    Computer Vision Techniques for Ambient Intelligence Applications

    Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a muldisciplinary area which refers to environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people and objects. The rapid progress of technology and simultaneous reduction of hardware costs characterizing the recent years have enlarged the number of possible AmI applications, thus raising at the same time new research challenges. In particular, one important requirement in AmI is providing a proactive support to people in their everyday working and free-time activities. To this aim, Computer Vision represents a core research track since only through suitable vision devices and techniques it is possible to detect elements of interest and understand the occurring events. The goal of this thesis is presenting and demonstrating efficacy of novel machine vision research contributes for different AmI scenarios: object keypoints analysis for Augmented Reality purpose, segmentation of natural images for plant species recognition and heterogeneous people identification in unconstrained environments

    The IST Advisory Group (ISTAG) of the European Union had a vision of "Ambient Intelligence" (AmI) in 1999. It refers to "an exciting new paradigm of information technology, in which people are empowered through a digital environment that is aware of their presence and context sensitive, adaptive and responsive to their needs, habits, gestures and emotions". In AmI the technology will become invisible, embedded, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple interactions, attuned to all our senses and adaptive to users and contexts (Scenarios for Ambient Intelligence). AmI proposes a shift in computing from the traditional computer to a whole set of devices placed around us providing users with an intelligent background

    A best view selection in meetings through attention analysis using a multi-camera network

    Human activity analysis is an essential task in ambient intelligence and computer vision. The main focus lies in the automatic analysis of ongoing activities from a multi-camera network. One possible application is meeting analysis which explores the dynamics in meetings using low-level data and inferring high-level activities. However, the detection of such activities is still very challenging due to the often corrupted or imprecise low-level data. In this paper, we present an approach to understand the dynamics in meetings using a multi-camera network, consisting of fixed ambient and portable close-up cameras. As a particular application we are aiming to find the most informative video stream, for example as a representative view for a remote participant. Our contribution is threefold: at first, we estimate the extrinsic parameters of the portable close-up cameras based on head positions. Secondly, we find common overlapping areas based on the consensus of people’s orientation. And thirdly, the most informative view for a remote participant is estimated using common overlapping areas. We evaluated our proposed approach and compared it to a motion estimation method. Experimental results show that we can reach an accuracy of 74% compared to manually selected views

    The Mundane Computer: Non-Technical Design Challenges Facing Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence

    Interdisciplinary collaboration, to include those who are not natural scientists, engineers and computer scientists, is inherent in the idea of ubiquitous computing, as formulated by Mark Weiser in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, ubiquitous computing has remained largely a computer science and engineering concept, and its non-technical side remains relatively underdeveloped. The aim of the article is, first, to clarify the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration envisaged by Weiser. Second, the difficulties of understanding the everyday and weaving ubiquitous technologies into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it, as conceived by Weiser, are explored. The contributions of Anne Galloway, Paul Dourish and Philip Agre to creating an understanding of everyday life relevant to the development of ubiquitous computing are discussed, focusing on the notions of performative practice, embodied interaction and contextualisation. Third, it is argued that with the shift to the notion of ambient intelligence, the larger scale socio-economic and socio-political dimensions of context become more explicit, in contrast to the focus on the smaller scale anthropological study of social (mainly workplace) practices inherent in the concept of ubiquitous computing. This can be seen in the adoption of the concept of ambient intelligence within the European Union and in the focus on rebalancing (personal) privacy protection and (state) security in the wake of 11 September 2001. Fourth, the importance of adopting a futures-oriented approach to discussing the issues arising from the notions of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence is stressed, while the difficulty of trying to achieve societal foresight is acknowledged

    Presenting the networked home: a content analysis of promotion material of Ambient Intelligence applications

    Ambient Intelligence (AmI) for the home uses information and communication technologies to make users’ everyday life more comfortable. AmI is still in its developmental phase and is headed towards the first stages of diffusion. \ud Characteristics of AmI design can be observed, among others, in the promotion material of initial producers. A literature study revealed that AmI originally envisioned a central role for the user, convenience that AmI offers them and that attention should be paid to critical policy issues such as privacy and a potential loss of freedom. A content analysis of current promotion material of several high-tech companies revealed that these original ideas are not all reflected in the material. Attributes which were used most in the promotion material were ‘connectedness’, ‘control’, ‘easiness’ and ‘personalization’. An analysis of the pictures in the promotion material showed that almost half of the pictures contained no humans but appliances. These results only partly correspond to the original vision on AmI, since the emphasis is now on technology. The results represent a serious problem, since both users, as well as critical policy issues are underexposed in the current promotion material

    Episodic Reasoning for Vision-Based Human Action Recognition

    Smart Spaces, Ambient Intelligence, and Ambient Assisted Living are environmental paradigms that strongly depend on their capability to recognize human actions. While most solutions rest on sensor value interpretations and video analysis applications, few have realized the importance of incorporating common-sense capabilities to support the recognition process. Unfortunately, human action recognition cannot be successfully accomplished by only analyzing body postures. On the contrary, this task should be supported by profound knowledge of human agency nature and its tight connection to the reasons and motivations that explain it. The combination of this knowledge and the knowledge about how the world works is essential for recognizing and understanding human actions without committing common-senseless mistakes. This work demonstrates the impact that episodic reasoning has in improving the accuracy of a computer vision system for human action recognition. This work also presents formalization, implementation, and evaluation details of the knowledge model that supports the episodic reasoning
