The report starts by looking at the competing and overlapping definitions of creative industries, media and content industries. Chapter 1 investigates the fate of R&D and innovation in the creative industries and in the broader Telecom Media and Technology sectors. Chapter 2 summarizes past studies on innovation in distinct media and content industries (videogames, music recording and newspapers publishing) and draws some lessons from them. Chapter 3 delves more deeply into the specific case of cinema. This chapter investigates the film industry's complex and evolving relationship with technologies and technological inventions. Chapter 4 offers a short cross-comparison with R&D in the book publishing industry. Chapter 5 deals with policy issues triggered by the observed digital changes. Chapter 6 concludes with a brief assessment of EU strengths and weaknesses, and offers some recommendations.JRC.J.3-Information Societ

Development of the Global Film Industry

    Get PDF
"The global film industry has witnessed significant transformation in the past few years. Regions outside the US have begun to prosper while non-traditional production companies, such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share, and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analysing an increasingly globalised business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry such as production, distribution, and screening, this study takes a ‘big picture’ view encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and paying more attention to the coordinated development of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world.

The globalization of K-pop: The interplay of external and internal forces

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. On the industrial level, major forces that shape the music industry in which K-pop’s business operates are evaluated based on the framework of Porter’s Five Forces. External environmental analysis is followed by the review of the global strategies of major Korean entertainment companies in achieving their organizational objective of turning K-pop into a successful global business. We identify all the key value-creating activities ranging from talent acquisition to customer relationship management in the value chain of K-pop’s industry, and analyze how each of these activities have contributed to K-pop’s success in the global market. In conclusion, the recent success of K-pop on the global stage can be understood as the rewards for the capability of its internal strategy to anticipate and capitalize new opportunities in external environment

Enhancing Western E-commerce Expansion in China: Navigating Technical and Cultural Challenges through Effective Web Design

This master's dissertation explores the strategic use of website design to overcome challenges associated with Western e-commerce expansion into China. It investigates two primary dimensions: technical and cultural adaptation. Many Western e-commerce platforms have struggled in China due to inadequate adaptations to local market expectations. The research aims to provide valuable insights and practical guidance for Western e-commerce businesses aspiring to succeed in the Chinese market. It focuses on website design because of the crucial role it plays as a main tool for E-commerce companies to successfully reach its clients. At the same time, the research bridges a gap in the existing literature, which have predominantly focused on macro-level market strategies and regulatory considerations. The central research question driving this investigation is: to what extent does the alignment of website design with local cultural and technical contexts affect the success of Western e-commerce businesses in China? Employing a qualitative method of content analysis, the study evaluates 24 Western E-commerce companies based on a complementary cultural framework drawn from Hofstede’s (1980) and Schwartz’s (1992). To see the impact of the prominent depiction of local cultural and technical dimensions on the website performance metrics (traffic, pages viewed per visit, visit duration and bounce rate) a composite variable called ‘‘adaptation score’’ was calculated for each 24 Western E-commerce’s American websites and their overseas Chinese counterpart. Statistical analysis using IBM SPSS software reveals significant differences in the portrayal of Hierarchy and Harmony cultural dimensions through independent samples t-tests. Moreover, MANOVA confirms a significant association between adaptation levels and E-commerce website traffic and pages viewed per visit, offering empirical support for the significance of aligning the website design with the cultural and technical context of the target country

Several of the most known and discussed concepts of the digital age predated the digitalization itself and have been previously used in the “analogue times”. Other concepts were coined for the digital society but have transformed and are continuously transforming over time. This edited book selects some of these concepts and starts a time travel through their history, heritage, reinvention, and reinvestment in media and communication studies

The adoption intention of travel-related app: a framework integrating perceived characteristics of innovation and software quality

This thesis aims to analyze the views of customers who have great appetite for tourism on the tourism application. According to the perception characteristics of technology acceptance model, innovation diffusion theory and software quality model, the thesis sets up the research model and puts forward the corresponding research hypothesis on the combination of current research results. In the manner of questionnaire design and collection and data processing, data analysis and hypothesis verification will be conducted by the use of structural equation model. The research result implies that application design attributes and application performance features are key to promote the adoption of mobile travel application. In addition, this research broadens our horizons on the accidental impact of application attributes on adoption behavior through adding user gender as a variable to the model, and increases an awesome theoretical basis for future research in this field.

    Sustainability in the Global-Knowledge Economy

Knowledge affects all aspects of the economy, but digitalization probably represents the most ubiquitous of its appearances. This book analyzes, from a constructive point of view, some of its applications, extracting lessons to maximize its utility and exporting its use to other sectors. It also shows the caveats of its applications, allowing managers to learn its difficulties and how to overcome them from real-life cases. All the information is presented in an academic and rigorous way and represents an excellent starting point to study the effects of digitalization for both practitioners and researchers
