    Supporting group maintenance through prognostics-enhanced dynamic dependability prediction

    Condition-based maintenance strategies adapt maintenance planning through the integration of online condition monitoring of assets. The accuracy and cost-effectiveness of these strategies can be improved by integrating prognostics predictions and grouping maintenance actions respectively. In complex industrial systems, however, effective condition-based maintenance is intricate. Such systems are comprised of repairable assets which can fail in different ways, with various effects, and typically governed by dynamics which include time-dependent and conditional events. In this context, system reliability prediction is complex and effective maintenance planning is virtually impossible prior to system deployment and hard even in the case of condition-based maintenance. Addressing these issues, this paper presents an online system maintenance method that takes into account the system dynamics. The method employs an online predictive diagnosis algorithm to distinguish between critical and non-critical assets. A prognostics-updated method for predicting the system health is then employed to yield well-informed, more accurate, condition-based suggestions for the maintenance of critical assets and for the group-based reactive repair of non-critical assets. The cost-effectiveness of the approach is discussed in a case study from the power industry

    Availability analysis of flexible manufacturing system

    This study presents a methodology for calculating the time-dependent availability of flexible manufacturing systems subject to independent exponential components failure. The advantages of failure mode analysis, as presented in this study, are that all potential failure modes are exposed, their associated probability of occurrence are determined and their effect on system performance is evaluated;Three Markovian models are developed considering failure modes. The first model considers a system with one or more flexible machining cells. The second model considers a system with one group of parallel machining cells. The third model considers a typical flexible manufacturing system linked with a material handling system to form a combined network. Application of this model to an existing flexible manufacturing system is analyzed in detail. The performance measures of the three models are determined;A computer program is developed to evaluate the system availability, production rate, component utilization and system effectiveness. The effect of failure modes on system availability is investigated and sensitivity analysis on different performance measures is conducted. Illustrative examples and typical recommendations are also presented and methods of enhancing the performance modeling capability of flexible manufacturing systems are discussed

    DECISION SUPPORT MODEL IN FAILURE-BASED COMPUTERIZED MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM INDUSTRIES

    Maintenance decision support system is crucial to ensure maintainability and reliability of equipments in production lines. This thesis investigates a few decision support models to aid maintenance management activities in small and medium industries. In order to improve the reliability of resources in production lines, this study introduces a conceptual framework to be used in failure-based maintenance. Maintenance strategies are identified using the Decision-Making Grid model, based on two important factors, including the machines’ downtimes and their frequency of failures. The machines are categorized into three downtime criterions and frequency of failures, which are high, medium and low. This research derived a formula based on maintenance cost, to re-position the machines prior to Decision-Making Grid analysis. Subsequently, the formula on clustering analysis in the Decision-Making Grid model is improved to solve multiple-criteria problem. This research work also introduced a formula to estimate contractor’s response and repair time. The estimates are used as input parameters in the Analytical Hierarchy Process model. The decisions were synthesized using models based on the contractors’ technical skills such as experience in maintenance, skill to diagnose machines and ability to take prompt action during troubleshooting activities. Another important criteria considered in the Analytical Hierarchy Process is the business principles of the contractors, which includes the maintenance quality, tools, equipments and enthusiasm in problem-solving. The raw data collected through observation, interviews and surveys in the case studies to understand some risk factors in small and medium food processing industries. The risk factors are analysed with the Ishikawa Fishbone diagram to reveal delay time in machinery maintenance. The experimental studies are conducted using maintenance records in food processing industries. The Decision Making Grid model can detect the top ten worst production machines on the production lines. The Analytical Hierarchy Process model is used to rank the contractors and their best maintenance practice. This research recommends displaying the results on the production’s indicator boards and implements the strategies on the production shop floor. The proposed models can be used by decision makers to identify maintenance strategies and enhance competitiveness among contractors in failure-based maintenance. The models can be programmed as decision support sub-procedures in computerized maintenance management systems

    Integrated optimization of maintenance interventions and spare part selection for a partially observable multi-component system

    Advanced technical systems are typically composed of multiple critical components whose failure cause a system failure. Often, it is not technically or economically possible to install sensors dedicated to each component, which means that the exact condition of each component cannot be monitored, but a system level failure or defect can be observed. The service provider then needs to implement a condition based maintenance policy that is based on partial information on the systems condition. Furthermore, when the service provider decides to service the system, (s)he also needs to decide which spare part(s) to bring along in order to avoid emergency shipments and part returns. We model this problem as an infinite horizon partially observable Markov decision process. In a set of numerical experiments, we first compare the optimal policy with preventive and corrective maintenance policies: The optimal policy leads on average to a 28% and 15% cost decrease, respectively. Second, we investigate the value of having full information, i.e., sensors dedicated to each component: This leads on average to a 13% cost decrease compared to the case with partial information. Interestingly, having full information is more valuable for cheaper, less reliable components than for more expensive, more reliable components

This system setup has the benefit of low cost, flexibility, low weight, no wiring and simplicity of system diagnoses and maintenance. However, it also unavoidably calls some wireless network time delays and packet dropout into the design procedure.     Battery management system (BMS) emerges a decisive system component in battery-powered applications, such as (hybrid) electric vehicles and portable devices. However, due to the inaccurate parameter estimation of aged battery cells and multi-cell batteries, current BMSs cannot control batteries optimally, and therefore affect the usability of products. In this paper, we proposed a smart management system for multi-cell batteries, and discussed the development of our research study in three directions: i) improving the effectiveness of battery monitoring and current sensing, ii) modeling the battery aging process, and iii) designing a self-healing circuit system to compensate performance variations due to aging and other variations.published_or_final_versio

    Maintenance Management with Application of Computational Intelligence Generating a Decision Support System for the Load Dispatch in Power Plants

    The development of a computational tool to support the decision of load dispatch according to the operational conditions of motors and generators of power plants is proposed, which are classified in relation to the probabilities of faults by a fuzzy system developed in this text, from indicators obtained from the analysis of lubricating oil, vibration analysis, and thermography of power generation equipment. The basis for the study is based on the principle of operation and operational conditions of the equipment to be dispatched for generation in a power plant, in addition to its particularities as specific consumption and the polluting emission for each equipment. In this way, this work aims not only to provide the tools to monitor these equipment but also, based on the management reports of vibration, temperature, and oil analysis, take corrective actions to maintain the necessary reliability and achieve the quality of the service through a preclearance procedure that takes into account the operating conditions of the equipment, obtaining performance indicators of the plan

    Optimal Maintenance Thresholds to Perform Preventive Actions by Using Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms

    Maintenance has always been a key activity in the manufacturing industry because of its economic consequences. Nowadays, its importance is increasing thanks to the Industry 4.0 or fourth industrial revolution. There are more and more complex systems to maintain, and maintenance management must gain efficiency and effectiveness in order to keep all these devices in proper conditions. Within maintenance, Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) programs can provide significant advantages, even though often these programs are complex to manage and understand. For this reason, several research papers propose approaches that are as simple as possible and can be understood by users and modified by experts. In this context, this paper focuses on CBM optimization in an industrial environment, with the objective of determining the optimal values of preventive intervention limits for equipment under corrective and preventive maintenance cost criteria. In this work, a cost-benefit mathematical model is developed. It considers the evolution in quality and production speed, along with condition based, corrective and preventive maintenance. The cost-benefit optimization is performed using a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm.
