligent openflow IOT testbeds for power assessment, prediction and fault management
This thesis was submitted for the award of Docctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonCurrent wind turbine and power grid industry have relatively little research and
development with regards to implementing novel communication network and intel-
ligent system to overcome issues that pertain to network failure and lack of monitor-
ing. Wind turbine location could be a big concern when it comes to identifying an
efficient location for future wind turbine and the impact of a site with non-efficient
meteorological parameters can result in relocation of a wind turbine and revenue-
loss. Unplanned wind turbine shutdowns that are considered to be one of the major
revenue-loss factors of a modern wind farm business. Typically, the unplanned wind
turbine shutdown is a result of sensors fail due to harsh environment challenges that
prevent hardware status from being available on the monitoring system. The above
mentioned research problems pertain to wind turbine site assessment and predic-
tion of power. In this thesis, a novel programmable software-defined robotics and
IoT testbeds are proposed with the fusion of Artificial Intelligence and optimiza-
tion methods to solve specific problems related to wind turbine site assessment and
fault management. The site selection process is implemented using proposed aerial
and ground robotic systems that are incorporated with Software-Defined Networks
and OpenFlow switching capabilities. A second stage development of the system is
proposing a prediction platform that run on the aerial robot cluster using neural net-
works optimization regression techniques. To overcome the unplanned wind turbine
network outage, an IoT micro cloud cluster system is proposed that act as immedi-
ate fail-over platform to provide continuous health readings of the wind turbine to
ensure the turbine in question will not get shutdown unnecessarily. The proposed
system help in minimizing revenue-loss caused by stopping a wind turbine from op-
eration and help maintain generated power stability on the grid. Additionally, since
large wind farms require an agile and scalable management of selecting the most
efficient wind turbine location install. Thus, a softwarized cognitive routing proto-
col is proposed. The group of quadcopters is a redundant failover Software-Defined
Network/OpenFlow system that can cover every single way point of the farm land.
Although, power consumption is essential for the continuity the service, a Software-
Defined charging system testbed is proposed that uses inductive power transfer wit
