Feasibility of wireless mesh for LTE-Advanced small cell access backhaul
Mobile traffic demands and volumes are increasing and will dramatically keep increasing in the future. Along with this, mobile networks have evolved to better match this growth. Fourth generation cellular network standard introduced a set of new innovations for mobile communications, including support for heterogeneous network deployments. Heterogeneous networking is the likely answer for future mobile data capacity shortage but also poses some challenges, the most evident being how to implement the backhauling.
One of the most promising heterogeneous network backhaul solutions is a meshed radio system with self-organizing features. The main scope of this master's thesis is the verification of functionality and feasibility of a wireless mesh backhaul concept developed by Nokia Siemens Networks through a proof-of-concept system.
All in all, the wireless mesh proof-of-concept system performed strongly throughout the development and testing process. The different functionalities were proven to work successfully together. With further development and enhancement, the system concept displays extreme potential for a state-of-the-art heterogeneous network backhaul technology

Performance measurements and analysis of the existing wireless communication technology in Iraq.
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityIraq may be considered as the largest wireless market in the Gulf region. A key driving factor in the market of wireless communication, it has seen enormous growth in the mobile phone market over the last five years leading to almost 24 million subscribers in 2011. Moreover, there are several technologies and services working in Iraq; three GSM Operators, three CDMA national operators and three CDMA provinces operators. The recent growth in the mobile phone market is based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standards creating the next-generation wireless technologies in the Iraqi Wireless Communication market. One of the essential issues of this research is to investigate the performance of the decreased Quality Of Service (QoS) caused by interferences in the services on GSM/CDMA operators in Iraq. Many issues should be studied and taken into consideration, such as; does the Multi-Coalition Forces cause the interferences, jamming, higher rate of calls drop and false ringing; or are they caused by bad design and planning? Do we need to optimise our network due to the large number of users? All these factors are investigated and the measurements of most service providers and government agencies will be gathered. A detailed analysis was included from the providers with measurements of performance and the reasons for the deterioration of wireless services. The novel contributions of this thesis is the extensive radio measurement campaign over the three mobile an CDMA operator networks and the analysis and recommendations that were drawn to suggest the best approach to improve the QoS of Wireless communication technologies. Awareness of actual reasons behind the deterioration of services will be raised to the Iraqi Government, CMC and the wireless service providers
Topology Management for Wireless Mesh Self-Organizing Mobile Backhauls
The mobile data consumption is increasing exponentially, creating demand for more capacity from the network. Cell densification with small cells, also known as Heterogeneous networks, is seen as a solution for the capacity problem. On the downside, this creates a problem for providing a cost-effective backhaul connection to these small cells.
The Self-optimizing Wireless Mesh Network (SWMN) backhaul has been proposed as a backhaul solution for small cells. In SWMN, the nodes form a partial mesh topology, where routing and data transmission is based on pre-computed prioritized set of routes and link-schedules. Hence, an entity that handles topology management functionalities is required, which enables automatic network configuration, network monitoring, optimization and management.
The main aim of this thesis is to verify the topology management functionalities. The work involved development of a simulator for creating test topology scenarios. Additionally, the task involved verifying the feasibility of functionalities in the proof-of-concept system
Evolution of High Throughput Satellite Systems: Vision, Requirements, and Key Technologies
High throughput satellites (HTS), with their digital payload technology, are
expected to play a key role as enablers of the upcoming 6G networks. HTS are
mainly designed to provide higher data rates and capacities. Fueled by
technological advancements including beamforming, advanced modulation
techniques, reconfigurable phased array technologies, and electronically
steerable antennas, HTS have emerged as a fundamental component for future
network generation. This paper offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art of HTS
systems, with a focus on standardization, patents, channel multiple access
techniques, routing, load balancing, and the role of software-defined
networking (SDN). In addition, we provide a vision for next-satellite systems
that we named as extremely-HTS (EHTS) toward autonomous satellites supported by
the main requirements and key technologies expected for these systems. The EHTS
system will be designed such that it maximizes spectrum reuse and data rates,
and flexibly steers the capacity to satisfy user demand. We introduce a novel
architecture for future regenerative payloads while summarizing the challenges
imposed by this architecture
A network mobility management architecture for a heteregeneous network environment
Network mobility management enables mobility of personal area networks and vehicular networks across heterogeneous access networks using a Mobile Router. This dissertation presents a network mobility management architecture for minimizing the impact of handoffs on the communications of nodes in the mobile network. The architecture addresses mobility in legacy networks without infrastructure support, but can also exploit infrastructure support for improved handoff performance. Further, the proposed architecture increases the efficiency of communications of nodes in the mobile network with counter parts in the fixed network through the use of caching and route optimization. The performance and costs of the proposed architecture are evaluated through empirical and numerical analysis. The analysis shows the feasibility of the architecture in the networks of today and in those of the near future.
Esitetyssä arkkitehtuurissa verkonvaihdon vaikutus minimoidaan varustamalla liikkuva reititin kahdella radiolla. Käyttäen kahta radiota liikkuva reititin pystyy suorittamaan verkonvaihdon keskeyttämättä päätelaitteiden yhteyksiä, mikäli verkonvaihtoon on riittävästi aikaa. Käytettävissa oleva aika riippuu liikkuvan reitittimen nopeudesta ja radioverkon rakenteesta. Arkkitehtuuri osaa myös hyödyntää infrastruktuurin tukea saumattomaan verkonvaihtoon. Verkkoinfrastruktuurin tuki nopeuttaa verkonvaihdosprosessia, kasvattaenmaksimaalista verkonvaihdos tahtia.
Handover in Mobile WiMAX Networks: The State of Art and Research Issues
The next-generation Wireless Metropolitan Area
Networks, using the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access (WiMAX) as the core technology based on the IEEE
802.16 family of standards, is evolving as a Fourth-Generation
(4G) technology. With the recent introduction of mobility management
frameworks in the IEEE 802.16e standard, WiMAX
is now placed in competition to the existing and forthcoming
generations of wireless technologies for providing ubiquitous
computing solutions. However, the success of a good mobility
framework largely depends on the capability of performing fast
and seamless handovers irrespective of the deployed architectural
scenario. Now that the IEEE has defined the Mobile WiMAX
(IEEE 802.16e) MAC-layer handover management framework,
the Network Working Group (NWG) of the WiMAX Forum
is working on the development of the upper layers. However,
the path to commercialization of a full-fledged WiMAX mobility
framework is full of research challenges. This article focuses on
potential handover-related research issues in the existing and
future WiMAX mobility framework. A survey of these issues in
the MAC, Network and Cross-Layer scenarios is presented along
with discussion of the different solutions to those challenges. A
comparative study of the proposed solutions, coupled with some
insights to the relevant issues, is also included
The Design and Implementation of an Over-the-top Cloud-based Vertical Handover Decision Service for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks
The widespread availability of heterogeneous wireless networks (hetnets) presents a resource allocation challenge to network operators and administrators. Overlapping network coverage should be utilized to its fullest extent, providing users with a fair share of bandwidth while maximizing the efficient use of the operator\u27s resources. Currently, network selection occurs locally at the mobile device and does not take into account factors such as the state of other networks that might be available in the device\u27s location. The local decision made by the device can often result in underutilization of network resources and a degraded user experience. This type of selfish network selection might not result in optimal bandwidth allocation when compared to approaches that make use of a centralized resource controller \cite{gpf}. The decision making process behind the selection of these networks continues to be an open area of research, and a variety of algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem. An over-the-top handover decision service treats each wireless access network in a hetnet as a black box, assuming detailed network topology and state information is unavailable to the handover decision algorithm. The algorithm then uses network data gathered empirically from users to provide them with a network selection service that considers the current conditions of available networks in a given location. This is a departure from past designs of vertical handover decision algorithms, which tend to approach the problem from the perspective of individual network operators. The wide range of radio access technologies operated by different network operators that are available to a device within a hetnet, coupled with the mobile data offload effort, is the primary motivator behind our novel choice in direction. This thesis documents the design and implementation of such an over-the-top vertical handover decision service
