The (In)Efficiency of interaction
Evaluating higher-order functional programs through abstract machines inspired by the geometry of the interaction is known to induce space efficiencies, the price being time performances often poorer than those obtainable with traditional, environment-based, abstract machines. Although families of lambda-terms for which the former is exponentially less efficient than the latter do exist, it is currently unknown how general this phenomenon is, and how far the inefficiencies can go, in the worst case. We answer these questions formulating four different well-known abstract machines inside a common definitional framework, this way being able to give sharp results about the relative time efficiencies. We also prove that non-idempotent intersection type theories are able to precisely reflect the time performances of the interactive abstract machine, this way showing that its time-inefficiency ultimately descends from the presence of higher-order types

Proof Theoretic Concepts for the Semantics of Types and Concurrency
We present a method for providing semantic interpretations for languages with a type system featuring inheritance polymorphism. Our approach is illustrated on an extension of the language Fun of Cardelli and Wegner, which we interpret via a translation into an extended polymorphic lambda calculus. Our goal is to interpret inheritances in Fun via coercion functions which are definable in the target of the translation. Existing techniques in the theory of semantic domains can be then used to interpret the extended polymorphic lambda calculus, thus providing many models for the original language. This technique makes it possible to model a rich type discipline which includes parametric polymorphism and recursive types as well as inheritance.
A central difficulty in providing interpretations for explicit type disciplines featuring inheritance in the sense discussed in this paper arises from the fact that programs can type-check in more than one way. Since interpretations follow the type-checking derivations, coherence theorems are required: that is, one must prove that the meaning of a program does not depend on the way it was type-checked. The proof of such theorems for our proposed interpretation are the basic technical results of this paper. Interestingly, proving coherence in the presence of recursive types, variants, and abstract types forced us to reexamine fundamental equational properties that arise in proof theory (in the form of commutative reductions) and domain theory (in the form of strict vs. non-strict functions)
Preemptive type checking in dynamically typed programs
With the rise of languages such as JavaScript, dynamically typed languages have gained a strong foothold in the programming language landscape. These languages are very well suited for rapid prototyping and for use with agile programming methodologies. However, programmers would benefit from the ability to detect type errors in their code early, without imposing unnecessary restrictions on their programs.Here we describe a new type inference system that identifies potential type errors through a flow-sensitive static analysis. This analysis is invoked at a very late stage, after the compilation to bytecode and initialisation of the program. It computes for every expression the variable’s present (from the values that it has last been assigned) and future (with which it is used in the further program execution) types, respectively. Using this information, our mechanism inserts type checks at strategic points in the original program. We prove that these checks, inserted as early as possible, preempt type errors earlier than existing type systems. We further show that these checks do not change the semantics of programs that do not raise type errors.Preemptive type checking can be added to existing languages without the need to modify the existing runtime environment. We show this with an implementation for the Python language and demonstrate its effectiveness on a number of benchmarks
Lazy Evaluation: From natural semantics to a machine-checked compiler transformation
In order to solve a long-standing problem with list fusion, a new compiler transformation, \u27Call Arity\u27 is developed and implemented in the Haskell compiler GHC. It is formally proven to not degrade program performance; the proof is machine-checked using the interactive theorem prover Isabelle. To that end, a formalization of Launchbury`s Natural Semantics for Lazy Evaluation is modelled in Isabelle, including a correctness and adequacy proof
Foundations for programming and implementing effect handlers
First-class control operators provide programmers with an expressive and efficient
means for manipulating control through reification of the current control state as a first-class object, enabling programmers to implement their own computational effects and
control idioms as shareable libraries. Effect handlers provide a particularly structured
approach to programming with first-class control by naming control reifying operations
and separating from their handling.
This thesis is composed of three strands of work in which I develop operational
foundations for programming and implementing effect handlers as well as exploring
the expressive power of effect handlers.
The first strand develops a fine-grain call-by-value core calculus of a statically
typed programming language with a structural notion of effect types, as opposed to the
nominal notion of effect types that dominates the literature. With the structural approach,
effects need not be declared before use. The usual safety properties of statically typed
programming are retained by making crucial use of row polymorphism to build and
track effect signatures. The calculus features three forms of handlers: deep, shallow,
and parameterised. They each offer a different approach to manipulate the control state
of programs. Traditional deep handlers are defined by folds over computation trees,
and are the original con-struct proposed by Plotkin and Pretnar. Shallow handlers are
defined by case splits (rather than folds) over computation trees. Parameterised handlers
are deep handlers extended with a state value that is threaded through the folds over
computation trees. To demonstrate the usefulness of effects and handlers as a practical
programming abstraction I implement the essence of a small UNIX-style operating
system complete with multi-user environment, time-sharing, and file I/O.
The second strand studies continuation passing style (CPS) and abstract machine
semantics, which are foundational techniques that admit a unified basis for implementing deep, shallow, and parameterised effect handlers in the same environment. The
CPS translation is obtained through a series of refinements of a basic first-order CPS
translation for a fine-grain call-by-value language into an untyped language. Each refinement moves toward a more intensional representation of continuations eventually
arriving at the notion of generalised continuation, which admit simultaneous support for
deep, shallow, and parameterised handlers. The initial refinement adds support for deep
handlers by representing stacks of continuations and handlers as a curried sequence of
arguments. The image of the resulting translation is not properly tail-recursive, meaning some function application terms do not appear in tail position. To rectify this the
CPS translation is refined once more to obtain an uncurried representation of stacks
of continuations and handlers. Finally, the translation is made higher-order in order to
contract administrative redexes at translation time. The generalised continuation representation is used to construct an abstract machine that provide simultaneous support for
deep, shallow, and parameterised effect handlers. kinds of effect handlers.
The third strand explores the expressiveness of effect handlers. First, I show that
deep, shallow, and parameterised notions of handlers are interdefinable by way of typed
macro-expressiveness, which provides a syntactic notion of expressiveness that affirms
the existence of encodings between handlers, but it provides no information about the
computational content of the encodings. Second, using the semantic notion of expressiveness I show that for a class of programs a programming language with first-class
control (e.g. effect handlers) admits asymptotically faster implementations than possible in a language without first-class control
