Power disturbance monitoring through techniques for novelty detection on wind power and photovoltaic generation

    Get PDF
Novelty detection is a statistical method that verifies new or unknown data, determines whether these data are inliers (within the norm) or outliers (outside the norm), and can be used, for example, in developing classification strategies in machine learning systems for industrial applications. To this end, two types of energy that have evolved over time are solar photovoltaic and wind power generation. Some organizations around the world have developed energy quality standards to avoid known electric disturbances; however, their detection is still a challenge. In this work, several techniques for novelty detection are implemented to detect different electric anomalies (disturbances), which are k-nearest neighbors, Gaussian mixture models, one-class support vector machines, self-organizing maps, stacked autoencoders, and isolation forests. These techniques are applied to signals from real power quality environments of renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic and wind power generation. The power disturbances that will be analyzed are considered in the standard IEEE-1159, such as sag, oscillatory transient, flicker, and a condition outside the standard attributed to meteorological conditions. The contribution of the work consists of the development of a methodology based on six techniques for novelty detection of power disturbances, under known and unknown conditions, over real signals in the power quality assessment. The merit of the methodology is a set of techniques that allow to obtain the best performance of each one under different conditions, which constitutes an important contribution to the renewable energy systems.Postprint (published version

Electrical power system is a large and complex network, where power quality disturbances (PQDs) must be monitored, analyzed and mitigated continuously in order to preserve and to re-establish the normal power supply without even slight interruption. Practically huge disturbance data is difficult to manage and requires the higher level of accuracy and time for the analysis and monitoring. Thus automatic and intelligent algorithm based methodologies are in practice for the detection, recognition and classification of power quality events. This approach may help to take preventive measures against abnormal operations and moreover, sudden fluctuations in supply can be handled accordingly. Disturbance types, causes, proper and appropriate extraction of features in single and multiple disturbances, classification model type and classifier performance, are still the main concerns and challenges. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present a different approach for recognition of PQDs with the synthetic model based generated disturbances, which are frequent in power system operations, and the proposed unique feature vector. Disturbances are generated in Matlab workspace environment whereas distinctive features of events are extracted through discrete wavelet transform (DWT) technique. Machine learning based Support vector machine classifier tool is implemented for the classification and recognition of disturbances. In relation to the results, the proposed methodology recognizes the PQDs with high accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. This study illustrates that the proposed approach is valid, efficient and applicable

A Review on the Classification of Partial Discharges in Medium-Voltage Cables : Detection, Feature Extraction, Artificial Intelligence-Based Classification, and Optimization Techniques

    Get PDF
Medium-voltage (MV) cables often experience a shortened lifespan attributed to insulation breakdown resulting from accelerated aging and anomalous operational and environmental stresses. While partial discharge (PD) measurements serve as valuable tools for assessing the insulation state, complexity arises from the presence of diverse discharge sources, making the evaluation of PD data challenging. The reliability of diagnostics for MV cables hinges on the precise interpretation of PD activity. To streamline the repair and maintenance of cables, it becomes crucial to discern and categorize PD types accurately. This paper presents a comprehensive review encompassing the realms of detection, feature extraction, artificial intelligence, and optimization techniques employed in the classification of PD signals/sources. Its exploration encompasses a variety of sensors utilized for PD detection, data processing methodologies for efficient feature extraction, optimization techniques dedicated to selecting optimal features, and artificial intelligence-based approaches for the classification of PD sources. This synthesized review not only serves as a valuable reference for researchers engaged in the application of methods for PD signal classification but also sheds light on potential avenues for future developments of techniques within the context of MV cables.© 2024 by the authors. Advances in power quality analysis techniques for electrical machines and drives: a review

    Get PDF
The electric machines are the elements most used at an industry level, and they represent the major power consumption of the productive processes. Particularly speaking, among all electric machines, the motors and their drives play a key role since they literally allow the motion interchange in the industrial processes; it could be said that they are the medullar column for moving the rest of the mechanical parts. Hence, their proper operation must be guaranteed in order to raise, as much as possible, their efficiency, and, as consequence, bring out the economic benefits. This review presents a general overview of the reported works that address the efficiency topic in motors and drives and in the power quality of the electric grid. This study speaks about the relationship existing between the motors and drives that induces electric disturbances into the grid, affecting its power quality, and also how these power disturbances present in the electrical network adversely affect, in turn, the motors and drives. In addition, the reported techniques that tackle the detection, classification, and mitigations of power quality disturbances are discussed. Additionally, several works are reviewed in order to present the panorama that show the evolution and advances in the techniques and tendencies in both senses: motors and drives affecting the power source quality and the power quality disturbances affecting the efficiency of motors and drives. A discussion of trends in techniques and future work about power quality analysis from the motors and drives efficiency viewpoint is provided. Finally, some prompts are made about alternative methods that could help in overcome the gaps until now detected in the reported approaches referring to the detection, classification and mitigation of power disturbances with views toward the improvement of the efficiency of motors and drives.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

An Unobtrusive and Lightweight Ear-worn System for Continuous Epileptic Seizure Detection

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases globally, affecting around 50 million people worldwide. Fortunately, up to 70 percent of people with epilepsy could live seizure-free if properly diagnosed and treated, and a reliable technique to monitor the onset of seizures could improve the quality of life of patients who are constantly facing the fear of random seizure attacks. The scalp-based EEG test, despite being the gold standard for diagnosing epilepsy, is costly, necessitates hospitalization, demands skilled professionals for operation, and is discomforting for users. In this paper, we propose EarSD, a novel lightweight, unobtrusive, and socially acceptable ear-worn system to detect epileptic seizure onsets by measuring the physiological signals from behind the user's ears. EarSD includes an integrated custom-built sensing, computing, and communication PCB to collect and amplify the signals of interest, remove the noises caused by motion artifacts and environmental impacts, and stream the data wirelessly to the computer or mobile phone nearby, where data are uploaded to the host computer for further processing. We conducted both in-lab and in-hospital experiments with epileptic seizure patients who were hospitalized for seizure studies. The preliminary results confirm that EarSD can detect seizures with up to 95.3 percent accuracy by just using classical machine learning algorithms

Early and reliable prediction of user’s intention to change locomotion mode or speed is critical for a smooth and natural lower limb prosthesis. Meanwhile, incorporation of explicit environmental feedback can facilitate context aware intelligent prosthesis which allows seamless operation in a variety of gait demands. This dissertation introduces environmental awareness through computer vision and enables early and accurate prediction of intention to start, stop or change speeds while walking. Electromyography (EMG), Electroencephalography (EEG), Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and Ground Reaction Force (GRF) sensors were used to predict intention to start, stop or increase walking speed. Furthermore, it was investigated whether external emotional music stimuli could enhance the predictive capability of intention prediction methodologies. Application of advanced machine learning and signal processing techniques on pre-movement EEG resulted in an intention prediction system with low latency, high sensitivity and low false positive detection. Affective analysis of EEG suggested that happy music stimuli significantly (

Sleep apnea syndrome is a common sleep disorder. Detection of apnea and differentiation of its type: obstructive (OSA), central (CSA) or mixed is important in the context of treatment methods, however, it typically requires a great deal of technical and human resources. The aim of this research was to propose a quasi-optimal procedure for processing single-channel electroencephalograms (EEG) from overnight recordings, maximizing the accuracy of automatic apnea or hypopnea detection, as well as distinguishing between the OSA and CSA types. The proposed methodology consisted in processing the EEG signals divided into epochs, with the selection of the best methods at the stages of preprocessing, extraction and selection of features, and classification. Normal breathing was unmistakably distinguished from apnea by the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) and an artificial neural network (ANN), and with 99.98% accuracy by the support vector machine (SVM). The average accuracy of multinomial classification was: 82.29%, 83.26%, and 82.25% for the kNN, SVM and ANN, respectively. The sensitivity and precision of OSA and CSA detection ranged from 55 to 66%, and the misclassification cases concerned only the apnea type
