    ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS: SOCIAL CAPITAL AND COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE APPROACH

    This study is aimed at developing the model of organizational effectiveness in university through social capital and competitive advantage. The populations of this study are the head of study programs and the structural officials in some Universities in Semarang. In this case, We used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in AMOS 21.0 program as the analysis tool. The result of the study and model analysis showed that even though the social capital had significant positive influenced to the competitive advantage in the university, the improvement of social capital and competitive advantage at university could not improve the university organizational effectiveness. Then, between two factors which influenced the competitive advantage (internal social capital and external social capital), it is obtained that external social capital got the dominant influenced factor to competitive advantage. The managerial implication suggested the policies should focus on improving the quality of cooperative relationships with external parties in the university

    This paper shows empirically that in an intra-industry oligopolistic scenario the location of a firm’s innovative activities plays an important role in determining its partner selection in R&D alliances. Such a role is mainly attributed to a strategic use of R&D alliances as a means to limit knowledge flows and protect competences, rather than to promote knowledge flows. By drawing on a novel dataset matching alliances and patent data for the European ICT industry, the econometric analysis shows that partners’ prior co-location (at both national and sub-national regional level), previous ties and technological overlap matter in the choice of partner, while common nationality has a negative impact on alliance formation.Alliances, strategy, efficiency, R&D location

    Network Advantage: Mediating Effect on Business Performance

    The aims of this research is to contribute to the literature and the conceptual model of the effect of relational capital on network advantage and business performance, the effect of network competence on network advantage and business performance, the effect of knowledge sharing on network advantage and business performance and the effect of network advantage and business performance. The number of samples in this study examined was 289 sample SMEs Furniture on Central Java Indonesia. The purposive sampling technique was used to the data collection methods. The results of this study showed that relational capital is a significant negative effect on business performance and positive significance on network advantage. Network competence is a significant effect on business performance and negative impact on network advantage. Network competency is a significant effect on business performance and network advantage. Relational capabilities is a significant effect on business performance and network advantage. Network advantage is a significant effect on business performance.JEL Codes - M3

    Common Territory? : Comparing the IMP Approach with Economic Geography

    The IMP research tradition has always been open to the cross-fertilisation of ideas with other social science disciplines that study similar phenomena. Recent years have seen a growing interest among IMP researchers in phenomena such as regional strategic networks, spatial clusters and innovation and new business development in networks. IMP papers published on these topics are increasingly citing conceptual frameworks and empirical findings from the field of economic geography. This paper discusses the development of IMP thought and the development of thought in economic geography (particularly evolutionary economic geography), and compares their approaches to the analysis of regional phenomena. The goal is to identify key ideas from economic geography that have been under-exploited in IMP research, in order to suggest original new approaches available to IMP researchers interested in these fields. A number of such ideas are explored: proximity as a multi-dimensional and multi-faceted concept; the distinction between, and relative importance of, learning activities arising automatically from being embedded in a community (local or regional buzz) and learning activities arising from positive investment in channels of communication (pipelines); the concept of relational capital developed by economic geographers; and, conceptualisations of externalities commonly used in the study of spatial clustersPeer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
