Concept and design of the hybrid distributed embedded systems testbed
Wireless mesh networks are an emerging and versatile communication technology.
The most common application of these networks is to provide access of any
number of users to the world wide Internet. They can be set up by Internet
service providers or even individuals joined in communities. Due to the
wireless medium that is shared by all participants, effects like short-time
fading, or the multi-hop property of the network topology many issues are
still in the focus of research. Testbeds are a powerful tool to study wireless
mesh networks as close as possible to real world application scenarios. In
this technical report we describe the design, architecture, and implementation
of our work-in-progress wireless testbed at Freie Universität Berlin
consisting of 100 mesh routers that span multiple buildings. The testbed is
hybrid as it combines wireless mesh network routers with a wireless sensor
network
Design and evaluation of a self-configuring wireless mesh network architecture
Wireless network connectivity plays an increasingly important role in supporting our everyday private and professional lives. For over three decades, self-organizing wireless multi-hop ad-hoc networks have been investigated as a decentralized replacement for the traditional forms of wireless networks that rely on a wired infrastructure. However, despite the tremendous efforts of the international wireless research community and widespread availability of devices that are able to support these networks, wireless ad-hoc networks are hardly ever used.
In this work, the reasons behind this discrepancy are investigated. It is found that several basic theoretical assumptions on ad-hoc networks prove to be wrong when solutions are deployed in reality, and that several basic functionalities are still missing. It is argued that a hierarchical wireless mesh network architecture, in which specialized, multi-interfaced mesh nodes form a reliable multi-hop wireless backbone for the less capable end-user clients is an essential step in bringing the ad-hoc networking concept one step closer to reality.
Therefore, in a second part of this work, algorithms increasing the reliability and supporting the deployment and management of these wireless mesh networks are developed, implemented and evaluated, while keeping the observed limitations and practical considerations in mind. Furthermore, the feasibility of the algorithms is verified by experiment.
The performance analysis of these protocols and the ability to deploy the developed algorithms on current generation off-the-shelf hardware indicates the successfulness of the followed research approach, which combines theoretical considerations with practical implementations and observations. However, it was found that there are also many pitfalls to using real-life implementation as a research technique. Therefore, in the last part of this work, a methodology for wireless network research using real-life implementation is developed, allowing researchers to generate more reliable protocols and performance analysis results with less effort
Vehicular Networks with Infrastructure: Modeling, Simulation and Testbed
This thesis focuses on Vehicular Networks with Infrastructure. In the examined scenarios, vehicular nodes (e.g., cars, buses) can communicate with infrastructure roadside units (RSUs) providing continuous or intermittent coverage of an urban road topology. Different aspects related to the design of new applications for Vehicular Networks are investigated through modeling, simulation and testing on real field. In particular, the thesis: i) provides a feasible multi-hop routing solution for maintaining connectivity among RSUs, forming the wireless mesh infrastructure, and moving vehicles; ii) explains how to combine the UHF and the traditional 5-GHz bands to design and implement a new high-capacity high-efficiency Content Downloading using disjoint control and service channels; iii) studies new RSUs deployment strategies for Content Dissemination and Downloading in urban and suburban scenarios with different vehicles mobility models and traffic densities; iv) defines an optimization problem to minimize the average travel delay perceived by the drivers, spreading different traffic flows over the surface roads in a urban scenario; v) exploits the concept of Nash equilibrium in the game-theory approach to efficiently guide electric vehicles drivers' towards the charging stations. Moreover, the thesis emphasizes the importance of using realistic mobility models, as well as reasonable signal propagation models for vehicular networks. Simplistic assumptions drive to trivial mathematical analysis and shorter simulations, but they frequently produce misleading results. Thus, testing the proposed solutions in the real field and collecting measurements is a good way to double-check the correctness of our studie
Reliable load-balancing routing for resource-constrained wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are energy and resource constrained. Energy limitations make it advantageous to balance radio transmissions across multiple sensor nodes. Thus, load balanced routing is highly desirable and has motivated a significant volume of research. Multihop sensor network architecture can also provide greater coverage, but requires a highly reliable and adaptive routing scheme to accommodate frequent topology changes. Current reliability-oriented protocols degrade energy efficiency and increase network latency. This thesis develops and evaluates a novel solution to provide energy-efficient routing while enhancing packet delivery reliability. This solution, a reliable load-balancing routing (RLBR), makes four contributions in the area of reliability, resiliency and load balancing in support of the primary objective of network lifetime maximisation. The results are captured using real world testbeds as well as simulations. The first contribution uses sensor node emulation, at the instruction cycle level, to characterise the additional processing and computation overhead required by the routing scheme. The second contribution is based on real world testbeds which comprises two different TinyOS-enabled senor platforms under different scenarios. The third contribution extends and evaluates RLBR using large-scale simulations. It is shown that RLBR consumes less energy while reducing topology repair latency and supports various aggregation weights by redistributing packet relaying loads. It also shows a balanced energy usage and a significant lifetime gain. Finally, the forth contribution is a novel variable transmission power control scheme which is created based on the experience gained from prior practical and simulated studies. This power control scheme operates at the data link layer to dynamically reduce unnecessarily high transmission power while maintaining acceptable link reliability
High Performance Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks for Industrial Internet of Things
Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks (WSANs) enable cost-effective communication for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). To achieve predictability and reliability demanded by industrial applications, industrial wireless standards (e.g., WirelessHART) incorporate a set of unique features such as a centralized management architecture, Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH), and conservative channel selection. However, those features also incur significant degradation in performance, efficiency, and agility. To overcome these key limitations of existing industrial wireless technologies, this thesis work develops and empirically evaluates a suite of novel network protocols and algorithms.
The primary contributions of this thesis are four-fold. (1) We first build an experimental testbed realizing key features of the WirelessHART protocol stack, and perform a series of empirical studies to uncover the limitations and potential improvements of existing network features. (2) We then investigate the impacts of the industrial WSAN protocol’s channel selection mechanism on routing and real-time performance, and present new channel and link selection strategies that improve route diversity and real-time performance. (3) To further enhance performance, we propose and design conservative channel reuse, a novel approach to support concurrent transmissions in a same wireless channel while maintaining a high degree of reliability. (4) Lastly, to address the limitation of the centralized architecture in handling network dynamics, we develop REACT, a Reliable, Efficient, and Adaptive Control Plane for centralized network management. REACT is designed to reduce the latency and energy cost of network reconfiguration by incorporating a reconfiguration planner to reduce a rescheduling cost, and an update engine providing efficient and reliable mechanisms to support schedule reconfiguration. All the network protocols and algorithms developed in this thesis have been empirically evaluated on the wireless testbed. This thesis represents a step toward next-generation IIoT for industrial automation that demands high-performance and agile wireless communication

Algorithms and Experimentation for Future Wireless Networks: From Internet-of-Things to Full-Duplex
Future and next-generation wireless networks are driven by the rapidly growing wireless traffic stemming from diverse services and applications, such as the Internet-of-Things (IoT), virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, and smart intersections. Many of these applications require massive connectivity between IoT devices as well as wireless access links with ultra-high bandwidth (Gbps or above) and ultra-low latency (10ms or less). Therefore, realizing the vision of future wireless networks requires significant research efforts across all layers of the network stack. In this thesis, we use a cross-layer approach and focus on several critical components of future wireless networks including IoT systems and full-duplex (FD) wireless, and on experimentation with advanced wireless technologies in the NSF PAWR COSMOS testbed.
First, we study tracking and monitoring applications in the IoT and focus on ultra-low-power energy harvesting networks. Based on realistic hardware characteristics, we design and optimize Panda, a centralized probabilistic protocol for maximizing the neighbor discovery rate between energy harvesting nodes under a power budget. Via testbed evaluation using commercial off-the-shelf energy harvesting nodes, we show that Panda outperforms existing protocols by up to 3x in terms of the neighbor discovery rate. We further explore this problem and consider a general throughput maximization problem among a set of heterogeneous energy-constrained ultra-low-power nodes. We analytically identify the theoretical fundamental limits of the rate at which data can be exchanged between these nodes, and design the distributed probabilistic protocol, EconCast, which approaches the maximum throughput in the limiting sense. Performance evaluations of EconCast using both simulations and real-world experiments show that it achieves up to an order of magnitude higher throughput than Panda and other known protocols.
We then study FD wireless - simultaneous transmission and reception at the same frequency - a key technology that can significantly improve the data rate and reduce communication latency by employing self-interference cancellation (SIC). In particular, we focus on enabling FD on small-form-factor devices leveraging the technique of frequency-domain equalization (FDE). We design, model, and optimize the FDE-based RF canceller, which can achieve >50dB RF SIC across 20MHz bandwidth, and experimentally show that our prototyped FD radios can achieve a link-level throughput gain of 1.85-1.91x. We also focus on combining FD with phased arrays, employing optimized transmit and receive beamforming, where the spatial degrees of freedom in multi-antenna systems are repurposed to achieve wideband RF SIC. Moving up in the network stack, we study heterogeneous networks with half-duplex and FD users, and develop the novel Hybrid-Greedy Maximum Scheduling (H-GMS) algorithm, which achieves throughput optimality in a distributed manner. Analytical and simulation results show that H-GMS achieves 5-10x better delay performance and improved fairness compared with state-of-the-art approaches.
Finally, we described experimentation and measurements in the city-scale COSMOS testbed being deployed in West Harlem, New York City. COSMOS' key building blocks include software-defined radios, millimeter-wave radios, a programmable optical network, and edge cloud, and their convergence will enable researchers to remotely explore emerging technologies in a real world environment. We provide a brief overview of the testbed and focus on experimentation with advanced technologies, including the integrating of open-access FD radios in the testbed and a pilot study on converged optical-wireless x-haul networking for cloud radio access networks (C-RANs). We also present an extensive 28GHz channel measurements in the testbed area, which is a representative dense urban canyon environment, and study the corresponding signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) coverage and achievable data rates. The results of this part helped drive and validate the design of the COSMOS testbed, and can inform further deployment and experimentation in the testbed.
In this thesis, we make several theoretical and experimental contributions to ultra-low-power energy harvesting networks and the IoT, and FD wireless. We also contribute to the experimentation and measurements in the COSMOS advanced wireless testbed. We believe that these contributions are essential to connect fundamental theory to practical systems, and ultimately to real-world applications, in future wireless networks
