Suppression of line voltage related distortion in current controlled grid connected inverters
The influence of selected control strategies on the level
of low-order current harmonic distortion generated by an inverter
connected to a distorted grid is investigated through a combination
of theoretical and experimental studies. A detailed theoretical
analysis, based on the concept of harmonic impedance, establishes
the suitability of inductor current feedback versus output
current feedback with respect to inverter power quality. Experimental
results, obtained from a purpose-built 500-W, three-level,
half-bridge inverter with an L-C-L output filter, verify the efficacy of inductor current as the feedback variable, yielding an
output current total harmonic distortion (THD) some 29% lower
than that achieved using output current feedback. A feed-forward
grid voltage disturbance rejection scheme is proposed as a means to
further reduce the level of low-order current harmonic distortion.
Results obtained from an inverter with inductor current feedback
and optimized feed-forward disturbance rejection show a THD of
just 3% at full-load, representing an improvement of some 53% on
the same inverter with output current feedback and no feed-forward
compensation. Significant improvements in THD were also
achieved across the entire load range. It is concluded that the use
of inductor current feedback and feed-forward voltage disturbance
rejection represent cost–effect mechanisms for achieving improved
output current quality
New Modulation Technique to Mitigate Common Mode Voltage Effects in Star-Connected Five-Phase AC Drives
Star-connected multiphase AC drives are being considered for electromovility applications such as electromechanical actuators (EMA), where high power density and fault tolerance is demanded. As for three-phase systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue for multiphase drives. CMV leads to shaft voltages between rotor and stator windings, generating bearing currents which accelerate bearing degradation and produce high electromagnetic interferences (EMI). CMV effects can be mitigated by using appropriate modulation techniques. Thus, this work proposes a new Hybrid PWM algorithm that effectively reduces CMV in five-phase AC electric drives, improving their reliability. All the mathematical background required to understand the proposal, i.e., vector transformations, vector sequences and calculation of analytical expressions for duty cycle determination are detailed. Additionally, practical details that simplify the implementation of the proposal in an FPGA are also included. This technique, HAZSL5M5-PWM, extends the linear range of the AZSL5M5-PWM modulation, providing a full linear range. Simulation results obtained in an accurate multiphase EMA model are provided, showing the validity of the proposed modulation approach. This work has been supported in part by the Government of the Basque Country within the fund for research groups of the Basque University system IT978-16 and in part by the Government of the Basque Country within the research program ELKARTEK as the project ENSOL (KK-2018/00040)
A multifunctional dynamic voltage restorer for power quality improvement
Power quality is a major concern in electrical power systems. The power quality disturbances such as sags, swells, harmonic distortion and other interruptions have an impact on the electrical devices and machines and in severe cases can cause serious damages. Therefore it is necessary to recognize and compensate all types of disturbances at an earliest time to ensure normal and efficient operation of the power system. To solve these problems, many types of power devices are used. At the present time, one of those devices, Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is the most efficient and effective device used in power distribution systems. In this paper, design and modeling of a new structure and a new control method of multifunctional DVRs for voltage quality correction are presented. The new control method was built in the stationary frame by combining Proportional Resonant controllers and Sequence-Decouple Resonant controllers. The performance of the device and this method under different conditions such as voltage swell, voltage sag due to symmetrical and unsymmetrical short circuit, starting of motors, and voltage distortion are described. Simulation result show the superior capability of the proposed DVR to improve power quality under different operating conditions and the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed new DVR controller is able to detect the voltage disturbances and control the converter to inject appropriate voltages independently for each phase and compensate to load voltage through three single-phase transformers.Web of Science116art. no. 135

Harmonic current extraction of shunt active power filter based on prediction current technique - Hysteresis PWM
Due to the wide spread of power electronics equipment in modern electrical systems, the increase of the
harmonics disturbance in the ac mains currents has became a major concern due to the adverse effects on all

This paper presents the Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) to compensate the generated harmonics by 3-phase Rectifier Bridge fed R-L load. The harmonic current extraction is based on prediction current extraction technique -hysteresis PWM generation pattern
Passivity-based harmonic control through series/parallel damping of an H-bridge rectifier
Nowadays the H-bridge is one of the preferred solutions to connect DC loads or distributed sources to the single-phase grid. The control aims are: sinusoidal grid current with unity power factor and optimal DC voltage regulation capability. These objectives should be satisfied, regardless the conditions of the grid, the DC load/source and the converter nonlinearities. In this paper a passivity-based approach is thoroughly investigated proposing a damping-based solution for the error dynamics. Practical experiments with a real converter validate the analysis.
Power Quality Enhancement in Electricity Grids with Wind Energy Using Multicell Converters and Energy Storage
In recent years, the wind power industry is experiencing a rapid growth and more wind farms with larger size wind turbines are being connected to the power system. While this contributes to the overall security of electricity supply, large-scale deployment of wind energy into the grid also presents many technical challenges. Most of these challenges are one way or another, related to the variability and intermittent nature of wind and affect the power quality of the distribution grid. Power quality relates to factors that cause variations in the voltage level and frequency as well as distortion in the voltage and current waveforms due to wind variability which produces both harmonics and inter-harmonics. The main motivation behind work is to propose a new topology of the static AC/DC/AC multicell converter to improve the power quality in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems. Serial switching cells have the ability to achieve a high power with lower-size components and improve the voltage waveforms at the input and output of the converter by increasing the number of cells. Furthermore, a battery energy storage system is included and a power management strategy is designed to ensure the continuity of power supply and consequently the autonomy of the proposed system. The simulation results are presented for a 149.2 kW wind turbine induction generator system and the results obtained demonstrate the reduced harmonics, improved transient response, and reference tracking of the voltage output of the wind energy conversion system.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Modulation and Control Techniques for Performance Improvement of Micro Grid Tie Inverters
The concept of microgrids is a new building block of smart grid that acts as a single controllable entity which allows reliable interconnection of distributed energy resources and loads and provides alternative way of their integration into power system. Due to its specifics, microgrids require different control strategies and dynamics of regulation as compared to ones used in conventional utility grids. All types of power converters used in microgrid share commonalities which potentially affect high frequency modes of microgrid in same manner. There are numerous unique design requirements imposed on microgrid tie inverters, which are dictated by the nature of the microgrid system and bring major challenges that are reviewed and further analyzed in this work. This work introduces, performs a detailed study on, and implements nonconventional control and modulation techniques leading to performance improvement of microgrid tie inverters in respect to aforementioned challenges
