Predicting the Output From a Stochastic Computer Model When a Deterministic Approximation is Available
The analysis of computer models can be aided by the construction of surrogate
models, or emulators, that statistically model the numerical computer model.
Increasingly, computer models are becoming stochastic, yielding different
outputs each time they are run, even if the same input values are used.
Stochastic computer models are more difficult to analyse and more difficult to
emulate - often requiring substantially more computer model runs to fit. We
present a method of using deterministic approximations of the computer model to
better construct an emulator. The method is applied to numerous toy examples,
as well as an idealistic epidemiology model, and a model from the building
performance field
Model-based groupware solution for distributed real-time collaborative 4D planning via teamwork
Construction planning plays a fundamental role in construction project management that requires team working among planners from a diverse range of disciplines and in geographically dispersed working situations. Model-based four-dimensional (4D) computer-aided design (CAD) groupware, though considered a possible approach to supporting collaborative planning, is still short of effective collaborative mechanisms for teamwork due to methodological, technological and social challenges. Targeting this problem, this paper proposes a model-based groupware solution to enable a group of multidisciplinary planners to perform real-time collaborative 4D planning across the Internet. In the light of the interactive definition method, and its computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) design analysis, the paper discusses the realization of interactive collaborative mechanisms from software architecture, application mode, and data exchange protocol. These mechanisms have been integrated into a groupware solution, which was validated by a planning team in a truly geographically dispersed condition. Analysis of the validation results revealed that the proposed solution is feasible for real-time collaborative 4D planning to gain a robust construction plan through collaborative teamwork. The realization of this solution triggers further considerations about its enhancement for wider

Semi-Markov adjunction to the Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME)
The rule-based Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME) program was expanded in its ability to incorporate the effect of fault-handling processes into the construction of a reliability model. The fault-handling processes are modeled as semi-Markov events and CAME constructs and appropriate semi-Markov model. To solve the model, the program outputs it in a form which can be directly solved with the Semi-Markov Unreliability Range Evaluator (SURE) program. As a means of evaluating the alterations made to the CAME program, the program is used to model the reliability of portions of the Integrated Airframe/Propulsion Control System Architecture (IAPSA 2) reference configuration. The reliability predictions are compared with a previous analysis. The results bear out the feasibility of utilizing CAME to generate appropriate semi-Markov models to model fault-handling processes
Product-Quotient Surfaces: new invariants and algorithms
In this article we suggest a new approach to the systematic, computer-aided
construction and to the classification of product-quotient surfaces,
introducing a new invariant, the integer gamma, which depends only on the
singularities of the quotient model X=(C_1 x C_2)/G. It turns out that gamma is
related to the codimension of the subspace of H^{1,1} generated by algebraic
curves coming from the construction (i.e., the classes of the two fibers and
the Hirzebruch-Jung strings arising from the minimal resolution of
singularities of X).
Profiting from this new insight we developped and implemented an algorithm
which constructs all regular product-quotient surfaces with given values of
gamma and geometric genus in the computer algebra program MAGMA. Being far
better than the previous algorithms, we are able to construct a substantial
number of new regular product-quotient surfaces of geometric genus zero. We
prove that only two of these are of general type, raising the number of known
families of product-quotient surfaces of general type with genus zero to 75.
This gives evidence to the conjecture that there is an effective bound of the
form gamma < Gamma(p_g,q).Comment: 33 pages, 3 figure
An approach for constructing a domain definition metamodel with ATL
International audiencePresent day Telecommunications competitive market requires a rapid definition process of new services. To ensure this, we propose to replace the current paper-based process with a computer-aided one. Central to this later process is an information model that captures domain specific knowledge. We approach its construction by defining model querying and model transformation rules in ATL over existing network abstraction layers. We also report on the way we used ATL to define these rules and the benefits of doing so, and pinpoint issues that may be addressed in future ATL releases

The CCAILM learning model: an instructional model for teaching and learning of engineering modules
This research report presents a new teaching and learning model in engineering classes. The proposed learning module is called the “Constructionist Computer Aided Instructional Learning Model” (CCAILM). This new model was derived from constructionist learning theory, the media-affects-learning hypothesis and the multiple representation principle. The process of knowledge construction, when an engineering lecture is delivered and learnt using a CCAILM approach, as well as the instructional strategies and steps prescribed in the CCAILM teaching and learning environment, arealso discussed in this report.Key words: engineering education, undergraduate, engineering modules, learning and teaching model
Knowledge Representation and WordNets
Knowledge itself is a representation of “real facts”.
Knowledge is a logical model that presents facts from “the real world” witch can be expressed in a formal language. Representation means the construction of a model of some part of reality.
Knowledge representation is contingent to both cognitive science and artificial intelligence. In cognitive science it expresses the way people store and process the information. In the AI field the goal is to store knowledge in such way that permits intelligent programs to represent information as nearly as possible to human intelligence.
Knowledge Representation is referred to the formal representation of knowledge intended to be processed and stored by computers and to draw conclusions from this knowledge.
Examples of applications are expert systems, machine translation systems, computer-aided maintenance systems and information retrieval systems (including database front-ends).knowledge, representation, ai models, databases, cams
Cellular-Automata and Innovation within Indonesian Traditional Weaving Crafts
The paper reports the possibility of Indonesian traditional artisans of weaving designs and crafts to explore the cellular automata, a dynamical model in computation that may yield similar patterns. The reviews of the cellular automata due to the perspective of weaving process reveals that the latter would focus on macro-properties, i.e.: the strength of structural construction beside the aesthetic patterns and designs. The meeting of traditional weaving practice and the computational model is delivered and open the door for interesting discourse of computer-aided designs for the traditional artists and designers to come
