Polynomial-based non-uniform interpolatory subdivision with features control
Starting from a well-known construction of polynomial-based interpolatory 4-point schemes, in this paper we present
an original affine combination of quadratic polynomial samples that leads to a non-uniform 4-point scheme with edge
parameters. This blending-type formulation is then further generalized to provide a powerful subdivision algorithm
that combines the fairing curve of a non-uniform refinement with the advantages of a shape-controlled interpolation
method and an arbitrary point insertion rule. The result is a non-uniform interpolatory 4-point scheme that is unique
in combining a number of distinctive properties. In fact it generates visually-pleasing limit curves where special
features ranging from cusps and flat edges to point/edge tension effects may be included without creating undesired
undulations. Moreover such a scheme is capable of inserting new points at any positions of existing intervals, so that
the most convenient parameter values may be chosen as well as the intervals for insertion.
Such a fully flexible curve scheme is a fundamental step towards the construction of high-quality interpolatory subdivision surfaces with features control

TVL<sub>1</sub>shape approximation from scattered 3D data
With the emergence in 3D sensors such as laser scanners and 3D reconstruction from cameras, large 3D point clouds can now be sampled from physical objects within a scene. The raw 3D samples delivered by these sensors however, contain only a limited degree of information about the environment the objects exist in, which means that further geometrical high-level modelling is essential. In addition, issues like sparse data measurements, noise, missing samples due to occlusion, and the inherently huge datasets involved in such representations makes this task extremely challenging. This paper addresses these issues by presenting a new 3D shape modelling framework for samples acquired from 3D sensor. Motivated by the success of nonlinear kernel-based approximation techniques in the statistics domain, existing methods using radial basis functions are applied to 3D object shape approximation. The task is framed as an optimization problem and is extended using non-smooth L1 total variation regularization. Appropriate convex energy functionals are constructed and solved by applying the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers approach, which is then extended using Gauss-Seidel iterations. This significantly lowers the computational complexity involved in generating 3D shape from 3D samples, while both numerical and qualitative analysis confirms the superior shape modelling performance of this new framework compared with existing 3D shape reconstruction techniques
Scalar and Parametric Spline Curves and Surfaces
A common engineering task consists of interpolating a set of discrete points that arise from measurements and experiments. Another traditional requirement implies creating a curve that mimics a given array of points, namely, a polyline. Any of these problems require building an analytical representation of the given discrete set of points. If the geometrical shape represented by the input polyline is complicated, then we may expect that a global interpolant or polynomial will be of a high degree, to honor all imposed constraints, which makes its use prohibited. Indeed, a global interpolant often experiences inflection points and sudden changes in curvature. To avoid these drawbacks, we often seek solving the interpolation/approximation problem using piecewise polynomial functions called “splines.

New strategies for curve and arbitrary-topology surface constructions for design
This dissertation presents some novel constructions for curves and surfaces with arbitrary topology in the context of geometric modeling.
In particular, it deals mainly with three intimately connected topics that are of interest in both theoretical and applied research: subdivision surfaces, non-uniform local interpolation (in both univariate and bivariate cases), and spaces of generalized splines.
Specifically, we describe a strategy for the integration of subdivision surfaces in computer-aided design systems and provide examples to show the effectiveness of its implementation.
Moreover, we present a construction of locally supported, non-uniform, piecewise polynomial univariate interpolants of minimum degree with respect to other prescribed design parameters (such as support width, order of continuity and order of approximation).
Still in the setting of non-uniform local interpolation, but in the case of surfaces, we devise a novel parameterization strategy that, together with a suitable patching technique, allows us to define composite surfaces that interpolate given arbitrary-topology meshes or curve networks and satisfy both requirements of regularity and aesthetic shape quality usually needed in the CAD modeling framework.
Finally, in the context of generalized splines, we propose an approach for the construction of the optimal normalized totally positive (B-spline) basis, acknowledged as the best basis of representation for design purposes, as well as a numerical procedure for checking the existence of such a basis in a given generalized spline space.
All the constructions presented here have been devised keeping in mind also the importance of application and implementation, and of the related requirements that numerical procedures must satisfy, in particular in the CAD context

A Knowledge Integration Framework for 3D Shape Reconstruction
The modern emergence of automation in many industries has given impetus to extensive research into mobile robotics. Novel perception technologies now enable cars to drive autonomously, tractors to till a field automatically and underwater robots to construct pipelines. An essential requirement to facilitate both perception and autonomous navigation is the analysis of the 3D environment using sensors like laser scanners or stereo cameras. 3D sensors generate a very large number of 3D data points in sampling object shapes within an environment, but crucially do not provide any intrinsic information about the environment in which the robots operate with. This means unstructured 3D samples must be processed by application-specific models to enable a robot, for instance, to detect and identify objects and infer the scene geometry for path-planning more efficiently than by using raw 3D data. This thesis specifically focuses on the fundamental task of 3D shape reconstruction and modelling by presenting a new knowledge integration framework for unstructured 3D samples. The novelty lies in the representation of surfaces by algebraic functions with limited support, which enables the extraction of smooth consistent shapes from noisy samples with a heterogeneous density. Moreover, many surfaces in urban environments can reasonably be assumed to be planar, and the framework exploits this knowledge to enable effective noise suppression without loss of detail. This is achieved by using a convex optimization technique which has linear computational complexity. Thus is much more efficient than existing solutions. The new framework has been validated by critical experimental analysis and evaluation and has been shown to increase the accuracy of the reconstructed shape significantly compared to state-of-the-art methods. Applying this new knowledge integration framework means that less accurate, low-cost 3D sensors can be employed without sacrificing the high demands that 3D perception must achieve. This links well into the area of robotic inspection, as for example regarding small drones that use inaccurate and lightweight image sensors
