    Impact of ICT Based Education on the Information Society

    In the last ten years the continuous growth of internet penetration and the wider palette for spreading ICT tools have changed the availability and quantity of information, communications methods and the learning processes. ICT tools are already extensively used in education and we have reached the turning point when, after the era of PCs and laptops, e-learning based on internet connected tablet PCs is here. This educational model, developed on a radically new basis, poses a number of questions and is going to affect social processes at macroeconomic levels. We analysed the possible future impacts of widespread ICT tools in education by applying the Futures Wheel method. This method gives a base for scenario building. Of the possible impacts of ICT tools, we highlighted two: the aspect of physical, mental and social existence and that of knowledge-searching and sharing. On these grounds, we drew up four scenarios: 1. Healthy, knowledge based net-society, 2. Antisocial impersonal knowledge-society, 3. Lonely ill rebels, 4. Limited information-society

    Collaborative behavior, performance and engagement with visual analytics tasks using mobile devices

    Interactive visualizations are external tools that can support users’ exploratory activities. Collaboration can bring benefits to the exploration of visual representations or visu‐ alizations. This research investigates the use of co‐located collaborative visualizations in mobile devices, how users working with two different modes of interaction and view (Shared or Non‐Shared) and how being placed at various position arrangements (Corner‐to‐Corner, Face‐to‐Face, and Side‐by‐Side) affect their knowledge acquisition, engagement level, and learning efficiency. A user study is conducted with 60 partici‐ pants divided into 6 groups (2 modes×3 positions) using a tool that we developed to support the exploration of 3D visual structures in a collaborative manner. Our results show that the shared control and view version in the Side‐by‐Side position is the most favorable and can improve task efficiency.     Expectations, Realizations, and Approval of Tablet Computers in an Educational Setting

    This is the accepted and refereed manuscript to the articleThe introduction of new technologies in classrooms is often thought to offer great potential for advancing learning. In this article, we investigate the relationship between such expectations and the post-implementation evaluation of a new technology in an educational setting. Building on psychological research, we argue that i) high expectations (ex ante) can undermine the approval ratings of new technologies (ex post); and ii) individuals’ post-implementation evaluations are more likely to exceed their expectations when they can exert power over the introduction of a new technology. We test these predictions on a sample of 750 respondents from primary and secondary schools in Flanders with and without tablet computers.     THE EFFECT OF THE COLLABORATIVE TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED ACTIVITIES ON STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION

    The collaborative technology-enhanced activities developed for Algorithm Calculation course in Medical engineering subject-discipline and Computer Workshop courses in two Computer and IT engineering subject-disciplines in two consecutive semesters. Mixed-method research design was used in this study .Content of each course was used in order to develop the activities. Motivational Strategies for Leaning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was utilized for collecting quantitative data while qualitative data was collected using interview protocol for further investigation. The analyses showed that the “intrinsic value” was the category with the higher mean score for all students with three different subject-disciplines which is followed by cognitive strategy use. Moreover, the results showed that the students’ level of anxiety decreased after using the activities. Analysis of interview data showed that the students emphasized on the role of activities in terms of increasing their “collaboration” with their peers and instructor. Moreover, they perceived that the activities make the course more interesting for them. They also explained that using computerized devices especially mobile ones facilitated their communication and material-sharing. &nbsp

Az IKT-eszközök elterjedtségének vizsgálatánál meghatározó szerepet játszik a technológia jelenléte mellett a társadalom befogadóképessége. A technológia és társadalom kapcsolatát különböző módszerekkel és modellekkel mutatják be, melyek indokolják ezen eszközök növekvő használatának szükségességét. Ebben a tanulmányban a modellekből és a felmérésekből összeállított tényezők beépítésével és az általuk feldolgozott kérdőívek elemzése által kirajzolódnak minták és olyan összefüggések, amelyek magyarázatot adhatnak a különböző eszközhasználat okainak megértésére. _____ In their study the authors deal with the desktop computers (Desktop), laptops (notebooks and netbooks), smartphones and tablet machines among of information and communication technology (hereinafter referred to as ICT) tools. The capacity of society is one of the key elements in the examination of spread of ICT. The relationship between technology and society is presented with different methods and models that are justified by the need for increasing the use of these devices.     Teachers' perceptions of one-to-one computing effect on learning environment in Qatari secondary schools

    The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of one-to-one computing on the learning environment based upon teachers’ perceptions in Qatari secondary schools implementing the E-Schoolbag project (phase one and phase two). A questionnaire was employed to collect all teachers’ responses from ten secondary schools utilizing Tablet PC in the one-to-one computing initiative. The questionnaire assessed teachers’ perceptions about one-to-one computing in terms of: (a) student use, (b) perception of impact, (c) advantages of one-to-one computing, (d) support, (e) and classroom management issues. Teachers were found relatively positive toward the one-to-one computing initiative. Inferential analysis found no statistically significant difference for gender and years of experience in terms of perceived advantages and impact of one-to-one computing

    Digital Education Policies in Europe and Beyond: Key Design Principles for More Effective Policies

    This report offers policy-makers in digital education evidence on how, at the national or regional level, policies can be designed and implemented to foster digital-age learning. The presented findings are the result of a mixed methodological design comprising four parts: desk-research on digital education policy, the identification of national and regional policies worldwide, six in-depth case studies, and an expert workshop. The discussion of the cases identified and studied in depth leads to the formulation of eight core-guiding principles, which can serve as a reference point for policy-makers for the design and implementation of digital education policies: 1. Follow a holistic approach targeting systemic change; 2. Establish both a long-term vision and short-term achievable goals; 3. Deploy technology as a means not an end; 4. Embrace experimentation, risk-taking and failure; 5. Consider the importance and the limits of impact assessment; 6. Involve all stakeholders in a structured dialogue; 7.     Investigating the individual trust and school performance in semi-virtual collaboration groups

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between individual trust of students in computer supported semi-virtual collaboration groups and student’s performance in school. Design/methodology/approach: Longitudinal questionnaires and interviews are conducted during the case study. By analyzing the data from the questionnaires and the grade earned by the students, the sample students are ranked with respect to the trust level and individual performance. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to compare individual trust level and performance in the computer supported semi-virtual collaborative environment. Findings: The distribution of an individual’s trust level is roughly consistent with the distribution of the individual’s performance in the collaboration. Besides, the relationship between a student’s trust level and the student’s performance is positively correlated. Research limitations/implications: This study integrates the issues of trust, school performance, and collaboration in an educational context. Furthermore, the conclusions drawn from this paper extend the literature of multiple disciplines including education, management, and psychology. Practical implications: The conclusions could apply in the fields of education and management since the analysis revealed the relationship between an individual’s trust level and their performance. Originality/value: This study contributes to the field of trust and collaboration research with a link to trust development and performance. The study also provides an insight into how to successfully improve the performance of student semi-virtual collaboration groups
