    Low Cost Quality of Service Multicast Routing in High Speed Networks

    Many of the services envisaged for high speed networks, such as B-ISDN/ATM, will support real-time applications with large numbers of users. Examples of these types of application range from those used by closed groups, such as private video meetings or conferences, where all participants must be known to the sender, to applications used by open groups, such as video lectures, where partcipants need not be known by the sender. These types of application will require high volumes of network resources in addition to the real-time delay constraints on data delivery. For these reasons, several multicast routing heuristics have been proposed to support both interactive and distribution multimedia services, in high speed networks. The objective of such heuristics is to minimise the multicast tree cost while maintaining a real-time bound on delay. Previous evaluation work has compared the relative average performance of some of these heuristics and concludes that they are generally efficient, although some perform better for small multicast groups and others perform better for larger groups. Firstly, we present a detailed analysis and evaluation of some of these heuristics which illustrates that in some situations their average performance is reversed; a heuristic that in general produces efficient solutions for small multicasts may sometimes produce a more efficient solution for a particular large multicast, in a specific network. Also, in a limited number of cases using Dijkstra's algorithm produces the best result. We conclude that the efficiency of a heuristic solution depends on the topology of both the network and the multicast, and that it is difficult to predict. Because of this unpredictability we propose the integration of two heuristics with Dijkstra's shortest path tree algorithm to produce a hybrid that consistently generates efficient multicast solutions for all possible multicast groups in any network. These heuristics are based on Dijkstra's algorithm which maintains acceptable time complexity for the hybrid, and they rarely produce inefficient solutions for the same network/multicast. The resulting performance attained is generally good and in the rare worst cases is that of the shortest path tree. The performance of our hybrid is supported by our evaluation results. Secondly, we examine the stability of multicast trees where multicast group membership is dynamic. We conclude that, in general, the more efficient the solution of a heuristic is, the less stable the multicast tree will be as multicast group membership changes. For this reason, while the hybrid solution we propose might be suitable for use with closed user group multicasts, which are likely to be stable, we need a different approach for open user group multicasting, where group membership may be highly volatile. We propose an extension to an existing heuristic that ensures multicast tree stability where multicast group membership is dynamic. Although this extension decreases the efficiency of the heuristics solutions, its performance is significantly better than that of the worst case, a shortest path tree. Finally, we consider how we might apply the hybrid and the extended heuristic in current and future multicast routing protocols for the Internet and for ATM Networks.

    Scalable on-demand content delivery systems, designed to effectively handle increasing request rates, typically use service aggregation or content replication techniques. Service aggregation relies on one-to-many communication techniques, such as multicast, to efficiently deliver content from a single sender to multiple receivers. With replication, multiple geographically distributed replicas of the service or content share the load of processing client requests and enable delivery from a nearby server.Previous scalable protocols for downloading large, popular files from a single server include batching and cyclic multicast. Analytic lower bounds developed in this thesis show that neither of these protocols consistently yields performance close to optimal. New hybrid protocols are proposed that achieve within 20% of the optimal delay in homogeneous systems, as well as within 25% of the optimal maximum client delay in all heterogeneous scenarios considered.In systems utilizing both service aggregation and replication, well-designed policies determining which replica serves each request must balance the objectives of achieving high locality of service, and high efficiency of service aggregation. By comparing classes of policies, using both analysis and simulations, this thesis shows that there are significant performance advantages in using current system state information (rather than only proximities and average loads) and in deferring selection decisions when possible. Most of these performance gains can be achieved using only “local” (rather than global) request information.Finally, this thesis proposes adaptations of already proposed peer-assisted download techniques to support a streaming (rather than download) service, enabling playback to begin well before the entire media file is received. These protocols split each file into pieces, which can be downloaded from multiple sources, including other clients downloading the same file. Using simulations, a candidate protocol is presented and evaluated. The protocol includes both a piece selection technique that effectively mediates the conflict between achieving high piece diversity and the in-order requirements of media file playback, as well as a simple on-line rule for deciding when playback can safely commence

Previous evaluation work has compared the relative average performance of some of these heuristics and concludes that they are generally efficient. This thesis presents a detailed analysis and evaluation of these heuristics which illustrate that in some situations their average performance is prone to wide variance for a particular multicast in a specific network. It concludes that the efficiency of an heuristic solution depends on the topology of both the network and the multicast, which is difficult to predict. The integration of two heuristics with Dijkstras shortest path tree algorithm is proposed, to produce a hybrid that consistently generates efficient multicast solutions for all possible multicast groups in any network. The evaluation results show good performance over a wide range of networks (flat and hierarchical) and multicast groups, within differing delay bounds. The more efficient the multicast tree is, the less stable it will be as multicast group membership changes. An efficient heuristic is extended to ensure multicast tree stability where multicast group membership is dynamic. This extension decreases the efficiency of the heuristics solutions, although they remain significantly cheaper than the worst case, a shortest delay path tree. This thesis also discusses how the hybrid and the extended heuristic might be applied to multicast routing protocols for the Internet and ATM Networks. Additionally, the behaviour of the heuristics is examined in networks that use a single link metric to calculate multicast trees and concludes one of the heuristics may be of benefit in such networks

    Performance Evaluation of Specialized Hardware for Fast Global Operations on Distributed Memory Multicomputers

    Workstation cluster multicomputers are increasingly being applied for solving scientific problems that require massive computing power. Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is a popular message-passing model used to program these clusters. One of the major performance limiting factors for cluster multicomputers is their inefficiency in performing parallel program operations involving collective communications. These operations include synchronization, global reduction, broadcast/multicast operations and orderly access to shared global variables. Hall has demonstrated that a .secondary network with wide tree topology and centralized coordination processors (COP) could improve the performance of global operations on a variety of distributed architectures [Hall94a]. My hypothesis was that the efficiency of many PVM applications on workstation clusters could be significantly improved by utilizing a COP system for collective communication operations. To test my hypothesis, I interfaced COP system with PVM. The interface software includes a virtual memory-mapped secondary network interface driver, and a function library which allows to use COP system in place of PVM function calls in application programs. My implementation makes it possible to easily port any existing PVM applications to perform fast global operations using the COP system. To evaluate the performance improvements of using a COP system, I measured cost of various PVM global functions, derived the cost of equivalent COP library global functions, and compared the results. To analyze the cost of global operations on overall execution time of applications, I instrumented a complex molecular dynamics PVM application and performed measurements. The measurements were performed for a sample cluster size of 5 and for message sizes up to 16 kilobytes. The comparison of PVM and COP system global operation performance clearly demonstrates that the COP system can speed up a variety of global operations involving small-to-medium sized messages by factors of 5-25. Analysis of the example application for a sample cluster size of 5 show that speedup provided by my global function libraries and the COP system reduces overall execution time for this and similar applications by above 1.5 times. Additionally, the performance improvement seen by applications increases as the cluster size increases, thus providing a scalable solution for performing global operations

    An overview of distributed microgrid state estimation and control for smart grids

Given the significant concerns regarding carbon emission from the fossil fuels, global warming and energy crisis, the renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) are going to be integrated in the smart grid. This grid can spread the intelligence of the energy distribution and control system from the central unit to the long-distance remote areas, thus enabling accurate state estimation (SE) and wide-area real-time monitoring of these intermittent energy sources. In contrast to the traditional methods of SE, this paper proposes a novel accuracy dependent Kalman filter (KF) based microgrid SE for the smart grid that uses typical communication systems. Then this article proposes a discrete-time linear quadratic regulation to control the state deviations of the microgrid incorporating multiple DERs. Therefore, integrating these two approaches with application to the smart grid forms a novel contributions in green energy and control research communities. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed KF based microgrid SE and control algorithm provides an accurate SE and control compared with the existing method

    Broadcast-oriented wireless network-on-chip : fundamentals and feasibility

Successive CMP generations integrate a larger number of cores seeking higher performance with a reasonable cost envelope. For this trend to continue, however, important scalability issues need to be solved at different levels of design. Scaling the interconnect fabric is a grand challenge by itself, as new Network-on-Chip (NoC) proposals need to overcome the performance hurdles found when dealing with the increasingly variable and heterogeneous communication demands of manycore processors. Fast and flexible NoC solutions are needed to prevent communication become a performance bottleneck, situation that would severely limit the design space at the architectural level and eventually lead to the use of software frameworks that are slow, inefficient, or less programmable. The emergence of novel interconnect technologies has opened the door to a plethora of new NoCs promising greater scalability and architectural flexibility. In particular, wireless on-chip communication has garnered considerable attention due to its inherent broadcast capabilities, low latency, and system-level simplicity. Most of the resulting Wireless Network-on-Chip (WNoC) proposals have set the focus on leveraging the latency advantage of this paradigm by creating multiple wireless channels to interconnect far-apart cores. This strategy is effective as the complement of wired NoCs at moderate scales, but is likely to be overshadowed at larger scales by technologies such as nanophotonics unless bandwidth is unrealistically improved. This dissertation presents the concept of Broadcast-Oriented Wireless Network-on-Chip (BoWNoC), a new approach that attempts to foster the inherent simplicity, flexibility, and broadcast capabilities of the wireless technology by integrating one on-chip antenna and transceiver per processor core. This paradigm is part of a broader hybrid vision where the BoWNoC serves latency-critical and broadcast traffic, tightly coupled to a wired plane oriented to large flows of data. By virtue of its scalable broadcast support, BoWNoC may become the key enabler of a wealth of unconventional hardware architectures and algorithmic approaches, eventually leading to a significant improvement of the performance, energy efficiency, scalability and programmability of manycore chips. The present work aims not only to lay the fundamentals of the BoWNoC paradigm, but also to demonstrate its viability from the electronic implementation, network design, and multiprocessor architecture perspectives. An exploration at the physical level of design validates the feasibility of the approach at millimeter-wave bands in the short term, and then suggests the use of graphene-based antennas in the terahertz band in the long term. At the link level, this thesis provides an insightful context analysis that is used, afterwards, to drive the design of a lightweight protocol that reliably serves broadcast traffic with substantial latency improvements over state-of-the-art NoCs. At the network level, our hybrid vision is evaluated putting emphasis on the flexibility provided at the network interface level, showing outstanding speedups for a wide set of traffic patterns. At the architecture level, the potential impact of the BoWNoC paradigm on the design of manycore chips is not only qualitatively discussed in general, but also quantitatively assessed in a particular architecture for fast synchronization.     Routing and Wavelength Assignment for Multicast Communication in Optical Network-on-Chip

    An Optical Network-on-Chip (ONoC) is an emerging chip-level optical interconnection technology to realise high-performance and power-efficient inter-core communication for many-core processors. Within the field, multicast communication is one of the most important inter-core communication forms. It is not only widely used in parallel computing applications in Chip Multi-Processors (CMPs), but also common in emerging areas such as neuromorphic computing. While many studies have been conducted on designing ONoC architectures and routing schemes to support multicast communication, most existing solutions adopt the methods that were initially proposed for electrical interconnects. These solutions can neither fully take advantage of optical communication nor address the special requirements of an ONoC. Moreover, most of them focus only on the optimisation of one multicast, which limits the practical applications because real systems often have to handle multiple multicasts requested from various applications. Hence, this thesis will address the design of a high-performance communication scheme for multiple multicasts by taking into account the unique characteristics and constraints of an ONoC. This thesis studies the problem from a network-level perspective. The design methodology is to optimally route all multicasts requested simultaneously from the applications in an ONoC, with the objective of efficiently utilising available wavelengths. The novelty is to adopt multicast-splitting strategies, where a multicast can be split into several sub-multicasts according to the distribution of multicast nodes, in order to reduce the conflicts of different multicasts. As routing and wavelength assignment problem is an NP-hard problem, heuristic approaches that use the multicast-splitting strategy are proposed in this thesis. Specifically, three routing and wavelength assignment schemes for multiple multicasts in an ONoC are proposed for different problem domains. Firstly, PRWAMM, a Path-based Routing and Wavelength Assignment for Multiple Multicasts in an ONoC, is proposed. Due to the low manufacture complexity requirement of an ONoC, e.g., no splitters, path-based routing is studied in PRWAMM. Two wavelength-assignment strategies for multiple multicasts under path-based routing are proposed. One is an intramulticast wavelength assignment, which assigns wavelength(s) for one multicast. The other is an inter-multicast wavelength assignment, which assigns wavelength(s) for different multicasts, according to the distributions of multicasts. Simulation results show that PRWAMM can reduce the average number of wavelengths by 15% compared to other path-based schemes. Secondly, RWADMM, a Routing and Wavelength Assignment scheme for Distribution-based Multiple Multicasts in a 2D ONoC, is proposed. Because path-based routing lacks flexibility, it cannot reduce the link conflicts effectively. Hence, RWADMM is designed, based on the distribution of different multicasts, which includes two algorithms. One is an optimal routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for special distributions of multicast nodes. The other is a heuristic routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for random distributions of multicast nodes. Simulation results show that RWADMM can reduce the number of wavelengths by 21.85% on average, compared to the state-of-the-art solutions in a 2D ONoC. Thirdly, CRRWAMM, a Cluster-based Routing and Reusable Wavelength Assignment scheme for Multiple Multicasts in a 3D ONoC, is proposed. Because of the different architectures with a 2D ONoC (e.g., the layout of nodes, optical routers), the methods designed for a 2D ONoC cannot be simply extended to a 3D ONoC. In CRRWAMM, the distribution of multicast nodes in a mesh-based 3D ONoC is analysed first. Then, routing theorems for special instances are derived. Based on the theorems, a general routing scheme, which includes a cluster-based routing method and a reusable wavelength assignment method, is proposed. Simulation results show that CRRWAMM can reduce the number of wavelengths by 33.2% on average, compared to other schemes in a 3D ONoC. Overall, the three routing and wavelength assignment schemes can achieve high-performance multicast communication for multiple multicasts of their problem domains in an ONoC. They all have the advantages of a low routing complexity, a low wavelength requirement, and good scalability, compared to their counterparts, respectively. These methods make an ONoC a flexible high-performance computing platform to execute various parallel applications with different multicast requirements. As future work, I will investigate the power consumption of various routing schemes for multicasts. Using a multicast-splitting strategy may increase power consumption since it needs different wavelengths to send packets to different destinations for one multicast, though the reduction of wavelengths used in the schemes can also potentially decrease overall power consumption. Therefore, how to achieve the best trade-off between the total number of wavelengths used and the number of sub-multicasts in order to reduce power consumption will be interesting future research

    Design and implementation of a modular controller for robotic machines

    This research focused on the design and implementation of an Intelligent Modular Controller (IMC) architecture designed to be reconfigurable over a robust network. The design incorporates novel communication, hardware, and software architectures. This was motivated by current industrial needs for distributed control systems due to growing demand for less complexity, more processing power, flexibility, and greater fault tolerance. To this end, three main contributions were made. Most distributed control architectures depend on multi-tier heterogeneous communication networks requiring linking devices and/or complex middleware. In this study, first, a communication architecture was proposed and implemented with a homogenous network employing the ubiquitous Ethernet for both real-time and non real-time communication. This was achieved by a producer-consumer coordination model for real-time data communication over a segmented network, and a client-server model for point-to-point transactions. The protocols deployed use a Time-Triggered (TT) approach to schedule real-time tasks on the network. Unlike other TT approaches, the scheduling mechanism does not need to be configured explicitly when controller nodes are added or removed. An implicit clock synchronization technique was also developed to complement the architecture. Second, a reconfigurable mechanism based on an auto-configuration protocol was developed. Modules on the network use this protocol to automatically detect themselves, establish communication, and negotiate for a desired configuration. Third, the research demonstrated hardware/software co-design as a contribution to the growing discipline of mechatronics. The IMC consists of a motion controller board designed and prototyped in-house, and a Java microcontroller. An IMC is mapped to each machine/robot axis, and an additional IMC can be configured to serve as a real-time coordinator. The entire architecture was implemented in Java, thus reinforcing uniformity, simplicity, modularity, and openness.
