Working Report #1: Service Model Accessibility (Service Provider Perspectives)

    Get PDF
This report examines the differences in service accessibility across central, integrated, and school/community based child welfare service delivery models including geographic proximity to families, acceptability of the setting to families, and accessibility expectations of service providers. Results suggest that accessibility characteristics of the model can make a significant difference to front-line service delivery from the perspective of front-line protection workers. A defining feature of the community and school based child welfare models was increased accessibility for families and workers. Through making themselves more accessible, the community and school based settings had some significant service delivery advantages including more regular, varied, and timely contact with children and families. It seems likely that location along with a culture of accessibility has the potential to contribute to key child protection goals

An evaluation of a multi-site community pharmacy based chronic obstructive pulmonary disease support service

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive chronic condition which can be effectively managed by smoking cessation, optimising prescribed therapy and providing treatment to prevent chest infections from causing hospitalisation. The government agenda in the UK is for community pharmacists to become involved in chronic disease management and COPD is one area where they are ideally located to provide a comprehensive service. Objective To evaluate the effect of a community pharmacy based COPD service on patient outcomes. Method Patients in one UK location were recruited over a 3 month period to receive a community pharmacy based COPD support service consisting of signposting to or provision of smoking cessation service, therapy optimisation, and recommendation to obtain a rescue pack containing steroid and antibiotic to prevent hospitalisation as a result of chest infection. Data was collected over a six month period for all recruited patients. Appropriate clinical outcomes, patient reported medication adherence, quality of life and NHS resource utilisation were measured. Key findings 306 patients accessed the service and full data to enable comparison before and after was available for 137. Significant improvements in patient reported adherence, utilisation of rescue packs, quality of life and a reduction in routine GP visits were identified. The intervention cost was estimated to be off-set by reductions in the use of other NHS services (GP and A&E visits and hospital admissions). Conclusion Results suggest that the service improved patient medicine taking behaviours and that it was cost-effective

Active User Authentication for Smartphones: A Challenge Data Set and Benchmark Results

In this paper, automated user verification techniques for smartphones are investigated. A unique non-commercial dataset, the University of Maryland Active Authentication Dataset 02 (UMDAA-02) for multi-modal user authentication research is introduced. This paper focuses on three sensors - front camera, touch sensor and location service while providing a general description for other modalities. Benchmark results for face detection, face verification, touch-based user identification and location-based next-place prediction are presented, which indicate that more robust methods fine-tuned to the mobile platform are needed to achieve satisfactory verification accuracy. The dataset will be made available to the research community for promoting additional research.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. Best poster award at BTAS 201

Socialization is one method that is often used to expand knowledge, technology, and innovation results. In its development, socialization has penetrated various aspects, including community service. Community service is one of the mandatory activities held every year. The intent and purpose of community service is to assist the community in overcoming problems and increasing knowledge of the community. Therefore socialization is considered appropriate to be used as a method of community service. The location of socialization is essential to choose according to the needs and benefits obtained later. The choice of location for socialization in this community service activity is based on the functions and duties of the government agency that oversees the problem of research results, namely the Palembang City Research and Development Agency. Through this activity, the Palembang City Research and Development Agency will be able to provide more significant benefits to the community later

Conceptual Framework of Community Based Location Specific Services for Improved Service Delivery

    Get PDF
Community Based Location Service (CBLS) is the provision of information about services based on the geographical location of subscriber’s mobile phone towards the development of the community they are in. With the increase in mobile phones penetration, citizens can participate actively in providing relevant information to assist in the provision of services and infrastructure in the country through their mobile devices. This paper proposes a framework that will improve services and provide better infrastructure to developing countries. It hinges on four major technologies: location-based information, crowdsourcing, mobile communication devices and volunteerism. This framework takes into consideration the importance of motivating the crowd to participate in the crowdsourcing platform. Therefore the paper further investigates the willingness of the crowd to participate in the proposed CBLS crowdsourcing drive. The survey carried out indicates that 89% of the respondents want such location-based community services while 84% are willing to participate in CBLS once deployed. Services of great importance to the respondents are electricity and education while the major motivational factor for them is their ability to solve the problems and challenges in their community and also a sense of responsibility. Three prototypes mobile applications on the proposed CBLS platform are also presented

Social and place-focused communities in location-based online social networks

Thanks to widely available, cheap Internet access and the ubiquity of smartphones, millions of people around the world now use online location-based social networking services. Understanding the structural properties of these systems and their dependence upon users' habits and mobility has many potential applications, including resource recommendation and link prediction. Here, we construct and characterise social and place-focused graphs by using longitudinal information about declared social relationships and about users' visits to physical places collected from a popular online location-based social service. We show that although the social and place-focused graphs are constructed from the same data set, they have quite different structural properties. We find that the social and location-focused graphs have different global and meso-scale structure, and in particular that social and place-focused communities have negligible overlap. Consequently, group inference based on community detection performed on the social graph alone fails to isolate place-focused groups, even though these do exist in the network. By studying the evolution of tie structure within communities, we show that the time period over which location data are aggregated has a substantial impact on the stability of place-focused communities, and that information about place-based groups may be more useful for user-centric applications than that obtained from the analysis of social communities alone.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

Fatigue Risks in the Connections of Sign Support Structures

    Get PDF
This research effort develops a reliability-based approach for prescribing inspection intervals for mast-arm sign support structures corresponding to user-specified levels of fatigue-induced fracture risk. The resulting level of risk for a particular structure is dependent upon its geographical location, the type of connection it contains, the orientation of its mast-arm relative to north and the number of years it has been in service. The results of this research effort indicate that implementation of state-of-the-art reliability-based assessment procedures can contribute very valuable procedures for assigning inspection protocols (i.e. inspection intervals) that are based upon probabilities of finding fatigue-induced cracking in these structures. The engineering community can use the results of this research effort to design inspection intervals based upon risk and thereby better align inspection needs with limited fiscal and human resources

Evaluation of yasmine’s adventures: exploring the socio-cultural potential of location aware multimedia stories

    Get PDF
This paper describes Yasmine’s Adventures, a location aware multi‐ media story designed as a location based service for a museum. Yasmine’s Adventures follows a young local girl (Yasmine) through a series of short animated adventures, tailored specifically to engage visitors in exploring the rela‐ tively neglected streets of the area in which the museum is situated. Yasmine’s perceptions of the landmarks, identified by community members themselves, reflect the real concerns of the community. Results from the evaluation of the user’s experience suggest location connection and perception changes when loca‐ tive media narratives include learning, understanding and discovery elements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
