    Collaborative eResearch in a Social Cloud

    Abstract—Social networks provide a useful basis for enabling collaboration among groups of individuals. This is applicable not only to social communities but also to the scientific community. Already scientists are leveraging social networking concepts in projects to form groups, share information and communicate with their peers. For scientific projects which require large computing resources, one useful aspect of collaboration is the sharing of computing resources among project members. A social network provides an ideal platform to share these resources. This paper introduces a framework for Social Cloud computing with a view towards collaboration and resource sharing within a scientific community. The architecture of a Social Cloud, where individ-uals or institutions contribute the capacity of their computing resources by means of Virtual Machines leased through the social network, is outlined. Members of the Social Cloud can contribute, request, and use Virtual Machines from other members, as well as form Virtual Organizations among groups of members

    Status report on the NCRIS eResearch capability summary

    Preface The period 2006 to 2014 has seen an approach to the national support of eResearch infrastructure by the Australian Government which is unprecedented. Not only has investment been at a significantly greater scale than previously, but the intent and approach has been highly innovative, shaped by a strategic approach to research support in which the critical element, the catchword, has been collaboration. The innovative directions shaped by this strategy, under the banner of the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), have led to significant and creative initiatives and activity, seminal to new research and fields of discovery. Origin This document is a Technical Report on the Status of the NCRIS eResearch Capability. It was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training in the second half of 2014 to examine a range of questions and issues concerning the development of this infrastructure over the period 2006-2014. The infrastructure has been built and implemented over this period following investments made by the Australian Government amounting to over $430 million, under a number of funding initiatives

    2011 Strategic roadmap for Australian research infrastructure

    The 2011 Roadmap articulates the priority research infrastructure areas of a national scale (capability areas) to further develop Australia’s research capacity and improve innovation and research outcomes over the next five to ten years. The capability areas have been identified through considered analysis of input provided by stakeholders, in conjunction with specialist advice from Expert Working Groups   It is intended the Strategic Framework will provide a high-level policy framework, which will include principles to guide the development of policy advice and the design of programs related to the funding of research infrastructure by the Australian Government. Roadmapping has been identified in the Strategic Framework Discussion Paper as the most appropriate prioritisation mechanism for national, collaborative research infrastructure. The strategic identification of Capability areas through a consultative roadmapping process was also validated in the report of the 2010 NCRIS Evaluation. The 2011 Roadmap is primarily concerned with medium to large-scale research infrastructure. However, any landmark infrastructure (typically involving an investment in excess of $100 million over five years from the Australian Government) requirements identified in this process will be noted. NRIC has also developed a ‘Process to identify and prioritise Australian Government landmark research infrastructure investments’ which is currently under consideration by the government as part of broader deliberations relating to research infrastructure. NRIC will have strategic oversight of the development of the 2011 Roadmap as part of its overall policy view of research infrastructure

    The value of research data to the nation

    Executive Director’s report Ross Wilkinson, ANDS How can Australia address the challenge of living in bushfire prone city fringes? How can Australia most effectively farm and preserve our precious soil? How can Australia understand the Great Barrier Reef? No single discipline can answer these questions, but to address these challenges data is needed from a range of sources and disciplines. Research data that is well organised and available allows research to make substantial contributions vital to Australia’s future. For example, by drawing upon data that is able to be used by soil scientists, geneticists, plant scientists, climate analysts, and others, it is possible to conduct the multidisciplinary investigations necessary to tackle truly difficult and important challenges. The data might be provided by a Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Network OzFluz tower, insect observations recorded by a citizen through the Atlas of Living Australia, genetic sequencing of insects through a Bioplatforms Australia facility, weather observations by the Bureau of Meteorology, or historical data generated by CSIRO over many decades. Each will provide a part of the jigsaw, but the pieces must be able to be put together. This requires careful collection and organisation, which together deliver enormous value to the country. However, nationally significant problems are often tackled by international cooperation, so Australia’s data assets enable Australian researchers to work with the best in the world, solving problems of both national and international significance. Australia’s data assets and research data infrastructure provide Australian researchers with an excellent platform for international collaboration. Australia has world-leading research data infrastructure: our ability to store, compute, discover, explore, analyse and publish is the best in the world. The ability to capture data through a wide range of capabilities, from the Australian Synchrotron to Integrated Marine Observation System [IMOS: imos.org.au] ocean gliders, the combination of national storage and computation through RDSI, NCI and Pawsey initiatives, the ability to publish and discover data through ANDS, the ability to analyse and explore data through Nectar, and state and local eResearch capabilities, highlights just some of the capabilities that Australian researchers are able to access. Importantly, their international partners are able to work with them using many of these resources. As well, Australian research organisations are assembling many resources to support their research. These include policies, procedures, practical infrastructure, and very importantly – people! The eResearch team and the data librarians are always keen to help. This issue of Share highlights how the data resources of Australia are providing a very substantial national benefit, and how that benefit is being realised

    Throughout the year, the DCC stages regional data management roadshows to present best practice and showcase new tools and resources. This article reports on the second roadshow, organised in conjunction with the White Rose University Consortium and held on 1-3 March 2011 at the University of Sheffield. The goal for Day 1 was to describe the emerging trends and challenges associated with research data management and their potential impact on higher education institutions, and to introduce the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) and its role in supporting research data management. This was achieved through a substantial morning presentation followed by an afternoon of illustrative case studies at both disciplinary and institutional levels, highlighting different models, approaches and working practice. Day 2 was aimed at those in senior management roles and looked at strategic and policy implementation objectives. The Day 3 workshop explored data management requirements from the perspective of the institution and the main UK funding bodies, the different roles and responsibilities involved in effective data management and provided an introduction to data management planning. The portfolio of DCC resources, tools and services was explored in greater detail. The roadshow provided delegates with advice and guidance to support institutional Research Data Management and has helped to facilitate regional networking and the exchange of skills and experience

    Design Creativity: Future Directions for Integrated Visualisation

    The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sectors are facing unprecedented challenges, not just with increased complexity of projects per se, but design-related integration. This requires stakeholders to radically re-think their existing business models (and thinking that underpins them), but also the technological challenges and skills required to deliver these projects. Whilst opponents will no doubt cite that this is nothing new as the sector as a whole has always had to respond to change; the counter to this is that design ‘creativity’ is now much more dependent on integration from day one. Given this, collaborative processes embedded in Building Information Modelling (BIM) models have been proffered as a panacea solution to embrace this change and deliver streamlined integration. The veracity of design teams’ “project data” is increasingly becoming paramount - not only for the coordination of design, processes, engineering services, fabrication, construction, and maintenance; but more importantly, facilitate ‘true’ project integration and interchange – the actualisation of which will require firm consensus and commitment. This Special Issue envisions some of these issues, challenges and opportunities (from a future landscape perspective), by highlighting a raft of concomitant factors, which include: technological challenges, design visualisation and integration, future digital tools, new and anticipated operating environments, and training requirements needed to deliver these aspirations. A fundamental part of this Special Issue’s ‘call’ was to capture best practice in order to demonstrate how design, visualisation and delivery processes (and technologies) affect the finished product viz: design outcome, design procedures, production methodologies and construction implementation. In this respect, the use of virtual environments are now particularly effective at supporting the design and delivery processes. In summary therefore, this Special Issue presents nine papers from leading scholars, industry and contemporaries. These papers provide an eclectic (but cognate) representation of AEC design visualisation and integration; which not only uncovers new insight and understanding of these challenges and solutions, but also provides new theoretical and practice signposts for future research

    Postgraduate Students\u27 Perception Towards the Use of ICT in Research in Ghanaian Public Universities

    The use of ICT in research has become significant among postgraduate students. However, available literature shows that there is little research on the perception and adoption of this technology in developing countries. This problem has created gap in the existing literature. This, therefore, make it necessary to find out more about the perceptions of postgraduate students on the use of ICT in research. The paper intents to discuss these. The paper adopted the survey methodology by using the stratified and convenience sampling techniques to select 346 postgraduate students from University of Ghana and University of Cape Coast to participate in the study. Incorporating the Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM3), this study revealed the following: Most postgraduate students perceive the use of ICT applications in research as very important. Again, majority of them intimated that ICT facilities that their institutions provided met their research needs. The findings further indicated that students accessed ICT applications for quick access to information, convenience of access to information, time saving, and currency of information accessed. This paper strongly recommends that public universities in Ghana should maintain the already existing ICT facilities. However, they should ensure that all ICT facilities are monitored and maintained
